Intel 82574L Gigabit Ethernet controller

Tue Sep 22, 2009 1:09 pm

Intel 82574L Gigabit Ethernet controller

Is this supported, or going to be supported?
It's becoming quite a popular Lan-on-Motherboard for some embedded solutions now.
ports don't show up in 3.30 or 4.0 beta 4.

Intel 82574L still not working in 4.3 it seems.
Not sure what's up here

[edit] under system>respources, PCI tab, all interfaces showing as "unknown device"

I'll send a supout.rif to tech support

I have contacted technical support , several times concerning Intel 82574L Gigabit Ethernet controller, actually from May 2009, The replies i got so far were: " we will support it soon in the next release.." , well i am a loyal customer of Mikrotik products buying several licenses,i feel a little bit uncomfortable with this kind of support, From May 2009 i have an atom based motherboard which i cant use it with Mikrotik. Is it so difficult to add to linux kernel 2.6.24, support for Intel 82574L Gigabit Ethernet controller ?.The driver exists , it just of a matter of integration.

Probably I have no obsession with the above driver, many except me , have boards with this Ethernet controller.

I don't want to flame nobody, BUT, at least clarify if you intend to add support for this controller

I hope someone from technical support will listen to me seriously and do something about it

Normis said, that new kernel will be used only in v5... new kernel = new drivers :(

You're not alone. I feel the same way about Mikrotik support. Quite honestly, I'm getting tired of "waiting for next release". I too spent 17 emails (stating exactly what my issue was in each email), just to find out they admitted a problem and said "will fix in next release". Come to find out, it took 3+ releases to fix it. I wish Mikrotik would please please please put some quality assurance into their software (just test it at least)!

We always test what we fix or make. Sometimes your configuration is different, or you have some specific setup, which makes it not work completely. We test as well as we can, and sometimes we give customers a pre-release build so they can test if it works now.

I've asked for a "pre-release" a couple of times, as I would like to figure out bugs, and stable-ize things. I am willing to test a "pre-release", but I've never been granted access to one, though I've asked.

Mikrotik, it's a known fact that things break almost every couple releases. I'm just asking that some "more" QA go into a release. I'm saying this out of experience (started in v2.9.(43 ?), to v4.1.

v2.x and early v3.x seemed to have good stability for me.

I just can't upgrade anymore without something breaking. I understand config, but still, as a user, something broke, and I have to go in and troubleshoot to fix the problem, which means network downtime.

Anyway, keep working on it. Btw, any chance of v5 beta release? Maybe put Lua back in v5 so I can learn the scripting language? It sounds like Mikrotik scripting will have so much more power with Lua.

Any chance this controller will be supported soon in RouterOS?

If not or if you guys say it's planned for the version 5.0, it's ok. Just tell us, we're planning to invest on some industrial motherboard and we need this information to decide.

Hi Normis, your answer is pretty clear but again i've to ask one more time since we're really on the edge for this. We're working on a project which is built on RouterOS (+ a specific KVM virtual machine) and our vendor of network appliances manufacture devices based on 82574L. We do tests with linux kvm + routeros inside it and have really good results about the appliances. But this is not the way we prefer to go. We need RouterOS as the base of our project.

So even saying end of the first quarter or end of april as a release date will be a good news for our project.

Any possibilities on that?

Thanks
Gokalp

Yes, I can confirm this card works under both 5.0beta1 and 5.0beta2.
[admin@Testbox] /system resource pci> print
 # DEVICE VENDOR NAME IRQ
 1 05:00.0 Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network Connection (rev: 0) 11
 2 04:00.0 Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network Connection (rev: 0) 10
Would you like me to send through a supout with my current configuration showing it?

omega-00,
One user reported that card does not work with 4.9/5.0beta2.
Perhaps he have different revision card.
Thank you for the feedback.

5.02 beta was smooth for me on all makes, including integration with my custom dvd burning interface. Not once did it interfere with my business continuity and high availability features of my business. This is the type of upgrade that truly makes a difference. thanks for putting in the hard work guys.

Hi, we are working with this this controllers and we are experiencing a limited L2MTU.

Deploying those on a MPLS-VPLS environment, MPLS-MTU has to be reduced to 1500 when traffic is crossing this chipsets (otherwise it can be set to 1522 without problems).
TCP MSS on standard IP traffic through this MPLS network has to be reduced to 1440 if crossing the 82574Ls.

L2mtu is not detected.

Is this a problem of the driver? How could it be solved?

In this cause i owuld like to increse MTU of the interface to desidered L2MTU.

The only porblme is when you mix x86+rb in this case you have to increse the MTU also of the interface of the RB, becuase in other way you will have ospf-mtu problem.
