in short - internal /ppp secrets database is optimised for ~100 users, some users report that even 200 users runs fine.

external auth - can be user-managet package installed on the same router, and authentication set up against user-manager. then you can have as much as bandwidth and router can hold. Please note that this is highly volatile value as that depends on configuration and how optimised it is. (meaning - firewall/bandwidth limitation, pptp/pppoe tunnels)

and you can expect RB1000 to handle user count in thousands.

Would really depend on other factors, bandwidth, rules etc. If you need more power though, I would not see a reason why not. I don't know if the software had ever been tested for that. http://www.mikrotikrouter.com has the 2282, these are dual quad core xeons. Normally though, I would break up the hotspot a bit more for "reliability". 10,000 users going tohugh one box, might not be the best thing, but hey..

Sorry, they run around 200-300 meg of data, so around 20% or so.

They avg between 1000-3000, it goes up and down as its a univerisity, a number of subnets too. The built in system can handle thousands of users, just not well. Its optimized for a VERY few units, 100 or so MAX, we had about 5000 users in it at one time, but even one high end hardware you are talking 10-20 seconds for a login ! DOE, same hardware put user manager on it, instant!
