RouterOS License and v4 questions

Wed Oct 21, 2009 1:12 pm

If you currently are running any RouterOS v3.X version, no matter what it says in the License window, you can upgrade to v4. We are offering free upgrades for everyone!

If you are running 2.8, 2.9 or any other version, you should first upgrade to v3.

It's also highly recommended to update the license with the "Update License" button while still on version 3.25 or newer, because in v4 your router will stop working in 72 hours if the license is not updated.

The license update is free, and only requires an internet connection from the PC where your Winbox is running.

If you have Any License and Upgrade questions, please ask them here.

only if you plan to upgrade to v4 =)

p.s. you can upgrade the license only on 3.25. 3.22 doesn't support that

yes, if you click "update key" in winbox, it will give you free "upgradable to v4.x" and then FTP upgrade will work

that is an amazing news! :D

so, i'm gonna have v4.x mikrotik, without losing any feature that i already have on v3.x?
i doubted it, because i bought mikrotik when it was still v2.x and the license says, i can only upgrade 1 time major update, which is v2.x into v3.x

This is a community support forum, and not the official support channel from the vendor itself. If you want Mikrotik to answer, email them.

The previous Software ID reverted back in the old system. I wonder if the same thing will happen if I use a Compact Flash to S-ATA adapter?

your license will be in new format, the old RouterOS version will not understand it. you will have to find the old key and re-apply it.

Re: RouterOS License and v4 questions

Hark /b/rothers and hear my tale of woe.....

I just had two very unfortunate experiences when upgrading a four-proc server and a two-proc PC from ROS 3.30 to ROS 4.2.

I followed the steps outlined on the download page, i.e., upgraded the license file, etc.

1. The server. After reboot, three Intel Pro/1000 PCI cards would not longer function as they no longer had drivers! The two onboard Realtek ethernet ports worked fine. I had to downgrade back to 3.30 and everything returned to normal, except that the hotspot put another set of files on top of the ones that were in use and that had to be cleaned up. A supout.rif was emailed to Mikrotik.

2. The PC. In a moment of mental retardation, I upgraded this over the link as it is only 1km away, but lies through Taliban territory. On reboot, the PC never came back to life. Sighing mightily, I strapped on my 9mm and body armor and drove the 1km from Kandahar Airfield to FOB Lindsey. Thankfully, I had the presence of mind to take a monitor and keyboard with me, because when I got there, both the onboard and two PCI Realtek 8139 ethernet ports had become autistic and no longer spoke to the outside world. An Ouija board was not at hand, and I could not login via WinBox to drop the downgrade files, so I wound up having to use NetInstall and start from scratch. Thankfully, I had the forethought to make a configuration backup. Again the buggardly thing had no drivers.

Routerboard RB433, RB450G and RB600A boards had no problems with the upgrade except they would not act as NTP clients to the NTP server. Initially when all were at ROS 3.30 the server was set at manycast and each routerboard was set to unicast and all was well in dogpatch. Now they will not connect to the ROS 3.30 server to get NTP. I have not set the server to broadcast yet, but I would rather not if this can be resolved.

I have submitted this to Mikrotik, but I'm hoping that someone else has seen this issue and perhaps found a workaround for it. if nothing else, heed my warning and wait a little before upgrading. It strikes me that there may be a serious issue with the driver package in ROS 4.2.

Been a horrible day and I sure wish I could lay my hands on a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue!

Re: RouterOS License and v4 questions

I've had a funny on a RB333, upgraded 6 days ago or so the version to 4.2 from 3.30 after updating the key obviously.

All was fine for 5 days, then suddenly the board went down, in that I couldn't access it from the ethernet any longer.

Upon rebooting it and accessing it via Winbox, it says its not licensed. True is bob it no longer has the license on it, and has reverted to a level 0 license.

I've logged a support issue via the support email address, but unfortunately they haven't responded within a 24 hour period, so now the board has shutdown again.

Any ideas on what I should do to get it back up again?

The topic is v4 questions, so I will post it here:

1 - What kernel version number is RouterOS 4.2 using? A simple 2.6.31 like answer would suffice. Also, what is 3.30 using?

2 - What specific Intel NIC driver packages & version is in 4.2? http://sourceforge.net/projects/e1000/files/ ? e1000e-1.0.15.tar.gz ? e1000 and e1000e? Would just like to know whats in there and at what version. This will allow us to cobble together a list of supported intel NIC numbers for compatibility.

Thx,
Sam

Since current OS is 4.x you are entintled to free 5.x and 6.x upgrades.

Quote from wiki:(http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/All_about_licenses)
The difference between these is that L3 and L4 only allow RouterOS upgrades until the last update of the next version. L5 and L6 however, give you the ability to use one more major version

I think you are mixing up Version and Level. He wants a LEVEL 6, not VERSION 6. That is not free as you seem to be indicating that it is.

Also, since it came with Version 3, it would be eligible to go up to Version 5 for free, NOT Version 6, if I understand correctly.

i just purchased Level 4 and custom frequency license while the Mikrotik OS installed was v3.19 on RB/411 and works fine, but when i want to upgrade it to 3.28 or 3.30 or 4.2 it says:

Your router does not have any valid key.
Please, get valid key from http://www.mikrotik.com
and enter it at "System | License".
If you already have paid for this license, please,
press "Update Key" in "License Window"
Router will stop functioning after 23h and 50m if no valid key is entered.
Current installation "software ID": 9PXK-8Y2S

may you help me how to upgrade it to v4.2 with the license level 4 that i just purchased .

PS: Yes, I update the ROS to 4.2 and don't upgrade license first! my mistake! I send email to support@mikrotik.com and waiting for answer.

Hello, i'm new in routeros.
Just bought 450G router with 3.25 version.
Performed update procedure to v 4.2 depending on http://www.mikrotik.com/download.html instructions.
Looks like i make some mistake, because after reboot in winbox under Licencse after i press update License key i got "failed: invalid old software Id". I have software id in XXXX-XXXX format, also upgradable to v5.x
Please, help, why i got Invalid old software Id??? Maybe i need to downgrade?
Thanks a lot in advance!

( This has nothing to do with anything, but thought I would point it out.)

Re: RouterOS License and v4 questions

Fri Dec 04, 2009 3:41 am

Greetings! I have the MikroTik Routerboard RB 333. It was running on Mikrotik OS v4.0.
When I decided to upgrade it to newest version OS 4.3, after reboot I read the following:

ROUTER HAS NO SOFTWARE KEY
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Your router does not have any valid key.
Please, get valid key from http://www.mikrotik.com
and enter it at "System | License".

If you already have paid for this license, please,
press "Update Key" in "License Window"

Router will stop functioning after 23h and 30m if no valid key is entered.

Current installation "software ID": M9IQ-WHQ3
-------------------------------------------------------------------
After I tried to get new licence key/upgrade, I read the following:
failed:invalid old software ID
On two other routerboards (RB 433) everything works just fine on version 4.3.

And now I can't even do the ROLLBACK or DOWNGRADE to v 4.0 or 3.xx. Formatting NAND can't help me eather.

I 've wrote a letter to support service, waiting for reply...
So what should I do with that ?
Thank you...

it's strange - v4 should not work with old key... have you tried to look for your key in https://www.mikrotik.com/client/index.php ?

huh...
Formatting NAND can't help me eather.
I hope, you haven't formatted your NAND - it will erase your license, afair...

Strange, but I was formatting NAND when it was v3.13 or v3.25, and it was working perfect.
Routerboard generates the key and starting up with licence key.
And now when I upgraded to v4.3 the NAND format will erase the the key, that was in router chip from the beginning?
Is that right?

Please, i am in that dilemma now and the routerboard cut with this is my backhaul connecting 4 other 5 km and 10km base stations, i was upgrading from 4.2 to 4.3. Is there a way around this problem by 4.3 i dotn mind buying a new license key in the mean time as it would be a disaster if this board gets reset after 24hours.

that guy registered minutes ago with a random number sequence email @hotmail and didn't ask anything, just quoted your text. this is a typical spam scenario. they make an empty message, if the moderator clears them, they edit the message to post spam later. believe me, I manage a 20'000 user forum ;)

Has anyone happen to update a PR732 to v4.4 yet? I'd like to get ours updated (still running 3.28) But I'd like to make sure that there aren't any problems since it's our Core Router.

Any feedback would be great

Cheers

Hi, has anyone tried version 4.4 with nstreme (exact size and framer limit 3200) It seems to be broken. The wireless link becomes unstable and keeps disconnecting until the test is over. Also data transfer rates are a crawling 5Kb/s. Any work around if noticed?

Also, some important functions are missing in dude if installed on 4.3 and above i had to add them myself to get snmp working properly on dude.

I seem to have got caught in this licening loop as well.
I have over 50 MT Access points.
I have been slowly upgrading them to 4.3-4.4 up to now it has been problem free.
This morning I was doing my rounds and found that an rb433ah is giving me 3.5 hours to fix the licence.
I'm getting the
*******************************************************
"ROUTER HAS NO SOFTWARE KEY
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Your router does not have any valid key.
Please, get valid key from http://www.mikrotik.com
and enter it at "System | License".

If you already have paid for this license, please,
press "Update Key" in "License Window"

Router will stop functioning after 3h and 50m if no valid key is entered."
***********************************************************
and then failed" Invalid old software ID!
***********************************************************
I had moved it from 3.28 to 4.4
Strange thing is I upgraded it last night only about 16 hours ago.
I did upgrade the firmware first, I forgot to upgrade the licence right away but I only worked on doing upgrades once in the week that was last night.
I doubt I will get this resolved with mikrotik support in the short time I have left.
So I'm going to buy a new licence to keep this critical hardware up.(I don't even know if this will work)
I must admit it makes me very nervous about upgrading furthur.
So I must report that it appears there is still some problems with 4.4 licensing .

Update:
I purchased a licence to keep the AP up.
It worked instantly.
$95 to fix this because it was a level 5 Licence
I asked support for a credit .
It's new years Day I really don't expect them to fix this till next week

Get a new license it will work. I think the license problem is either random or at least the reason isn't at our disposal yet.

Re: RouterOS License and v4 questions

Ok so this has now led to a worse case senario.
I updated the licence on the rb433ah after paying for the new licence online.
It showed me that it had updated instantly
I rebooted it. it showed that all licence details where correct and then it shut down at 2pm.
The clock on the system reset must have kept ticking (like a time bomb) without showing me there was any issue.
On reboot and login there was no warning screen.
So tomorrow I'm faced with a 65 foot climb on an icy silo to swap out this board to restore service for 50 customers
and a board that I'm going to have to relegate to a corner of my bench for a week before I trust it.
I consider this a very serious issue and therfore cannot understate a warning to all others don't upgrade to 4.x in a production enviroment.
New boards only and bench them for 72 hours before you trust them until MT gets this process out of beta.
I recommend that along with warnings on the correct process for upgradeing from 3.x to 4.x on the download page that it is made clear that there are problems with the process and not to proceed in a production enviroment.
Failure to do so borders on criminal negiligence.

Hi, really am not sure am clear are you saying the board went off at the expiry time? Did the settings get reset or did it just go off? When you turned it back on was everything back to normal?

Also, wow I know what you mean about your mast and clients you could loose all your hair for something like this. on the side, a little insight you see all you are talking about I mean the behaviour of 4.x is the reason its still in beta and its till supposed to be erratic and unstable. The best alarm that could be placed on it is "this is a BETA version. Still Unstable".

Yes the board went off at expiry.
The expiry that was not showing an expiry anymore after the license was confirmed to have been updated by the rb 433ah.
The board had been rebooted after the update.
It showed no warning screen for the license.
The license table showed a valid license was installed.
I checked by running "update Licence Key"
It returned with "failed: license key is up to date !

I lost connection with the board at the precise time that it should have shutdown because of the license expiring.
I'm leaving now with a new board to replace it.

Edit
Board was in shutdown state, on reboot it had retained its original settings so service was restored for customers on reboot. For right now have decided to leave it in production and see what it does.

hi,
first message and I want to wish you good year to all !!!

Assumption:
I have very little experience with these products, except for simple configurations...

Today I had the bright idea of putting a hand on routerboard (RB532A) I was given it long ago ...

Having had some stability issues, and I decided to do a complete reinstallation (downgrade) from v4.40 to 3.3 version.

I performed these steps via serial comunication:d
-Shutdown RB
-Reset configuration
-Nand erase
-Complete memory check
-Inserted 128Mb compact flash for future proxy cache
-Installing mips 3.30 via netinstall.

...and after being informed to execute the "update license key" whitin 24 hours, i have opened winbox on internet/RB connected pc and surprise after click on "update licence key" i receive message on the bottom of the form that say "failed. Invalid old software ID!"

But here i see 8 digit software-id, remembering that version 3.3 had 7 digits, I decided to reinstall via NetInstall Version 4.40... but again I get the message 24 hours to activate the license ... I tried again "Update license key" but unfortunately I always get the same message ... "failed. Invalid old software ID!"

First of all this I am sure that running 4.40 whith the licence "L4" was active whit 8 digits "Software ID" but I do not remember any way the software ID but I think it changed during the 2 reinstallation...

how can I do to regain the original license running on the old installation?

I would not like having to buy new licenses because I use routerboard only for educational purposes ... and i am not sure if the routerboard it's fully working.

I hope someone can really help me.

Greetings from 'Italy

Re: RouterOS License and v4 questions

I have just experienced a similar issue.

I have a RB450G, had 3.28; I upgraded the bootloader, then the firmware to 4.4; I logged in and was met with the upgrade key dialogue; I did what it asked for and received an appropriate key message; rebooted; and everything was fine. No further messages and the license then showed the 4x key and Level 5; and I just clicked on update license and received the Failed: Key already up to date! message.

At the 72nd hour the board shutdown; and I mean literally... my provider said they were in a down - down state and saw nothing from my equipment. The bad part about this is it is 4 hours away and over 250 miles (one way)...

After a sleepless night, I drove to the site this AM only to plug the console cable in and had NO log messages and the date/time had been reset to Jan 1, 1970... I powercycled the device and it all came back up and started passing traffic again.... all with a simple reboot. I just checked again and see NO evidence of the lockout timer counting down.. I have a solid backup of the device and a spare RB450G just in case....

FWIW... I reflashed the bootloader, and reinstalled the 4.4 ROS.... We will see what happens... I have opened a support case with Mikrotik and sent them the configs, keys and explaination; no response as of yet; but at this writting I am on EST and I think they are just getting to work... So I'm sure they will reply...

Nothing is 100% perfect 100% of the time. I guess my downfall here is I didn't have the foresite to let 72 hours pass on the bench before deploying out of test.....

Re: RouterOS License and v4 questions

just sharing some similar problems...

i Have a RB 1000u, upgraded from 4.2 to 4.3, license updated, but it gone crazy, license turns to level 0 and expiring in 23 hours. tried updating the key always failed, always reported invalid key.
Until the unit is hard rebooted (Only hard reboot!), will bring back the key to level 6, but doesn't last very long (within few hours), license went back to level 0 and expiring. This was occuring everyday.

Contacted support, replied with different license key, still the same, upgraded to 4.4 no improvement but unit become worst with hard booting only boots after 2-3 times trying.
tried netinstall the new 4.4 OS, nothing change.

Finally support sent me a new firmware, and couldn't applied to the unit as it went down completely..... and it doesn't seem to be software problem to me.

Give up now, the RB1000u going back for RMA..... :?

Re: RouterOS License and v4 questions

mikrotik support was really good and gave me a free new key to restore the license.

The problem is that now the Router is a lot of trouble to boot version 4.40 (start correctly 30% of the time.)... may need to update the firmware of routerboard 532A to solve this problem or the card is defective?

With version 3.3 I do not think there were such problems, but I'm afraid of losing again the license when downgrade.

any help?

Got a RB600 that tels me

ROUTER HAS NO SOFTWARE KEY
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Your router does not have any valid key.
Please, get valid key from www.mikrotik.com
and enter it at "System | License".

If you already have paid for this license, please,
press "Update Key" in "License Window"

Router will stop functioning after 22h and 10m if no valid key is entered.

Current installation "software ID": VMX9-N3CV

And if I try to update license key it tels me failed: Inalid old software key

Hi
I have taken over 30 AP's from wisp who went bust. They are running ros 3.6. I think one might be 3.25 i will check.
When i login with winbox and click license then it says i can upgrade to 4.x when i click update it says license invalid ?
Any ideas ? Is this the right way to upgrade the licenses and the software ?

Upgrading procedure for all devices:

1.Update the Bootloader if using a RouterBOARD
2.In your RouterOS v3.25 or newer, Update your RouterOS license
3.Upload new RouterOS v4 packages to the router, and reboot
If you are currently running an older version of RouterOS, where license can't be upgraded to the new format, you can still upgrade, but absolutely make sure that After successful upgrade click on the "Update License" button in Winbox and make sure the new license is accepted. You will have 72 hours to do this, but it's recommended to do this immediatelly

1. download v3.30 in that case

2. type command "/system routerboard upgrade"

that's all

Re: RouterOS License and v4 questions

Fri Apr 23, 2010 5:29 pm

Ty Carter
Hello Ty -

I had *exactly* the same thing happen to me, with an RB1000, going from 3.30 to 4.6. I'm in communication with Mikrotik about this now, and I'm in a unique position to try to duplicate it, as I am taking another RB1000 out of production this weekend, and can try the update again on the bench. If I get the same results, I am going to chase Mikrotik on this. Please tell me a couple things:

1. After the reboot that restored service, have you had any further trouble with that unit?

2. What exact order of steps did you perform in doing the update (I realize this may be hard to recall) - did you 1) update the bootloader, 2) update the firmware, 3) update the license? Or did you 1) update the bootloader, 2) update the license, then 3) update the firmware? I have a theory....

Hello,

My problem is that we are operating a RB411 in a shipyard, and one day in a lovely morning the router said I have to ! upgrade my license. The license was shipped with the device many years ago. The windows said I have 12 hrs to update my license, but after pressing the update button the "invalid request received!" message was said.

Nothing changed, nothing tampered, but maybe the router had problems of the power.

Please help me if its possible

My license number is CMB8-AW64

Thany you in advance
