PPPoE x86 hardware sugestions, experiences and tips&tricks

Fri Jan 08, 2010 2:47 pm

Hello,
I curently use PPPoE on x86 with Intel 865 chipset, Celeron 2800, 2 Lan cards Realtek 8139C (for WAN and LAN)and ROS 2.9.51. This config works perfect with no isues at all ! I have to replace it because the CPU is 100% with more than 400 users online. I use 2.9.51 because I am not sure if v3.x has problem solved with packet loss with PPPoE.
I tried with P43 chipset intel core2duo E6300, NIC - PCIe Yukon Marvell, PCI Realtek rtl8139C, 8139D, even with RB44 ... etc. all combinatios ...didn't make it work longer than 1 hour. NIC suddenly stops working or very slow connection or after about 5 MB traffic I need to reconnect to make it work again and so ...

I would apriciate any sugestion about tested hardware config for x86.

Thanx

Yes multi-core processors are supported with the latest versions of RouterOS.

Here is just one of my emails to mikrotik support .
Router crashes and reset many times. here is the supout . One time i
tried to see routers monitor and i have seen a quick paragraph which
shown a paragraph begins with Segfault .

Please inform me where is the problem .
Hello Omid,

Please, disable multi-core support and try to check the router then.
/system hardware set multi-cpu=no
/system reboot

Regards,
Sergejs
Unfortunately it is not possible to set multi-cpu=no in production .
please suggest another way .
Here is another supouts
There is no another way, what you can test.
Perhaps you can disable multi-core in day, when the load is lower (at least it
would be better, then rebooting router).

Regards,
Sergejs
You may try to divide load between one or two additional routers, if the
traffic is too high on the particular RouterBOARD.
Believe or not but mikrotik does not support some of it own features . they simply bypass you .

You can also use supported and tested x86 hardware as well. www.mikrotikrouter.com is an example.
