ROS 4.2 Web Proxy Drive Bug

Wed Feb 10, 2010 11:44 am

Hi there,

I recently saw an issue on my RB1000.

We have it configured as web proxy with a 8GB CF drive as cache. At some point the web proxy stopped using the drive as its cache and switched over to memory only. This resulted in 0 cache hits and a large amount of traffic going through the proxy unnecessarily.

Using Winbox the following was true under web proxy settings:
The Cache Drive box was blank.
And the status was "running".
However hits were 0.

I tried to disable and enable the web proxy without any success.
I eventually fixed the problem by deactivating the CF under System -> Store, and reactivating it again.

Cache Drive is now showing "CF1" and status is running.

I am hoping that this situation will not repeat itself as I am not very keen on checking up on the web proxy every few days.

I hope this issue can be fixed soon!

It would be great to know the steps, which lead to the problem.
As well more detailed information about /ip proxy configuration/status and /store will be required.

Hi there,

It is not possible for me to say exactly what happened as I do not log into the system every day. I just noticed that the cache drive had somehow been disabled, and I took the necessary steps to enable it again.

Attached are some more information which I hope helps:

/store> print
Flags: X - disabled, A - active
# NAME TYPE DISK STATUS
0 web-proxy1 web-proxy system backup
1 A proxy_flash web-proxy CF1 active
2 user-manager1 user-manager system backup

/ip proxy> print
enabled: yes
src-address: ---
port: 8080
parent-proxy: 0.0.0.0
parent-proxy-port: 0
cache-administrator: "---"
max-cache-size: 8000KiB
cache-on-disk: yes
max-client-connections: 600
max-server-connections: 600
max-fresh-time: 1w1d
serialize-connections: yes
always-from-cache: yes
cache-hit-dscp: 4
cache-drive: CF1

The proxy is setup as a transparent proxy and all company Internet traffic is routed through the proxy from the RB1000.

Thanks!

The plot thickens....

We had some power issues in the office this morning, and after the power stabilised and all the system were up and running again it became clear that the cache on the CF disk was lost or erased.

Cache used is down to 5MB.

What is the point of having a CF disk if you can lose the contents of the cache when the power fails?

Uptime, Cache Used, Successes, Not Found, Non cachable, Expired
01:31:00, 2752 KiB, 1756, 23519, 493, 162
01:40:00, 7247 KiB, 3058, 25480, 538, 219
02:26:30, 5592 KiB, 3575, 34254, 787, 320
05:27:50, 7316 KiB, 4939, 78779, 1859, 438

I've been keeping a close eye on the data in the cache and there really appears to be something wrong. It seems like our system is incapable of building up cache as it grows by a few MB and then drops by a few MB consistently. Even after 5 hours it's cache only grew to 7.3MB.

This is from a transparent proxy of an entire companies Internet browsing with roughly 50-60 computers.

Received from servers: 737 187 KiB
Sent to Clients: 743 395 KiB
Hits Sent to Clients: 3 269 KiB

Max Fresh Time is set to 8 days. I decided to clear the cache (Clear Cache button) completely to see if that could help the situation but it has not.

Something is clearly wrong!

I disabled my Compact flash drive and formatted the drive.

Now I am unable to activate the drive again as the drive's status is invalid. I have tried to clean the drive, tried to check the drive and even rebooted. The status remains invalid.

I can't seem to find any information with regards to the store page of Winbox on the OS docs for 3.0. What should I do?

- Install MikroTik RouterOS 4.5 on the router.
- Unplug CF card and plug it back.
- Try to format it once again.

I have upgraded to ROS 4.5, removed the drive, formatted it again and checked it. It's status is still showing as invalid.

Anything else I can do?

Yes the drive is working. I removed the drive and tested it on a USB compact flash reader. In Windows I then formatted the drive successfully to FAT32. I re-inserted the drive into the RB1000 and it now does not even show the drive under the Stores menu.

I tested both our primary 8GB CF, and an additional 8MB CF that I had lying around. Neither worked.

I have managed to get the CF working again using ROS 4.6. I wish I could say for certain what's different between today and last week.
