RouterOS v4.6 released

Fri Feb 26, 2010 3:57 pm

What's new in 4.6:

*) only accept dotted decimal notation for IP addresses. Use of numbers
with leading zero, numbers larger than 255 and non-decimal numbers
is not accepted (but still can ommit third or second and third numbers,
if they are zero);
*) email - user must enable tls explicitly
*) remove limit on number of multicast enabled interfaces, maximum was 32;
*) dhcp server - show last-seen time for leases;
*) dhcp server - do not create busy lease if client declines all IP addresses;
*) fixed - when closing winbox terminal window with active serial-terminal
console command, serial port sometimes was left in acquired state;

Also some Netinstall improvements for installation with USB flash drives.

Re: RouterOS v4.6 released

Doesn't work for me:

First time PPPoE wouldn't authenticate and then it crashed and rebooted with a kernel error.

Went back to 4.5 and all was well.

Second time, didn't crash, but PPPoE doesn't work.

Went back to 4.5 and all was well.

I was hoping the OpenVPN bug would be fixed as well... I guess I'll wait for the next version.

I've tried this is in the past and never gotta uTorrent to pick up that I downloaded the files manually. Is there a trick you know of with uTorrent to allow downloading these files and seeding them if they didn't come from the original source?

Torrent stalls at 54.3 percent. Do not see any Mikrotik IP's in the list of peers? You guys blocking p2p at your gateway? ;<)

Something's gone horribly wrong.

I downloaded everything and uploaded the mips-be.npk to a 411 and rebooted.
I uploaded the powerpc.npk to a 600 and rebooted and I uploaded the mips-le.npk to a 532 and rebooted.

All three machines have come up with an error "system error - broken package" and then the name of the file that I uploaded.

I tried both ftp and copy / paste.

I downloaded a second set of files and still the same thing.

HELP!!!

Some other people have reported this, but so far most people (including myself) have had good luck with the files we have downloaded. Can you try downloading the packages again to see if you still have the problem? Also, what packages are you trying to install? The complete, or several of the individual packages?

I'm getting the broken package error as well! I've tried both the 400 series and the Intel / AMD versions and I get the same error on both machines. I am downloading with http from the US site. I've tried it from a web browser and using the fetch command. There are several threads with other people having the same problem. I'm not sure if it makes any difference, but I was upgrading from 4.5.

If the tracker accepted the files you downloaded via http (it shouldn't have, unless the tracker files were corrupt out of the box as well) then they are broken now too.

You should NEVER manually add files to a torrent stream unless you have confirmed they are clean and intact.

This looks like a good reason to pass on 4.6 for a while.
My suspicion would be that someone was try to get a patch in at the last moment and borked the archive.

Looks like 4.6 is getting pulled - lots of dead links if you can navigate the broken web pages to get to sites on the dropdown list.

Dunno if it's LV MT pulling, or the mirror sites.

Hi, I upgraded from v4.5 to v4.6 on RB800.
The CPU Temp shows on v4.5 70C but on v4.6 the CPU temperature monitor shows constant 121C - downgrade to v4.5 the monitor shows 70C!

Is the CPU temperature monitor bug from v4.4 back again?

Cheers!

Problems for me as well.

Firstly, the download from USA failed MD5 but the one from Latvia was okay.

Upgraded to 4.6 and lost the ability to bridge between a VLAN tagged interface and the internal switch on a RB750. Downgrade to 4.5 made it work again.

I too have had Broken Package, on RB 112, 153, 333, 532A, 493AH.
Yup, everyone of the boards I had, had the same Broken Package issue.

Try'd Only COMBINED package via HTTP.

don't download from the torrent, see above - the MT seed is gone, so somebody is seeding you their broken packages. The HTTP downloaded packages are fine. We will fix the seed ASAP, sorry guys :(

I downloaded the http packages, not the torrent.

Suggest you reload all files to all mirror servers and clear caches so we can all start over.

Re: RouterOS v4.6 released

Sun Feb 28, 2010 4:00 pm

I just tried downloading it again, and tried to install on a RB 153, and a RB 112 though winbox, dropping the file into FILES, and reboot, in log shows, Package broken.

If it matters, I am upgrading from V 4.4, not 4.5.

ADD: I changed the Download site to be LATVIA, and that file worked good ( Combined package )

THe first times I tried download was USA site.. Think there is an issue with the file on that mirror. You may want to check all of them, I dont have time. :-)

So the USA Mirror site is giving bad files!!!

I have tried to upgrade 2 RB411AH from 3.31 to 4.6 today. No matter what I do, I get a file corrupt error when moving the combined file and when downloading the complete zip file, I get CRC errors when unpacking the files. I have done this from 2 separate PC's

4.5 changelog before 4.6:

...

Now there is no *) fixed Nstreme issues with bridged traffic

Or my x86 either. That freezes after an L2TP session has been up for a couple of minutes - totally frozen, even at the console. Disable the L2TP client and it stays unfrozen.

supout.rif on its way to support@, but I've not heard back from them re the 750 problem yet, so I don't hold out much hope... :-(

Does anybody have any links to x86 version 4.5? I upgraded this from 3.30, so I've nothing in the x86 4.x tree.

After fighting 4.6 on my 900mhz (XR9) connections all weekend - I downgraded to 3.30 and suddenly they all worked.
Today - after getting calls about slow connections - I checked and was having high latency and lotsa drops network wide.
I did a test downgrade to 4.5 - same problem.
I downgraded to 3.30 and all is well - bizarre!
Have been running 4.5 and 4.6 for several weeks.
Go figure - I caint!

It's not fair to state "I tested and downgraded".

A network engineer does not just "test and downgrade" but should state exactly what he discovered in much greater detail!

A RouterOS user does not just downgrade. He must send a supout.rif with the problem to support at mikrotik dot com so that they have chance of either spotting a configuration mistake and letting you know, or spotting the actual cause and fixing it in upcoming releases.

RRRIIIIGGGGHHHHHHTTTTTT??????

My network stops working and we go into crisis mode - remember - we are a for PROFIT business model and when our system stops working - our customers stop paying.
Having used MT for quite some time (7+yrs) and knowing what we know from the past - ie AP's stop working after several days after an upgrade - we immediately go to what has worked in the past and then we test after stabilization.
With several hundred towers in the field and several thousand pieces of RB/MT on them we do not have the luxury of playing with the system to find what the problem is and BTW this forum is for reporting issues we have found.
Quite the silly thing to say - wouldn't you agree!

So the problem must be XR9 related, right? What RBs do you use with these cards? These things you could have included in your post mate.

What rubbish.

A network engineer has to ensure his/her network runs properly.

If an upgrade caused a problem, the primary responsibility of the network engineer is to get the kit working again.

It is NOT to leave the system inoperative whilst they do the testing work which should have been done by the system vendor in the first place.

Remember - MT are releasing products which are supposedly tested, working and stable. They even remove access to older versions of the software to make the point that everybody should be using the latest versions. If those latest versions don't work, it is MT's fault and MT's fault alone. The testing should already have been done.

NAB, right, but that guy then can't complain with simply "it didn't work, so I downgraded". We can't fix a problem if we don't know it exists.

Make supout.rif file and send to support with proper problem description instead of just complaining.

Yes. I agree, and that is exactly what I do (see ticket 2010030466000103, for an example). But sending a description and a supout.rif is a far cry from stating "exactly what [was] discovered in much greater detail"

However, given that the release should have been tested and fully documented when it quite clearly wasn't, I do think that the OP has every right to complain.

I would point out that the auto-reply sent to e-mails to the support@mikrotik.com address states that the sender should report the bug to their distributor - how do you know that somebody complaining here hasn't already done that?

I'll repeat what I have said before - by removing older versions and stating that everybody should be running the latest versions, when those latest versions don't work, we have absolutely every right to complain.

If you are serious about people reporting bugs, why don't you set up a bug tracking system (bugzilla) and make the whole process more transparent?

it does exist, but only for MikroTik internally. Support screens it from users, because many reported 'bugs' are just misconfigurations

Ah-ha, so it's our fault that MT aren't more open with us? May I venture to suggest that if the documentation were more complete, a large number of these misconfigurations wouldn't happen in the first place?

However, this is a good example of why opening the product to the community would benefit MT - make the bugtracker usable by everybody and use community members as bug-marshals.

NAB,

Not everyone on here runs large networks and can speak MikroTik in their sleep.

For every one of us with networks of 100 or more machines, there are probably 10,000 people with two radios, no knowledge of wireless and even less desire to read the documentation, trying to get point to point connections to work.

If there was a public bug tracker, we'd get bugs like "2422MHz is congested in Great Massingham - my link to my mates house doesn't work".

Having said that...

Maybe it's time for MikroTik to think about making a version available to the public.

Let's say you draw a line under - for example - ver 4.2 or 4.5

Then you can make that version with all it's code available to the public so that people can work on their free version of the operating system the way they want it for them. There could be people wanting to do a version of Winbox for Linux. Let's call it Tuxbox. Or there could be people out there itching to create a proper web interface for RouterOs so that a router could be configured from any device, anywhere without access to the command line or winbox. Like what pfSense has.

There are people out there who've compiled pfSense and are running it on the PC Engines boards. Maybe they'd be crazy enough to want to do the same thing on the MikroTik board.

So for that lot, I say give them the code so they can carry on, while you guys carry on with your commercial version of the operating system.

Over time the two will split and you'll end up with something like Debian vs Ubuntu. You pays your money, you makes your choice.

There are so many features in ver 4.6 that make it top heavy for my client applications that I would like to see gone. I'd love a mean, lean, stripped down version of the operating system that can go onto a RB411 that does one thing - route packets. It so frustrating doing an operating system upgrade, then having to go back and remove IP6, Hotspot and other stuff that gets loaded by default during the upgrade.

My two cents worth.

This has been asked before. MT refues. Maybe we better have more secure closed source routers. The bored security specialists could do damage if they knew more about MT from the inside. I don't want my Internet connection stopping because some kid had a chance to put a hole in my router.

I have never used combined packages to upgrade the OS %) just install only necessary ones =)

With the added advantage to MikroTik that they'll still make money from hardware sales. In fact, I'd bet they'd make more money - if ROS is opened up, I would practically guarantee more people would want the hardware.

But that's precisely my point. If the bugtracker was open to all and members of the community were made bug marshalls, most of the first line support questions would be answered by them and you could concentrate on developing the product.

Ah well. Maybe I'm just an idealist.

Re: RouterOS v4.6 released

I don't want to start flame, but I will make a few suggestions:

Does anyone here use Linux? How about Windows? Which has more vulnerabilities, and who's are critical? Which is open-source, and which is closed-source?

Now, do not misunderstand me, I'm not necessarily saying open source you whole product, but the claim that open source leads to more hacks is a bit far fetched. Imagine this: someone finds a vulnerability in Mikrotik, and they exploit it. Who do you depend on to fix it, well... only a select people. If a wider range of people have access to suggest deeper level changes, not only can more people suggested fixes, but you can choose the best approach. More brain power is better then fewer brain power.

I know companies have to make money, so I understand commercial products. I do however believe nothing wrong with an open bugtracker. Say you give community access to rate bugs they see, a +1/-1 system. It then becomes very easy for Mikrotik to sort and fix the highest priority bugs. Once a bug has been "approved" by Mikrotik, they can then lock it so no further changes from the community are allowed. People "subscribed" to that bug can then get notified through email when it's fixed. This will keep more people aware of changes/fixes, and will produce a much more satisfied customer base. What if someone posts "My wireless doesn't work", well, no problem. Since the community has access to "un-approved" bugs, they can self-monitor the system and rate down the bug. What about malicious users, well of course you have that, and in fact, Mikrotik, do you see much malicious email sent to support at mikrotik dot com? It will work the same; in fact, you could put in a filter system (same as support email) before someone can gain access to post changes. This will not produce more work, it will only shift from e-mail support -> bugtracker sign-up validation. Communities are very close-nit, and this world is full of very brilliant people, all willing to improve the software they use (including Mikrotik team).

I guess to sum-up, I believe a more open bugtracker is the least you can do. What about this: give it a shot, see how it works, and continue on. If it works well, (like many people are saying), then hey, what do you have to loose? I also believe making Winbox open-source would be cool (or even Dude) as these are free products anyway. All this will do is improve them at a faster rate, leading more people to use them, vising the website, and purchasing Mikrotik equiptment/software.

Anyway, like always, keep the opinions coming, it will only make Mikrotik better.

Not that I'm taking a side, but I want to state my gut feeling right now:

It makes more sense to me if the company MT simply hires more developers and testers.

If I want Open Source I have all the Open Source projects that are already out there, aren't they more than enough?

tell me the ticket number of this report, as I don't recall any reports about "bridged traffic with nstreme"
What ticket and what report? Compare changelogs for 4.5 and 4.6 and you will see one entry

4.5
*) fixed Nstreme issues with bridged traffic

magically disappeared.

http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=38316
vs
http://www.mikrotik.com/download/CHANGELOG_4

ohhhh now I understand what you are talking about
Now there is no *) fixed Nstreme issues with bridged traffic

Should I assume its broken again?
no, you should assume that somebody messed up the changelog.

ok if you really need to know - changelog is generated automatically. one line was added by hand. at next release, file was overwritten by a new generated file. handmade edit was lost.

Yes you are not getting mac-connectivity, but this is also true for webbox, I don't see anything else that can't be done with API.

Put v4.6 on my 750 and it would no longer talk to my Motorola PTP800.
Very strange as it would talk to my Ligowave device and my PC, just not the PTP800.
Had to abort 4.6 to get things working again.
