rb600 crashing and rebooting

Sun Mar 07, 2010 2:48 pm

Hello.

I have a RB600 with the latest packages (4.6) installed and lately I've been noticing the router has been crashing. I don't know what's going on since I can't see anything in the logs, all I see is "router was rebooted without proper shutdown by watchdog timer". What can be causing this problem?

Any suggestions...

Thanks in advanced.

My first rule: Check the power supply.
How is the RB600 getting power? Power jack (10-56vdc) or PoE (38-56vdc)? The specs are here:

I have a 48V power supply (ac adapter) connected.

Voltage is good. So how is the power getting to it? Power jack or CAT5? Length of run might help.
I am not ruling out a device failure, just want to make sure.
How many radios are connected? I saw your other post.

EDIT: Just saw your edit. That is 48vdc.

I have an AC line going up a 100' tower. Cable is about 130' long. I also have rb411 connected to the same feed at about 40' of the tower and that one doens't get restarted.

I have 4 Valemont radios connected to the rb600.

@landysaccount: Check "/system routerboard print" on that RB and post it here.

What model are the 4 Valemount radios? If they are their 2.4GHz 1000mw radios, then they typically draw 5 watts each. The RB600 typically draws about 10 watts. That means about 30 watts is needed at the RB600. That is 1.6 amps at 48vdc.

These are estimates based on typical power requirements for these products. You generally want a bit more to be safe.

Even though you have 48vdc, you might not have enough power for the radios. Power is measured in watts. How many watts (or amps) is your 48vdc power supply?

I had same problem, replaced the RB600 and it did same thing. I have heard there were a batch with bad capacitors. I replaced with a 433AH and problems are gone using same config and OS version.

That is how rumors get started.

routerboard: yes
model: "600A"
serial-number: "189801FD4431"
current-firmware: "2.16"
upgrade-firmware: "2.20"

How can I find out the power consumption on these units?

You have firmware v2.16. Type "/system routerboard upgrade" to upgrade it to v2.20 and then reboot your RB600. The problem should be gone.

About power consumption: link.

I meant the current/actual real time consumption.

Realtime power consumption? Not possible. Sorry.
Upgrading firmware helped?

Not really. Is still rebooting itself but, can't tell for how long it runs.

So, 4 Valemount 1W radios on daughterboard might be over the save limit?

What is the rating on your 48v power supply? To be safe, it should be 750ma or better. That would be 36 watts. Any less that that and you will have problems. You can check with an ammeter if you want to know the exact current draw.
