Problems with DNS in Version 4.x

Tue Mar 09, 2010 4:41 pm

Hi all.... i have upgraded to version 4.x (i already tested 4.2, 4.4, 4.5) and in all versions i have a problem in DNS, after a time working normal the dns stops, and in the dns config the primary and secondary ips revert to 0.0.0.0 and the "allow remote requests" is unchecked, i set the ips manually and check "allow remote requests" again, but does not work, mikrotik reverts all to 0.0.0.0 and uncheck the option..... the dns only return to work after a reboot....... after the reboot all options are ok, the primary and secondary ips are set correctly and the option "allow remo..." is checked, and all working normal for a time, after a variety time the simptoms occour again..... exist some solution to this problem???

Thanks in advance, bye.

PS: In this moment i using version 4.2 (its the more stable dns version at this moment)

PS2: Sorry for the bad english.

Try "/ip dns print" from a terminal.

I too had problems with the MikroTik DNS server. I was just using it to cache records, as a resolving DNS server. After a couple days it would stop responding, so I stopped using it.

I could not get solution to this problem, not updating to latest version it worked ... the solution for me was to leave the Mikrotik DNS completely, I setup 2 servers with Ubuntu + bind9, set up the profiles of my PPPoE servers to new Ubuntu servers.... problem solved, never had problems with it.

dikobraz23: Does this behavior continue as recent as ROS 4.9?

Normis et. al.: Has the MT crew identified the problem?

Nando_lavras: might you have a dhcp-client configured to use peer DNS?

I too am using all types of RouterBoards, spanning multiple 3.x and 4.x releases, and have not had this problem with DNS. It occurred to me that DHCP could be changing the DNS settings, that's all.

The problem I had in version 3.x. The problem is only on a quad Xeon server where it is connected to more than 1,000 users. Simply fails to Table of so many demands and time to go mental and tables where the same set DNS are 0.0.0.0.

Must be a problem of x86, I do not use Routerboards for servers, I use servers (Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM), but no more problem for me, the problem has been solved using the linux DNS servers.

Yes, there is small possibility, that problem could be on x86 routers. Anyone who is experiencing the problem with DNS in the same way, as Nando_lavras described in the first post, it would be great you can do small test.
Set the configuration to your router,
/system hardware set multi-cpu=no
/system reboot
Please post your report here or contact support (support@mikrotik.com), thank you very much for your help.

dikobraz23 thank you then do not switch additional cores.

Nando_lavras,

1) Have you rebooted the router after setting the configuration?
2) How long you should wait to get the problem with DNS? How frequently it occurs?

If I do not switched core, the CPU is at 100 percent.
Server: Supermicro i3000, Quad XEON.

Problem occurs sporadically. Roughly once every three days.

1. Yes i rebooted the router..... after this in the resources tab show me only 1 core..... but the problem occours in same way....

2. There is not a right time.... has arrived to work one month without any problems ... but have had weeks of almost daily to problem ... has not a right time, just working and a sudden stopped working, I just knew that would stop because customers began to call saying that he stopped to browse.

Sergejs as I explained above I am no longer using the mikrotik dns, I swapped for 2 ubuntu + bind9 servers because of these problems and dropped out of mikrotik dns, if one day I re-use it sure will make the requested test. ... I'm so not because of testing has caused many problems for my clients .... after I started using the new dns with Linux already has a few good months that I have no problems .... thank you for your attention.

PS: Someone who is experiencing the same problem could do the test for Sergejs??

There are no reports about the particular problem anymore, we asked 1 or 2 people to tune the configuration and we do not get any feedback.

Ive had this problem too, but only once every few months.

/ip dns print gives an error timeout.

Reboot fixes it for the next bunch of months.

I have this problem too for the last year or so, differnet versions, where nothing works, dns lookups fail. I always blaimed my ISP who were very nice to give me credits for lack of service, but then the problem kept comming back, not very often, but it does. I has this on my main router, a 493AH. happened about 7 times in 10 months. reboots for me sometimes fixed the problem, other times after 5 reboots, it still was a problem, so I used a backup config file, then it worked. Never had time to dig into this issue, just happen to stumble upon this thread today.

I'm running 4.10 since it was released and have not had an issue that I can recall now. The issue was there on earlier versions, just dont know which ones.

Re: Problems with DNS in Version 4.x

Sun Dec 05, 2010 5:39 am

I have had this issue in the past every few months...

BUT now I have been having it 2 or 3 times a day, sometimes within 10 minutes after a full power cycle.

I cant confirm its DNS, but dns requests do not get a response, such as on a tracert cnn.com etc.
Also Cannot PING a Domain name, DNS fails, AND cannot ping a known IP of a device ( on internet ) that responds to ping.

Pings, and all inside LAN stuff works.

I have my cable modem plugged into ether 2, and bridged with ether 3 where a voip box gets a public IP. DHCP client on Ether 2 also gets Public IP. This is on a 493AH board.

This VOIP box has connectivity when this issue happens, phone will work, it is just bridged to get public IP not NATTED.

All other devices that are NATTED have no access to internent, ANY protocols.

I do have another RB 493 ( Not AH ) that has its ether 1 connected to this first 493ah Ether 9 port. I have NEVER had the issue with NAT failing on the 493. To clarify, the 493 (notAH) is at a remote location Ether 1 from this device is connected to ether 9 on the RB493AH the one with the problems.

This actually drives me up the wall since when it fails, I need to reboot the router, but that ussually is when I come home, and other people depend on this internet access.

I have had 3 Cable modems in the last few days, ISP trying to help me, the first two were Docsis 2.0 and the third one I use now is a DOCSIS 3.0. The best part of the whole issue was in the process the ISP used the docsis 3 and upgraded my plan at no charge, so instead of 15 Mbit down, and 1 mbit up. I now get 50Mbit down, and 3 Mbit up... So I guess I did benifit from it kinda.

One thing my ISP does, which may be normal for all cable providers, is they have a CONSTANT ARP data going on on the ethernet side of the cable modem. Dont know if this would matter, but worth pointing out. It is a Motorola Docsis 3.

NOTE: This was working on earlier versions, and just this week was on 4.12, then upgraded to 4.13 and still having issue.

Re: Problems with DNS in Version 4.x

Wed Dec 08, 2010 1:42 am

I have sent the email, and recived a quick response....

Apparedly there is no fix for this problem, but I was told that i should use a RouterBOARD instead. Funny, the problem is on a 493AH Routerboard. I email that information back, but have not heard back yet.

Seeing as V5 will probably be out somewhat soon, is this an issue in V 5? or has it been fixed?
Is this hardware specific issue?

This was not an issue before, but has gotten worse as new releases came out. At what version did it work properly?
Why Do I see this issue only on a 493AH, and not on a 493 routerboard? Both do natting, and run thier own DNS.

*******************
Turns out that this may not be the same issue as described above. Seems as if Checking USE PEER DNS on one interface cuases another interface with DHCP client to use that Peers dns, which is an internal IP with no route to it. ( WIerd setup on my stuff)

Apparently, this problem occurs only on x86. Today I had this problem again and everything returns to work after the reboot. I'm using version 4.16

Support, any solution for this bug?

Thanks in advance
