Pantech UMW190 and RB433UAH.

Sun May 23, 2010 6:10 am

Hi.

I have a RB433UAH and I am working to get a Pantech UMW190 to be recognized so I can set up a PPP session with Verizon Wireless. I can insert the card and it boots fine. It is also recognized by the Routerboard as you can see here:

[admin@MikroTik] > /system resource usb print
# DEVICE VENDOR NAME SPEED
0 2:1 RB400 EHCI 480 Mbps
1 1:1 RB400 OHCI 12 Mbps
2 2:5 Pantech, Incorporated UMW190 USB Modem 480 Mbps

But there is no corresponding port created:

[admin@MikroTik] > /port print
Flags: I - inactive
# NAME CHANNELS USED-BY BAUD-RATE
0 serial0 1 Serial Console auto

As such, I can not create a PPP adapter to use the card.

I am using the latest MikroTik RouterOS 5.0beta2. I also tried with 4.9 with the same results.

Wondering what I am doing wrong? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

John

Try setting the routerboard boot delay to 9sec.

You need to activate the modem using windows. Update the firmware to latest. Update location db. Log in under windows a couple of times to make sure there are no activation issues. Then put it in.

You should see usb2

You may have a bad modem.

We have had no issues with the card under 4.9

Doghead,

One thing I noticed when I put the card in my Mac is that it mounts as an external disk. When mounted as a disk, the card would not work with my Mac either! When I unmounted it, it works just fine.

I did activate with Windows to verify functionality.

I now have it working with my Mac.

I am thinking that the RB OS is mounting this as a disk too. Is there a way to see if that is happening? I'm going to poke around a little in the OS tonight to see if I can mount and unmount drives. I know it's capable of doing this but I never intended to use it this way so never researched how to go about it. My theory, though, after seeing how the Mac behaves is that it's mounted as a disk and the OS stops trying to find a modem or can't find a modem at that point.

Thanks for your ideas thus far.

For the record, I can't see that it is mounting as a disk. However, on my Mac it's very annoying and will mount as a disk that has to be unmounted to use the modem. I can't help but wonder if something like this is happening on the MT. I still can't get it to be recognized on the MT for some reason.

We have a number of these out in the field that are working fine. I just purchased two new ones and we are now having the same issue. Did anybody find a resolution to this?

I upgraded to 5beta4 and the card works now. I meant to put this in a previous post in my testing the last few days but didn't get around to it. We have been dealing with some quirks but don't know if it's software related or the aircard itself. But I do have it working now.

One thing to remember to do with the UMW190 that I forgot to do on a recent build is to deactivate the Verizon USB storage partition. If you don't do this then the modem will not be detected.

Use the Verizon wireless manager to do this.

So far no problems on ROS4.11 or 5.0b5 on RB433UAH.

Upgraded bootloader to 2.27 too.

Five systems all running perfectly. Through my experience, the UMW190 is the most stable EV-DO modem I have found.
