From the changelog:

*) fixed bug - hotspot could crash if radius authorization is used;
*) fixed WPA with AES encryption sometimes not working;
*) fixed nstreme with compression;
*) fixed multiple PVC issues;
*) updated Czech Republic regulatory domain info;
*) fixed WPA for virtual-APs;

Now that we have a supported release, I'm struggling to see the advantages over v2.8. There are a lot of "nice to have" features in Winbox etc. but what are the fundamental differences? From MT home page:

Full release V2.9 is out! [Documentation]

New features include:

Best wireless performance (I'm having alot of trouble with wireless performance and published tests look like a marginal improvement to me)
Significantly improved Nstreme performance (OK, if you want to use an MT only protocol)
Even more powerful QoS control (Where?)
P2P traffic filtering (seems identical to 2.8 eight protocols detected)
High availability with VRRP (same as 2.8 )
Improved command structure and interface (Yes)
Smaller and Less resource-hungry (Yes)
Tons of other new features (hmm...)

What am I missing?

Legal to use in EU at 5.8GHz ?

That's quite important ...
(well, in 2.9 we have DFS, but we're still waiting for TPC)

I posted on 14 Aug a request for help in getting the routing things going, but with no real reply forthcoming.

I did Policy routing going on ver 2.8, but no EQMR.

It seems a pity that now anyone helping with beta testing can get no formal support (unless you pay USD 250 per month!!)

I still have been unable to get either of these features to work. I cant think what I am doing wrong with the equal Cost Multipath Routing - there isnt really much to do! Maybe its IS just broken ??

Yes - legal to use in Eu / UK.

IT **has** TPC. In the UK we are only required as I understand it - to be ABLE to control the TX power. We can do that on the atheros cards.

Set whatever power you want.
In UK there is no requirement for 'automatic' power reduction - unlike in some Eu countries I understand..

Thanks for point that out Bill, I meant automatic TPC, AIUI most EU countries require that. The manual TPC has been in MT a while now.

I droped it on me development router today..
It was a bit shakey during the install... (package management issues)

but when all the correct packages were loaded and tweeked in, it came up great !!

I am right that UK only requires ability to control power aren't I - 95% sure I am ....??

Yes you are. This is specific to UK under the requirements of IR2007. I am not aware of any harmonised EU rules for 5.8.

Was there no DFS in 2.8?

Nice it working verry good the 2.9 release :-)
i have uppdated in production 5 PtP links and 4 AP cells. working verry god. and the ping time is around 2-3 ms on a 10 Km PtP link with -73 dbm in signal and 24 Mbits.

I think the main improvement is in the firewall. They have added many things to be more specific in rule matching. They also added the address-list which makes it easier to make a single rule for multiple ip addresses. That goes for queues, firewall, and mangle.

Another main difference is the layout of winbox for you GUI fans. Things are better layed out like bridge and wireless interfaces. They stick together in the own main windows.

Another feature added is support for multiple DHCP-clients. For some this could come in handy. Speaking of DHCP not sure if 2.8 had this but it also has a DHCP-Server Alert tool. You can specify legimate dhcp servers on the network, and if it detects a rogue, you can have it run a script to do whatever you want it.

I know there are more, but these are the ones that come to mind

There are too many new features to list - 2.9 has way more flexibility than 2.8 and is a smaller footprint. I don't know how they do it really.

My favorites are address lists, multiple dhcp clients, and scripting enhancements. Im still waiting for a better scripting debugger though - one wrong key and you can spend days tracking it down.
