MikroTik RouterOS version 5.0beta3 released!

Thu Jun 17, 2010 4:42 pm

What's new in 5.0beta3 (2010-Jun-17 13:46):
*) hotspot - drop hotspot specific tcp connections from non-hotspot clients
already at firewall;
*) lcd - added support for AX89063
*) console - output of '/ping' and '/tool traceroute' commands is more
in line with the rest of the console commands;
*) api - '/ping' and '/tool traceroute' commands are fully functional;
*) console - added 'server' and 'server-port' arguments to '/resolve' command;
*) lcd - show free/total memory in units of million bytes (MB);
*) lcd - added page that shows system identity;
*) sstp - made it work with Windows 7;
*) sstp server - client reconnects did not work;
*) winbox - implemented proper maximize support for inner windows;
*) fix 5&10MHz channel support for 11n cards;
*) added IRQ balancer;
*) enabled PCI MSI on i386 multicore setups;
http://www.mikrotik.com/download/router ... a3.torrent

Important note!

Latest beta release 5.0beta3 have initial support for two features,
1) IRQ balancing - allow IRQ assignation of to a specific CPU
2) PCI MSI support - allows to avoid most situation when several physical interfaces are with same IRQ
Bottom line - with these 2 features you will be able to assign specific physical interface to specific CPU core.

IRQ balancer can be found in "/system resources irq" menu.

Specifying ranges of confederation-peers under bgp-instances is broken in winbox.
/ routing bgp instance set 0 confederation-peers=65510-65520
works from cli but not from winbox.

Also making any change on bgp-instance window in winbox causes configuration entered in cli to be lost.

N connection that was running nice at 20mb/s tcp is now not doing so well. Also a snmp voltage query is now failing on 411AH...

Take the new RouterOS MIB file and use it with SNMP-walk, you will see the value. There is no name, because there isn't supposed to be a name.

Sounds like exactly the problem I had with a RB230. Completely trashed the boot - no beeps, nothing on the console. Even a netinstall didn't work - it downloaded the files and then just hung. The only way I could resolve it was to take the CF out and do a NetInstall directly to that. Then I had to contact MT and arrange for a new licence since the softID had changed. Having spent a good three hours trying to solve it, I came to the opinion that I was lucky the RB230 boots from CF and that I could remove it. Had it been, say, a RB750, it would have been completely bricked.

I have just tested that with v5 b 3 the Drivers page is .. a window to another dimension :P an alien dimension :P so it can't be seen. So the ordinary peasent will see it as a funky distortion of the screen. Only those with blue blood will se the aliens waving at him :)

Seems to work ok on RB433AH, RB433AR, and a RB800.

ROS 5.0beta3, seems to have influenced Winbox a bit, What's with the different styles..change of font and such? Windows7 Influence?

Wish you guys could add a feature to WinBox that would at least allow you to select, or deselect, all the features of any particular window with a single mouse down.

Especially would like to see dialog boxes that had no vertical limit so I could squeeze more into a smaller LCD screen without having to overlay.

I need to do further testing, obviously, but my first test of 5 beta 3 shows about a 5dB increase in signal.

edit: disregard this, something fishy going on here.

Ok, -70s tx, -60s rx, 48mb up, 5.5mb down, 80% CCQ up, less than 20% ccq down on 2.4GHz.

5GHz, -80s tx and rx, 24mb up, 18mb down, 80% CCQ both ways. Dual band rootenna, R52N, single chain.

I can access the tower from my laptop here, this is where I set my CPE's, generally high 70's, low 80's signal, 60-70 ccq typical. This dual band unit generally has worse signal than my standard CPE, however, 2.4GHz RX CCQ is much worse than it was running 4.x or even 5 beta 1 and 2.

AP is RB600, R52H, 12dBi omni running 3.28.

Yes i concur.

I saw it for a second and then winbox closed because I was obviously not worthy to witness other dimensions.

In a very simple SOHO environment on a 750G and 450G 5.0B3 is very stable so far. I have not tried out the Metarouter, but I assume the NTP + Metarouter issue is not addressed yet as its not in the list of fixes for this release.. Not that there is any hurry...

You know,,, completely off topic, well sorta,,,, As a hobby I run a web site that lets you watch the Large Hadron Collider run live, they might find the extra dimensions you mention :)

SSH forwarding still appears to be broken (was also broken in beta2, not sure about beta1) in beta3. I use SSH forwarding to a web server, but the SSH session keeps crashing with "Connection reset by peer".

Oops....

I cant even get a console to work on a MetaROUTER via Winbox.. I add a new router and the console window opens but I cant type in it..

Also a reminder to anyone doing these betas with routerboards. You should upgrade the boot loader. We are now on 2.7..

I have an issue with a 433uah since upgrading to 5.03 (bootloader is also updated) that periodically when logging in by winbox the response comes back as "connection refused"
This can only be rectified after a hard boot or(as the interfaces eventually die as well) after watchdog reboots the router

This did not happen at all on any of the earlier beta releases since 5.0 but has started immediately after upgrade to 5.03...have a supout ready to go

Mac Telnet is also not working.

This box is a BRIDGE + Filter, which still passes traffic + filter filtering, so I will leave for now :P

And P.S. earlier, I had to log in with SSH/MAC Telnet and change WinBox port, because it was also returing Connection Refused, and after I changed it and then changed it back, it started working again. Until this happened - no way in, as described.

And P.S. 2 even earlier, when I first established the Bridge + Filter config, it went to a 100% CPU. I rebooted it and it went down to below 10% even under heavy bridge traffic. Amazing I was thinking to myself, this smalle device can do miracles. Until a miracle happend to it and it got bugged :P

I believe the problems reported are related to our not having proper alignment of our chi.
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Qi

That, or as previously mentioned by NetworkPro, the transport layer to the other dimensions is a little sketchy because of worm hole instabilities.

I love playing with Beta's ! There is even the remote possibility of bricking a unit ! SO there is even danger involved ! What could be better, the unknown, danger, other dimensions...

warwick09: Actually 5.0B3 is pretty stable. Its been running perfectly for me on a RB450G and 750G, aside from the MetaROUTER console window not working, But thats ok, not a big deal for most people.

That said. No one should try beta's unless they are at least reasonably skilled in handling adversity. Like debricking for example. I think many times its easy to forget that a beta is, well, a beta. There is -zero- guarantee it will work correctly. They sure try hard to make it work well, but its not possible to work out all the bugs. Its here so we can help test it and help Mikrotik find things wrong and work out how to make it a stable release.

Most people should wait for a Release Candidate not just a Beta.

But most of you know these things.

warwick09, come on, jump right in. Its fun. Its unknown. Its VERY helpful to Mikrotik.

Which version did you upgrade from? Is your device really appropriate for running User Manager ?

I have an issue with a 433uah since upgrading to 5.03 (bootloader is also updated) that periodically when logging in by winbox the response comes back as "connection refused"
This can only be rectified after a hard boot or(as the interfaces eventually die as well) after watchdog reboots the router

This did not happen at all on any of the earlier beta releases since 5.0 but has started immediately after upgrade to 5.03...have a supout ready to go

further on from my above post...I am now seeing "System rebooted because of kernel failure" in the logs and then the unit reboots

8+(
no such issues even remotely similar in the earlier betas on this board.

after upgrading to 5.03beta3 routerboards are not booting.... any idea?
The same problem on some x86 platforms after upgrading from 4.10 to 5.0 beta3. I had to go on the location to reinstal RoS and to downgrade to version 4.10.

Ive upgraded about 10 boards to 5.0b3 for testing SSTP and so far, so good... RB1000, RB1100 and amix of RB450G, RB433AH, RB493AH. RB1100 isnt installed yet, though...

The 2 things I have noticed so far. On my RB1000, the CPU will read 100% usage, but I dont think it really is 100%. Im still pulling 10-20mbit when needed over an SSTP/OpenVPN tunnel.

The idle timeout doesnt seem to want to work properly on SSTP. Basically, I need the connection to get destroyed if the client disconnects. Right now, if the client improperly disconnects, the idle timer doesnt count up. Its like it is looking at traffic going into the interface, even though it cant go through the interface. So I have to manually clean-up the old connection before the client can reconnect.

:shock: wow,, dude,,, you installed a beta remotely. :shock:

I guess the only thing more gutsy would be to upgrade a router up on a tower remotely.
Or, upgrade a live production point to multi point setup with beta all around. On towers.

U know.. I dont think its a good idea to install a beta on anything not sitting in the room with you. BUT I do have respect for living dangerously.

I had lightning pop the ethernet port on a 600 170ft up a tower. Just put a wireless hop on the ground and kept going.

I upgraded it a few times, then I had a different board lose the wireless package during an upgrade...

:shock:

That 600 is still running 3.17, and I think it will continue to until I bring it down and replace it.

Now, to keep this on topic, when are we going to get more information on TDMA?

Can we at least find out if it will work with older A/B/G chipsets?

And.... I just had SSTP/Ovpn crash again on my RB1000... ongoing problem for 6 months

It has to be something to do with allowing only 1 connection per user and the connections not timing out if the client doesnt tear it down properly. Router continues to function, but wont accept any more PPP connections. PPTP, Ovpn and SSTP.

Im getting pretty tired of this.

5b3 has been a disaster for us. Upgraded x86 system and it started to flap it's backhaul, then crash. Upgraded the AP (RB333) and that started to flap it's backhaul and then crash when trying to winbox into it. Downgraded everything back to 5b2 and all is sane again. It looked like it was related to the ack timing, but when we changed the connection to short headers instead of long.

can't agree more. people should stop advising others here about not using beta software on production devices. I'm quite sure those who do, do it for a reason. not to mention, most of the time ROS has "hidden" updates which are not specified in the CHANGELOG file.

beta3 locks up my RB1000 every now and then requiring power cycle, eventually had to downgrade to beta2.

autosupouts sent to support@, Maris is handling the ticket, no reply yet though.

so far for my needs, beta3 has a broken ssh forwarding, broken counters in /system resources, and unidentified regular lock-ups.

I use IPv6, queue trees, DHCP server, DHCP client, PPPoE client, PPTP client, NTP client, tons of filter/mangle/NAT firewall rules.

Hahahaha, I agree with you but mistery must be discovered... I installed it on that way because I wanted to try new RoS on my currently working network. However, every lesson must be learned on more difficult way, right?

Similar problem (memory leaks?) - ROS 5.0beta3:
RB750G - ROS 5.0beta3 - Hangs every 13 hours. Work after reboot.
Image
RB450G - ROS 5.0beta3 - Do not hangs, but the free memory decreases linearly.

We have a problem with add or delete rules throw API (PHP) in 5.0beta3 released.
It sometimes work sometimes not.
In 80% API work, otherwise not.

This happened after updating to version 5.0beta3 released.

Re: MikroTik RouterOS version 5.0beta3 released!

Sat Jun 26, 2010 7:35 pm

I have tested RouterOS V5Beta3 to my server router with bonding 2 Gigabit ethernet Broadcom for outside traffic (BGP to local internet exchange)) and Intel pci-express with 4 Gigabit ethernet for inside traffic (3 servers). the router stable for 24 hours. but unfortunately incoming and outgoing traffic stuck in 1 Gbps only. I see IRQ and CPU is assigned automatically. I'm still confused why traffic only stuck in 1 Gbps, it should be 2 Gbps... ??
please help me...

my server spec :
- HP DL140G3
- Processor 2 x Intel Xeon Quadcore
- Memory 2GB
- Resource/CPU Load 25%-30%

If you do a bw test between two servers, their ports are 1gbps each so the test will show 1gbps per direction. Depending on the test and CPU usage while it runs. Are you comparing results with another version of RouterOS or another OS or hardware?

FYI, I had the memory leak thing show up on 433AHs and 450Gs and 493AHs, but after upgrading firmware to 2.27, it seems to have gone away. Have about 20 routers running on 5.0b3 in production running SSTP and they seem to be stable. Some for over a week now.

I always upgrade the bootloaders (a.k.a. "firmware" @ /system routerboard upgrade). Memory leak exists.

I have a procedure for beta's.

Upgrade the router. Upgrade the bootloader.

Reset the config to default. I like the idea of clearing the NV settings to what the defaults should be for the new version.

Copy/paste a script with my settings. This script ONLY has the changes I need.

Reboot.

I then try to not touch config and just see how it works.

BTW im on 9 days of uptime on a 450G and 5.0B3. So far no issues to report. Well memory use might be going up.

Somewhat agreed. Except that it should work on an upgrade... Lets say even 10% of routers in production get upgraded, that is going to cast a long shadow over the amount of routers sold NEW with said version.

Im changing my tune on the memory leak. My RB1000 is showing it... Didnt notice it at first. Also checked a couple RB4xxs. My guess is the bootloader SLOWED it.

Re: MikroTik RouterOS version 5.0beta3 released!

Sun Jun 27, 2010 7:13 am

Well the reason for my "procedure" was because I had upgraded and downgraded and sidewaysgraded and played with my config until it was raw and eventually I ended up with a 450G and 750G that were psychotic. The settings all looked fine in Winbox but all sorts of things were not working correctly, it was hanging and src-nat was not working at all.. The lights were on but Norman Bates was at home.

I reset to defaults and loaded the script and everything was fine.

So from that point on, I decided on a testing method I would use for all my beta testing.

This is really different then for the vast majority of installs where you config once and then upgrade infrequently. I think for those of us who fiddle with our config a lot and upgrade and swap versions around its good to start from a clean slate now and then. I just do it every time. I did a lot of the Open-WRT beta's and you ALWAYS start from a clean slate or you can brick a router. So its just built into my psyche to start from a clean NVRam or you might brick something.

Absolutely its important to know if a normal upgrade path works. So maybe to test this, it would be good practice to start with the base version, reset to defaults, paste in a script, and THEN upgrade. This would eliminate any possibility that some previous corruption of the base version corrupts the upgrade. So start with a known clean base version before upgrading.

Side note... When down grading be careful of the bootloader. You will need to downgrade that too. You do that by upgrading to the downgraded version :) hehehe...

Sorry, I mean 1 Gbps test result is total bandwidth for 3 ports. so each port utilization not more than 300/400 Mbps. that test using RouterOS version5 beta3. previously I'm using version 4.4. the reason why I upgrade to version 5beta3 because my bandwidth utilization stuck in 1 Gbps.

anybody ever test intel pci-e with quad port gigabit and get result more than 1 Gbps ??

We have a problem with add or delete rules throw API (PHP) in 5.0beta3 released.
It sometimes work sometimes not.
In 80% API work, otherwise not.

This happened after updating to version 5.0beta3 released.
Downgraded to 4.10 and it's work ok. But have old problem with many not dropped session.

Cant say for sure yet. Have about 20 SSTP connections, but all OVPN/SSTP bombs randomly which you said is because of OVPN.. But im not upgrading any more because of the memory leak.

The memory leak requires a reboot every 8 hours on my RB750. MT said they fixed it for beta4.

SSTP is working with IPv4 and beta3. I wish SSTP would listen on IPv6 but it does not. :( I only have one IP at home and I use HTTPS. That means I can not use SSTP at all. Win7 only supports port 443. If it worked with IPv6 then I have plenty of IPs.
