PPPOE Problem

Fri Aug 26, 2005 12:11 pm

Hello,

i have a problem with the PPPOE server.
Clients can login, but sometimes they can't download anything.
The pppoe connection on the computer show that it sends but receives anything.
When clients disconnect an connect again, it can be that the problem any longer does not exist.

Can you help me??
It's urgent.

If you search in the forum, you will find good method, how to find correct MTU.
Main idea: start from 1300 value and find border, whan something does not work.

Then i do believe it's not the PPPoE server ;)

If all your clients had the same problem, then it would be the server. Perhaps it is a problem in the network or client side?

If you are using windows pppoe (god forbid!) then make sure your users turn off the windows xp firewall otherwise interesting things can happen.

I'm agree with sten, maybe problem is not the PPPoE server side, you can install another PPPOE clients software,e.g.:enternet500,I think so...

DNS Server work fine.
PPPOE give the corecct dns.

It's amusingly, it functioned months long with this configuration.
suddenly went nothing more.

If I type "ipconfig /all" (windows) is this the result:

IP Address = 190.160.2.100
Subnetmask = 255.255.255.255
Standart Gateway = 190.160.2.100
DNS Gateway = 190.160.1.1 (IP from MT)
62.xx.xx.xx (DNS from ISP)

If I conect my Laptop, it not function sometimes also.

Sorry for my english.

Are you able to ping both the DNS's? The gateway? Can you traceroute to any IP? Are you able to resolve things?
Have you talked to the person that configured the pppoe server?
That person should at least have a basic understanding of IP and PPP(oE) and know how to debug.

When the connection are down, I can't ping the Gateway.
I can't login with winbox, too.
I only see, that the pppoe connection are stable and it sends information but not receive.
The DNS can't ping, too.
But when all works fine, I can ping always.
It's a amusing thing.

Now I have reset the MT and reconfigurated without backup.
I hope that the problem is resolve

Are you by any chance using windows xp service-pack 2? Try turning off all firewalls. Other than that, the problem is unlikely to be pppoe, it's more likely the transport layer or your client.
Read up on bridging and pppoe. Read how they work together.
You need to know what you are doing. You would possibly benefit the simplicity of a statically routed network instead of a bridged pppoe network. it's often easier to understand and get right.

Franco,

since in some cases I am having a similar problem, could you please explain the situation and how did you managed to solve it ?

We are still using in an 80% windows PC directly connected to the network, and using winXP pppoe to connect them to our central mkOS server.

Can we interchange some information ?

thanks
Gianluca

OK, I have a similar problem. Network schema is this:

(Clients) <=> (AccessServer) <=> (Router) <=> (The world of WWW)

After upgrading the Router from 2.8 to 2.9.5 a interesing thing did hapened. Some clients that are using Windows98 can connect to the AccessServer without problems but they do not have any browse/ping/anything - the same as the problems of franco. One my colegue found a resolution for this problem. When ip header compression on the client win98 is disabled and there is no problems any more. However it's not the biggest comfort to go around all your clients and disable that. So my question is - is there a way to solve this problem from the configuration of the Router or AccessServer.

Please, MikroTik team answer this question or if it is an implementation problem/bug, please try to resolve that.

10x

well, there is no problem with win XP. It is only with win98 PCs. Today there have been more than 20 calls for such problems. I'm iterested if there's a solution with configuring the upgraded router.
