Will RB1000U Handle 2-3 BGP Sessions

Tue Jul 06, 2010 6:33 pm

I recently had to switch from an x86 platform to an RB1000U due to stability issues.

I've been reading on these forums that the RB1000 is very capable in handling bgp sessions.

With 512MB of ram, will it handle 2-3 BGP sessions?

I will be having 2 providers at first and then 1 possible public peering point added.

Please let me know.

Depends on the number of routes. If you want three feeds with full routes you should go to 1.5GB RAM. If you're just getting defaults and announcing a few blocks of your own, it'll do fine with the stock RAM.

Do you think it will handle 2 with sessions with full routes?

Probably, but it'll be close (I don't have anything running full BGP on RouterOS, but two full table peers on a Cisco 7206VXR shows a little less than 512MB used). And since memory is used for other purposes, too, you could very conceivably run into issues.

RAM is cheap. Downtime isn't. I don't see the point in trying to save yourself $100 tops and taking a risk.

Makes sense.

Do you know what type of RAM it needs.

On the website it says SODIMM DDR but do you know what Speed?

And if there is only 1 memory slot how can it take up to 1.5GB of ram? I've never seen a stick of 1.5GB ram before...

If anyone knows a source that sells compatible ram please post!

Thanks for your help!

Roc-Noc does _extensive_ RAM testing with RouterBOARDs (because they're awesome).

The site lists the following:
NOTE: Ram can be expanded up to 1.5GB of DDR2 667 (PC5300). Available RAM configurations are 512MB (stock), 1GB, and 1.5GB.
http://www.roc-noc.com/product.php?productid=109

I don't know if they sell just RAM - if they do maybe consider ordering through them as you can rest assured you'll get the right stuff (down to which vendor, make and model of RAM sticks work best).

It's one slot, and if you put in 2GB sticks 1.5GB will be usable as that is maximum the current version of RouterOS can address.

Ok that makes sense...

It will take a 2GB stick but only use 1.5.

Here I was googling 1.5gb sticks!

Thanks for the help!

I contacted R0C-N0C and they recommended this brand on their site.

https://www.roc-noc.com/product.php?pro ... t=0&page=1 $85.00USD + $25.00USD shipping to Canada

Funny thing about it is, I recognized the image from Newegg.. They used the Identical Image with scratched off UPC code (that's how I remembered it)

Newegg.ca has the identical for $50.99 CAD + $9.99CAD shipping to Canada.

Again, thanks for all your help!
