We are thinking about next places to go to, how about
Australia in April? Please vote only if you would actually be able to attend, not just "love the idea"

Yes for sure our gang from PortMoresby would be there also. Brisbane suits our skin shade and love of 30degree heat so that would get our vote for location.

Australia = Dry, snakes and spiders lol
New Zealand = green with no snakes and the spiders dont kill you
You should really ask the question NZ or Aus ?
I guess it is closer Europe

What about Byron Bay? It's not far from Brisbane
It's difficult for people from other capitals apart from Brisbane to commute to Byron.
It's about 2.5 hours driving distance from Brisbane.

I would certainly go; prefer Brisbane but can do Sydney.

Interesting that Byron Bay would be suggested, that'd suit us fine !!! We've built a wireless network with 40 + AP's and hundreds of rural clients all situated on the north coast, our office is in Byron Bay.
That being said we'd be more than happy to travel anywhere in Australia or New Zealand for a MUM.
New Zealand is a great country !! Im sure most others would agree.

I'll go as long as it's not too hot like Scottsdale. And this time I'll fly.
What is the weather like there in April?
I've been to Sydney twice in the past. For those traveling from the US mainland, Hawaii makes a nice stop-over to break up the trip. Last time I did that (18 years ago), we were allowed a three day layover with no penalty.
Either NZ or AUS are fine with me.

Just thought I'd throw in a question: Should this event (if it goes ahead!) be called "MUM Australia" or "MUM ANZ"?
Perhaps we could alternate every couple of years or so between an AU and NZ city?
Cheers, Mike.

Don't really care where it's held, I'd certainly be attending.

To be fair, it takes some effort from the users ('us') to show enough interest to kick things off ;-)
Don't forget that even though support for Mikrotik product is growing in our region, we are still small compared to other countries. The more people we can encourage to support a first MUM in Australia, the more likley it will become a regular event! :-)
Cheers, Mike.

you're right - the long haul from west coast USA to eastcoast AU is a killer (18 hours nonstop from Melbourne to LA!) but it's much more pleasant (and often cheaper) if you break it up by taking a domestic USA flight to Honolulu and then there are some discount AU airlines that do the run between Hawaii and one of the eastern AU capitals. :-)
Cheers!
Mike.

MT need to keep in mind that the cost of attending down here is quite high compared to operators attending say a EU or USA MUM. Flights alone booked today are $380USD and accommodation $80-120USD a night is to be expected so to count on a 4 day trip your looking at $700USD-$860USD for flights and somewhere to stay. Compare this with flying from UK to Prague and flights alone are only $180USD.
Its not going to be cheap for us to attend and you may not pack out a 200seat hall but MT has neglected Oceania for some time and there is a fair few users down here, Remeber AU and NZ is only 25.6 million people and the UK alone has 61 million

yeah thats fair enough, but also understand its the same costs, probably more for us to travel to the US, or more again to europe for a MUM, which is very prohibitive for alot of people here who want 2-3 people to go.
I think europe and the america's have had their fair share of MUM's recently.
The last one we were able to attend was in Singapore which was like 4 years ago now. Whilst there have been a few in asia the cost to attend is still quite high.

Yeah that's true but I was trying to make MT aware that it would be very costly for us to attend a AU MUM and they may not get the levels of attendance they are used to in EU/US

Using this population logic, to an outsider it looks like Sydney would be the natural choice. It is the largest city at 3.6 million. It seems to be the most common Airport destination from outside OZ. It is within reasonable driving distance of three other large populated cities... Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide. Also close to Newcastle and Canberra. The only large city left out is Perth but I am guessing that there are reasonable flights between the two cities.
New Zealand looks to be straight across the Tasman Sea from Sydney so I am betting it has a reasonable choice for flights.
I don't know what how lodging and resorts compare in Sydney but I am guessing they are plentiful.

I wasnt using population for the venue just responding to MT saying they need more people to vote YES and that attendance might be lower than what they are used to but is still a needed MUM

Hi Justin,
MT should change the pre-requisite to "MTCNA or relevant experience".... There are a lot of people who MTCNA would be a waste of time for, but would find MTCRE useful.
Yes, i'm going, it sounds like there is going to be a decent Kiwi contingent there.

I have seen many RouterOS "experts" who can't pass the MTCNA test, but are running large RouterOS networks. You would be surprised what interesting things you can learn in MTCNA

I don't necessarily agree here. I think people mistakenly think the MTCNA is a "basic" course. It is the baseline MikroTik course, that is true, but is by no means a basic course. I have had many experienced users come on the course just to get the certification, but inevitably afterwards they tell me that it was very interesting and they learnt a lot of new information. (I considered myself one of those with "not much to learn", and I was surprised at the amount of information delivered in what I considered a basic course)
The course is about more than just knowledge transfer, it is a chance to mix with your peers and a great opportunity to try out the features that you may have read about but never had time to deploy in the field.
I have trained many hundreds of delegates and never once has someone come back to me to say that they have not learned anything new or that it was a waste of time. In addition most who come on the more advanced courses without doing MTCNA struggle to catch up to the rest of the class.

I wasnt trying to put down the MTCNA.
I did it at the Dallas MUM and found it was excellent, it filled in a lot of product specific knowledge gaps. I find after the course, a lot of the "why have Mikrotik done it this way" now makes sense.
I was just pointing out, there are a large number of people who have been using RouterOS for a very long time, that would get more value out of the MTCRE than the MTCNA.

Normis,
I, for one, have already registered for MUM and MTCNA training in Brisbane.
Hope to be able to recoup my investment with knowledge from training by David Savage.
Cheers

I just registered. I am looking forward to a a few days of vacation and relaxation on the Gold Coast and topping off the week at Brisbane MUM on Friday.
See you all there. Stop by our table to say hello and pick up a free roc-noc T-Shirt.
Tom
PS We still have some free show vouchers available for the asking.

I found MTCNA excellent, also additionally the feedback from the trainers of all the other questions you need answers on is invaluable. I have opted to go to Jakarta and do some traffic control training (even though the Gold Coast is great this time of year).

Around 150 have registered, which is very good for a first MUM in the region. Please spread the word so we can gather more people, and make this event a great one!

www.duxtel.com.au) for your incredible generosity and hospitality. Thanks Mikrotik as always.
You aussie guys complaining about travel times are a bunch of wimps.
I am leaving for the Airport in a few minutes. Should be back home in about 26 hours.

Great city, Very friendly. The event was awesome, I managed to fine tune some of my MPLS skills and designs and the feedback I got from my v6 talk was great - It seems to have made many people there look at how they are going to deploy it and push forward with it

Yes, I really enjoyed it too.
Thanks for the IPv6 presentation, there were many good points covered that I have not seen anywhere else. Your slide explaining the IPv6 prefixes was excellent.
The presentation by Dainen on their WISP was really interesting too.
I look forward to the next event.

How about Melbourne 2012
If you guys timed it right with the next SE Asia one you wouldn't be stuck with 26 hour flights home

Hi All,
the MUM was definitely a big success by my assessment! I had a great time meeting and talking to everyone, and even learned a few new things :-)
Sydney 2013 sounds pretty good to me - an even in Melbourne means commuting every day! :-D
But really, anywhere in Australia or NZ - I'll be there!
Cheers! Mike.
