Ares P2p Protocol

Wed Sep 28, 2005 11:52 pm

I have noticed a lot of p2p slipping through lately. Has Kazaa protocol been updated and Mikrotik not support it yet? Does Mikrotik support Ares?

Ares not being blocked

Thu Sep 29, 2005 4:58 pm

You are right. I raised this matter some time ago when testing MT configured as transparent bridge to block P2P on school LAN. I have just one rule. I tested many P2P apps, Ares 1.8 and KaZaA 3 got through with no problems. I guess its not been fixed. Several more experienced admins suggested limiting number port connections per IP to stop P2P apps. I have not had time to check this out.

Come on MT fix this P2P issue please. Please. ;-)

Peter

P2P update needed MT

Fri Sep 30, 2005 2:45 pm

I am with Matt on this one. P2P marking needs to improved within MT since it not much use at present when users are using the latest P2P clients such as Ares and KaZaA which just go straight through current MT version.

P2P is a mjor problem for many admins and MT have a nice solution to implement but the P2P part needs an update.

MT please could you comment on priority in updating P2P part of MT code???

Is anything going to happen regards update to P2P code???

regards
Peter

Just installed the Kazaa and added a mangle rule to mark the kazaa p2p and it started to count the traffic when I strarted to use it. and it counted all the downloaded files traffic.
About Ares - you can only drop it, it isn't possible to mark - I should be written also in the manual.

thanks for you input. Which version of MT are you running?
Which version of KaZaA did you try?? V 3??

Ares - drop only, yep I know several other post point this out but thanks for mentioning it. Have you tried Ares 1.8.1 client - it go's straight through MT even when rule uses "DROP"

I am opnly interestd in DROP function as intended use is on school LAN.

Yes, I downloaded Kazaa v3 from the download their download site, installed (they have lot of adwares). Added mangle rules in the forward chain to mark p2p traffic and added queue rules with that flowmark. Searched some mp3 files and started to download - all is marking....
I will check that Ares 1.8.1 client and report back.

doesn't matter, our P2P tracking is looking at the connection for p2p signatures not at the port number.

Tested Ares 1.8.1 - p2p blocking is working.
Added drop rule that drops p2p=warez in the forward chain and the Ares can't connect any more to the server.

Mon Oct 03, 2005 7:18 pm

Het Uldis,

thanks for your replies . . . pleased to hear P2P is being blocked.

Which version of MT are you using??

I must download the latest version and retest in bridge mode.

Your info gives me encouragement . . . sounds kile MT have improved the P2P stuff at last.

BTW did you juts throttle KaZaA 3 or drop it??

KaZaA . . . adware nightmare!!!

regards
Peter

RouterOS v2.9.5 using Masquerading.
If the router can limit the speed on the Kazaa then it can also drop it.

You are using bridge mode... note that you need the connection tracking enabled to catch the P2P traffic.
