WISP and Cable network Traffic Shaping.

Sat Jan 08, 2011 2:54 am

Hi, Ive been entertaining the idea Of using Mikrotik Router OS as a Transparent traffic managent device a-la NetEQ or Packeteer.

Does anyone have experiance deploying Router OS on high end X86 Hardware at the ISP level? How has it impacted your bandwidth usage?

Right now, we use a net EQ which does a few things. On a per ip basis it analyses traffic. If that IP has been using a lot of bandwidth it places it in a "penalty box" with reduced speed for a period of time.

It also gives priorities to IP's over others as well as place a TCP connection limit.

It looks like Layer 7 filtering on mikrotik router OS cculd be superior.

Due to the emergance of netflicks and other video on demand services our bandwidth requirements have doubled this year, from 100mbit to 200mb during peak times.

What i would like to do is deploy a mikrotik shaper at each leg of our wireless backhaul network to prevent congestion before it reaches the edge router at our fiber termination point.

So yeah, has anyone deployed such a thing with any success?

Of course you can shape it however you want with MT. Unlike the other boxes though you would need to build your own system, but that should work better for you as you can prioritize that as much as you wish or as little. You can also give bursting abilities if you wish . It may not work 100% like their solution but close enough plus the extra features can bump it over the top. You may need a consultant to help you with that as well, MikroTik has a number of them on their webpage.

Im working on a proof of concept rb450 transparent shaping device. does anyone know what kind of hardware i would have to run in order to handle 150mb/s wourth of traffic? I am following exactly the examples in the mikrotik layer 7 wiki.
