Connecting two sites over internet and hardware selection Qs

Fri Nov 18, 2011 3:55 am

Hello,

I have a RB493G connected to BT Broadband 7.6m/44k (Three 3G Backup). My parents have Virgin Media 20m/76k but no RB yet.

My aim is to have both sites linked by a tunnel over the internet (always connected), which would allow routing between the two LANs (remote support/upgrades, sending files etc). The hardware would need to have wireless 802.11n and a built-in switch (if possible). Gigabit ports would also be preferable to Fast Ethernet.

I would like to know what you would suggest for 1) which RB for parent's house and 2) which type of tunnel to use to link the two sites.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Kind Regards,

Tony

For the tunnel I suggest making an IP/IP tunnel between the two sites and then encrypting it with ipsec.

This will then allow you to use any form of routing between the two sites.

We use this in an enterprise environment and it its very reliable and keeps the ipsec policy configuration very simple.

Check out Greg sowells website for a training video.

Thanks Alex. I will watch the video tomorrow when I have spare time.

Any ideas about recommended RB hardware for the other end?

Hi,

It seems that the RB493G is your only real choice to get wifi and enough ports to switch with.

I would suggest an RB493G with indoor case, an RB52N Wireless card with two indoor antennas.

I have just seen the RB751U-2Hnd

That looks like a good machine. Everything integrated.

And you can add a 3G modem for backup internet link.
