ROS v6 Suggestions

How about updating the P-Throughput field to be more accurate and work in all wireless protocols.

Then we should have this field update every x often (ability to set the x).

Then have that as a $wlan1_pthoughput variable that changes.

Then have the ability to set queue tree and simple queues with simple math expressions =$wlan1_pthoughput * .25 ..

This would allow us to create pthroughput QoS systems dynamic based on the actual link. Also addition of pthroughput options on other types of interfaces including Ethernet etc, so that we can use it as well.

P.S. Add to hotspot profile - "Incoming/Outgoing packet mark" two more mangle rules. Not only packet marks but also a connection mark before them and use that conneciton mark for packet marking. This would make my life easier and my router would finally bread with full loungs beacause I must use this kind of setup, with every client seperate marked.

Support BGP BASED LABEL Distribution for mpls

peer menu is for peer configuration.

advertisement menu is for advertisements and advertisements already can be printed by peer name
/routing bgp advertisements print peerx

i think its will be very usefull to add "local adress list" parameter to User Manager/Users for example in my network I have UM on border router with QoS and limitation based on PCQ and adress lists of clients,
but address lists I use for filtering, redirect to any web pages and many diferent things on this border router. will be great if i can use something to add "remote IP to" address list on the same router with "user menager"

for this moment user menager sent "adress list" to radius client but this client only terminating pppoe sesion

I hope that everyone understands what I mean

It would be very nice for the wirless advanced settings to be able to adjust the SIF, SLOT, and ACK timing by hand and also make it so you can see the values change when setting different distances. As it seems that is a very big part of why there are speed issues and bit erros over the air, especially in 802.11n. Also it would be nice to have the ability to adjust the beacon interval on AP and Bridge mode, this way it can deal with noise better if you can set the beacon from a range of 10ms to standard 100ms. I have helped develope many wireless products and these are a must for performance.

I would really like to see LAC / LNS functionality in RouterOS. I am sure that there are others who would find this functionality rather useful.

I would love to see Winbox support more than just CHAP protocol when authenticating winbox logins to Radius. I would really like to see it support MS-CHAP or PAP specifically. We use encrypted LDAP backend and it only supports PAP or ntlm_auth challenge tokens, which excludes CHAP. Makes it very annoying to try and maintain our login accounts.

I would really like NOS-style point to multipoint IP tunnel support backed up by proper RIP handling.
This would give backwards compatibility with current implementations and add great flexibility:
-usual endpoint setup -> works the same as now
-setup without target address (anonymous target address) -> allow adding multiple targets via add route commands (so that the added gateway represents a tunnel endpoint for that IP address or network via the IPIP interface)
-accept RIP broadcasts via the IPIP interface to setup these endpoints dynamically (RIP containing address/mask and gateway which will be the endpoint for that interface - this also needs a network and gateway ignore list option for own network segments on other interfaces)
-send out the interface routing via RIP (address/mask with endpoint as gateway)

Please back to UM CLI commands as v4.x. Especially assign profile to user is not useful on new version.
For me, credit system was much better then profile. I couldn't use properly.
But caller id good feature v5.x.

Currently the diagram is not accessible when internet is down (perhaps due to misconfiguration) or blocked.

3 things i would love to see

1) Notes. <- A simple manual entry log by admins that go , ##date time $user, "disbaled wilan2 - Grid removed for maintenance" <- or something like that just so that if you login to a router you can see what someone else has done,

2) "Better flow tracking in winbox" oftine i can see a ip that's using a lot of bandwidth on the "pppoe-out" but finding that on the inside network takes a little bit of time, and geussing. would be nice to have the option to see actual source and actual dest as well, or like in the firewall with connection tracing, have the ability to see the Throughput there.

3) "wireless snapshot" - After configuring a link be able to take a snapshot that will store the tx-db rx-db and ccq for the link, then at a later stage you could click compare, and you will be able to see what the link quality is compared to what it used to be. its helpful when you do maintenance on many many sites, then you can off the bat check if the link has changed. Could even be used to bring notify you if your link changes by more than 9db @ speed, or whatever...

record data from an interface over time. xml, cvs, txt or something. just make a file with desired values.

eg:
/interface wireless *get=some of the values" "duration = some time" "time = 1s"

and a file that would be something like:

wlan1

CCQ,TX,RX etc etc etc
xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx <- from 1s
yyy,yyy,yyy,yyy,yyy <- from 2s
zzz,zzz,zzz,zzzz,zzz <- from 3s

I know there are possible getting this in other way, (eg SNMP, still limited) but to get values over a period of time, or during some kind of test to a file would be a nice feture.


a lot of use.... signal strengt/rates over a time... etc etc etc. i changed a rate. what does signal do? have this in a format that is possible to use. maybe in exel, import to a sql etc.

A way to configure which protocols are bridged. Like a BROUTING chain on bridge firewall.

I would like to bridge only IPv6 on one interface and route IPv4.

I'll be happy, if there will be LLQ (Low Latency Queueing).

Our clients often calls to a support angrily, because their online games latencies goes to a non-playable 300-1000 ms, or social networks loads really slowly, that's because of hidden windows update, forgot torrents, antivirus updates, etc.

With LLQ we can force packets with higher priority to take over other traffic. With current QoS implementations we can't.

1) VRRP watching other VRRP interface. If I have 2 VRRPs - one on LAN side and one on WAN side, sometimes I want to switch both interfaces if one of them fails. This was discussed a few times.

2) Reverse Path Filtering - loose and strict mode - long wanted feature

3) Ability to run scripts on interface up / down

4) Ability to run scripts on route up / down (route watch mechanism where I specify particular route and do things when it becomes unreachable, and when it's brought online again)

1) VRRP watching other VRRP interface. If I have 2 VRRPs - one on LAN side and one on WAN side, sometimes I want to switch both interfaces if one of them fails. This was discussed a few times.
should be scriptable, check wiki about VRRP
2) Reverse Path Filtering - loose and strict mode - long wanted feature
no answer to that yet.

3) Ability to run scripts on interface up / down
hmm. it is doable, but requires a lot of resources now
4) Ability to run scripts on route up / down (route watch mechanism where I specify particular route and do things when it becomes unreachable, and when it's brought online again)
have you tried netwatch for this?

May be this is not all about ros 6.xx wishes , may be its also about new winbox but still please read it.

Queue rates:
I think its time to update the queue speeds for todays needs. I can put it manualy, but it will be faster if its in the list box may be.

Prefered views:
We have some preffered views something like we like to view
in queue list:
Rx/TxMax Limit, Rx/Tx Avg. rate and Total Rx/Tx Bytes
in Wirelless Table:
Radio name, Mac, Ros Version, Rx/Tx signal, CCQ
etc...
So we would like the have possibility set this as default view in each RB.

Upgrades:
We would like to be able upgrade RB firmware remotly in whole network (all steps from 2.9.xx to 2.9.51->3.30->4.17->5.17)
We would like to be able upgrade RB ros remotly in whole network

Licence:
We would like to be able download and archive all licences in whole network
We would like to be able update licence in ros 3.30 automaticly in whole network before upgrading to 4.17

Another bash:
We would like to see possibility to set some parameter using some bash on whole network (RBs and ros) like wirelless neighborow discover = yes or Datarates = advanced

So most of our wishes are about using many RBs and make it easyer manageable to save time.

Possible today, just use Dude, it's a matter of one right-click in Dude. How you imagine doing upgrade for multiple devices without central management server? I've never seen such a technology ;-)

As for boot firmware, it's a matter of writing a really simple script that would do the upgrade.

you cant just upgrade from 2.9.40 to 5.17 in one click

yout need to upgrade to 2.9.51, 3.30, update bootloader, update licence, upgrade to 4.17, upgrade bootloader, upgrade to 5.17, upgrade bootloader better again, and than set all the parameters what was not implemented in 2.9xx version, like disable MPLS package, set datarates to advanced, set protocol to all or nv2 or what do you want etc...


So no easy upgrade possible

Yeah but you can upgrade all devices to 2.9.51 in one click using Dude.

How do you imagine an automated protocol that will disable MPLS and set datarates to advanced and so on and do "or what do you want" automatically inbetween the specific upgrades for the whole network? And maybe for my network I would want MPLS enabled? Still not getting that the idea is insane? The easiest part that you want is to read your mind.

I'd handle all that you want with scripts.

block not to show info about blocking ads on the page-I have to deal with by redirecting to the empty page in metarouter

I'll be happy, if there will be LLQ (Low Latency Queueing).

Our clients often calls to a support angrily, because their online games latencies goes to a non-playable 300-1000 ms, or social networks loads really slowly, that's because of hidden windows update, forgot torrents, antivirus updates, etc.

With LLQ we can force packets with higher priority to take over other traffic. With current QoS implementations we can't.

Always having problems with latency on games when using RouterOS QoS system (pcq, fifo, bfifo, etc) when there's a high load on the network.

This would be the better implementation ever!

Low latency QoS? I don't see any possibility of how to do it with current functionality.

But higher priority on the traffic let to drop high priority packets. It's absolutely unacceptable that low priority packets gets over higher ones.

Are you serious? Look at peoples configs over the forum, their internet speed commonly isn't wider than 40mbit. What they can do with voip and games that requires low latencies on hard line load?

I am Sorry. Gigabit ethernet is the truth. You can have 40 meg service but the ethernet rate needs to be gigabit so that when you transfer 39 megs/FD - your latency would be great for games and VoIP. Right? :)

Use a switch facing the ISP and feed priority packets on one ifs port. Cheaper switches support sending frames the way LLQ jumps the queue for priority packets.

Be careful not to jump the queue for different packets of one TCP connection.

My comment above to use a switch to jump a packet queue is very far from optimal for solving anyone's QoS problems :D

Often the problem is that the upstream connection (even expensive ones) is not good. For example - it can not handle many packets per second or full duplex load.

This is often the case and a reason why I want to use smart Auto-QoS solution and why I was suggesting such software to be made for the routers.

Until we have such solution that is practical to use, manual QoS config needs to be made for each specific case. And if we need to give priority to a lot of VoIP and gaming packets - the TCP download speeds will be much lower.

The solutions sometimes includes balancing multiple connections to increase the total number of PPS.

If someone needs such problem solved - they can contact me with a commercial request to implement the configurations on RouterOS for this.

But better yet - get better upstream connections - connect via GigabitEthernet . If your local providers are dummies and lazy - push them more aggressively. "The packet rate to their router must be very high and full duplex - on top of that - have your specific shaped service. The latency for different size packets must be less than 2ms under load optimally under 1ms." paste this quote to whoever you are buying the service from. Demand the quality and compete OR if not - be a masochist and pay high prices.

So far history shows that ISPs take the load-balancing route and after few months/years - cheaper Ethernet/Ge is available and the switch is made. And I make a few PayPal bucks along the way, helping with the config.
