no, it's only function is to make files available in the local network, for accessing from Windows computers via file sharing. you can attach a USB drive to the routerboard, and store some files there, to be accessible from your connected PCs

please add a fat32 driver so we can move external disks between windows box and routeros without having to reformat. thanks for adding it, hopefully it doesnt bloat the os. it is nice to have in my opinion as long as its stable. on slower usb drives you could possibly cause iowait to go so high and affect other services i think.

WINS should not be used at all. If you still need Wins you have a bad DNS setup or NT4. I don't know which is worst ;-)

This is perfect for Training and makes it much simpler for students to get files rather than via FTP :-)

Start - Run - "\\ip-address-of-the-router" (w/o quotes) - OK

maybe it's just your ISP who blocks SMB on the Internet?

khm... I am the network admin of my ISP :) so, no, that's not it...

I'm connecting to SMB share using a LAN interface public IP, from a range which I route through PPPoE (using the freeradius Framed-Route attribute) without problems...
Only the public IP on the PPPoE interface seems not to listen for SMB... can someone duplicate problem?

Mikrotik uses old version of smb protocol that is off by default in Windows 7. You can set the old version in Windows to get connected but you loose the smb connectivity with other windows stations. Google a bit around it...
