Modern chipsets support (H77 Z77 X79) in ROS 6.x

Thu May 03, 2012 4:25 pm

At the moment non of modern x86 platforms supported (since H67...)

Do you plan to support H77 Z77 X79 chipsets in the very first release of ROS 6.x or we should forget about modern hardware and build our x86 based router systems on old platforms?

Thank you in advance.

RouterOS v6beta3 will have a new kernel and drivers, so probably support will be there.

Thank you soo much! :)) It will be very good! There are a lot of people, who want to build very own router system but at the moment ROS hardware support isn't perfect... Especially support of integrated ethernet chipsets... Sometimes really impossible to find motherboard with supported integrated ethernet chipset, they doesn't produced anymore, for example unsupported modern mini-ITX boards have only one slot for add-on cards what can be enough together with integrated card but useless without...

Can you tell me which integrated ethernet chipsets from Intel will be supported in ROS 6?

It will be really nice, if you, Mikrotik experts, will choose and test 1-2 most interesting (modern) and not very expensive x86 motherboards from each segment (mini-ITX, mATX, ATX, Atom integrated) and share results on the official website, so we can be really sure, that this systems completely compatible with ROS. It will really help to sell licenses for x86 platform. I understand that it's not so profitable as selling own hardware, but will help you to bring your perfect system in each corner of the world! :)))

THANK YOU for your hard work! :D

RouterOS v6beta3 will use this kernel - "linux-3.3.5", you could check linux community whether the chipsets are supported by the vanilla kernel of this version.

Can you confirm, that ALL chipsets supported in native vanila linux-3.3.5 will be supported in ROS 6? I mean can we hope, that nothing will be cuted off at final?

we don't add support for chipsets, but for IDE, SATA, ethernet etc. have you tested these motherboards? which things were not recognized?

None of them working in ROS 5.17, the question was about support in ROS 6... We don't have founds to test all possible platforms by ourself :( That's why I asking you to help to make the right choice for upgrade of our hardware! We are going to move on Intel NM10 or Intel *77 platforms, but all of them have modern ethernet chipsets build in, so I want to be sure before buy!

You will have to test these in RouterOS v6beta3, and if they are not recognized with the new kernel, make a supout.rif file and send to us, we will then add support manually. So don't worry - we can add support.

OK, we will do it as soon as possible. Can you tell me estimate date of ROS 6 beta 3 download availability?

Hello Forum Members,

@RusConSPb
I ask my self what kind of job should be done by a x86 based machine using the chip sets, that were named above
in the thread title, a RB1200, RB1100AH or a RB1100AHx2 can´t do?
What kind? A lot of jobs... :) Any i3 based x86 router with ROS on board is MUCH faster than hardware solutions from Mikrotik available now...(google a bit, a lot of tests around) For example we intensive use OpenVPN tunnels and routing gigabit network on the same x86 server. We tested same configuration on RB1100AHx2 and we got much more pps on x86 system. I don't know about performance of CCR1036, but I'm really sure, that price will be more than $400, for this money you can get perfect x86 server for ROS...

Hello again RusConSPb,

each guy has his own mind and I don´t want to led you to my mind! But with an dedicated view on the thread headline and related on the support for those brand new chip sets I thought quite easy; "Why should they support this?")
The best answer - "Why not?" :))) Actually I don't understand what a problem for you if modern chipsets will be supported?... I understand why you don't like x86 routers but it's you personal choice...

I need new x86 for Mikrotik, I am thinking about this configuration:

MSI Z77A-G43 - Intel Z77
Intel Core i3-3220T
Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB DDR3 1333
Intel SSD 520 - 60GB, OEM
Seasonic X-400FL 400W

What do you mean about it? Will it be functional?
If i set SATA to legacy mode, do I install ROS on it?
(will be functional Mutlicpu=yes ??)

@RusConSPb

totally agree with you ....

i3 ... heh ... even an old Pentium3 / 866MHz with Intel Pro/100s cards,
mixed with wireless cards, acts much faster than majority of newer RB's i have tested.
(plus it dont drop traffic with higher CPU usage)

and those intel lan cards ... with hardware ack'ing and checksumming ... great thing ...

and of course, i have those P3, P4 systems outdoor, working for years, without problem
(one minor problem, i solved on all is - HDD's, solved via using CF adapters and CF cards ... flawlessly)

wisely choose motherboards and cpu's, PSU's (mostly from older brand-name pc's) and it will work for ages

@Rest
of course that price is concened ... since we have amateur, not ISP network type,
we need lot of packets per dollar, and dont have money to throw.

no offense, but even some latest RB's are far from modern i3 systems,
tested and proven, even big-fat firewall list is easily handled.
