VMware ROS, for VPN Server (PPTP/L2TP/SSTP) - viable?

Tue Jun 12, 2012 9:31 pm

Hi
I'm looking to setup a VPN server and whilst I was thinking about windows to run it; I remember that ROS can do it aswell without the overheads.
Could someone tell me if they've manage to get a VPN setup that working 100% and could actually compete against a window VPN server.

I would also like to get it setup as a VM so I can increase the resources as and when i need them.

Absolutely. A lot of people run RouterOS in VMware.

Thanks for the reply.

Is the software reliable for all types of access of VPN? Are there any VM images premade?

Do think I'll be able to authorization/create user using the RM4 (dmasoftlabs?)

Some sort of vmware tools would be handy, even openvm tools but the BIGGEST thing MT could do would be the vmxnet drivers, CPU is fine without tools and the memory only really need ballooning.

If anyone has been able to KVM ROS in any linux distro could you let me know as this is the only way around the issue I can think of but simply don't have the linux knowledge to do this.

ROS in KVM works beatifully, because it includes integrated into kernel virtio drivers. These drivers allow to have high performance network, storage and memory ballooning. For me no issues so far.

I actually meant using something like CentOS as the host then ROS in that.
It's the only way I think you can around installing the VMware tools?
