What do you all think of the EdgeRouter?

Wed Sep 12, 2012 7:31 pm

Looks like Ubiquiti is getting ready to launch the EdgeRouter, and the stats looks really good compared to many MikroTik devices, or even some Cisco devices!

What are people's thoughts?

I'd like to see how the upcoming edgemax products stack up to the CCR.

I think Mikrotik are in trouble now. a 99U$ routerboard that if the tests are true beats hard the AH x2 performance, they "Mikrotik" will have to do something. And it's will be a good battle!

I think the Tolly Group report should have included standard Mikrotik response: "You're doing it all wrong so we are not to blame for this performance"

What do I think?? I think that this is perfect!! Finally low cost hardware and software too from company which take cares for ther clients and have friendly relationship with them, takes in consider all suggestions, critics and friendly words and they're solving issues and bugs in very short deadlines, opposed to mikrotik.
Finally you will not have to wait several years on resolving of a simple bug.

I think I'll wait for the 'counterfeits' to flood the market before I buy any.

Very nice hardware with a os that's actually open source which you can use easily available tools to create your own packages for? Yeah that's a few steps ahead of RouterOS.

Though the biggest plus is that Ubiquiti addresses security issues openly rather than deleting threads.

Mmmm. Nope. It's a real time system. You hit apply and the change is made without dropping anything. Research before you bash ;)

Not to mention that the EdgeRouter OS is based on Vyatta, a proven enterprise routing distro that's deployed in large numbers by Rackspace, Dell, Boeing, Toyota, etc.

Before everyone get's on Ubiquiti train lets not forget that UBNT is publicly traded company with many investors trying to unload the stock due to counterfeit fiasco.

I am very very very intrigued . I'm probably one of the lucky ones . Don't really have too much trouble with my mtk hardware , but unfortunately my loyalty stops with the finance department here.I hope to see the MTK boys step up their game

Oh gawd. Please tell me those are SFP slots on the side of that ERP/ERC.I might have a heart attack.

Last I checked the "fiasco" was way overblown and now that the shorts are taken care of people are buying stock and the price is going up.

I dont think it's going to change the world...

UBNT are directly targeting enterprise and unfortunately they still have a long way to go to get in there (same with mikrotik). The edgerouters look pretty good but it would be interesting to see how they perform when they are put into a normal multipurpose scenario (with tasks that dont get handed off to hardware). Something more than just a basic access list and routing.

RouterOS is diverse but unfortunately when competing with open source to stay ontop of the game they need to be very attentive to their software. They dont need to do it all but they need to make sure what they can do, they do well.

Mikrotik could probably benefit from some more hardware acceleration in their products, anything to get extra cycles for the rest of the router is good to keep them competitive.

Also - UBNT marketing is interesting and funny but i'm not sure how serious they look to the people signing the cheques...

Looks like you did extensive testing.
I wouldnt dare to praise a UBNT System unless i saw it running for a while.

Irony or not, but you are more right than you think!!!
Well, that Tolly Group have their hands bend in some interesting angle - i have RB1100AHx2 in my network serving 100+ customers with some routing, firewall, queues on it and my customers are getting 1,6Gbps throughput out of it every evening. That Tolly Group manage to get only 1,313Gbps in their test, in lab environment :)

It looks to me like nothing more than cheap marketing!!
They probably spend too much money on video advertisement and had to fake test results :)
