RouterOS v6 release candidate 1

Fri Sep 21, 2012 12:05 pm

*RouterOS v6 release candidate 1 has been released*

v6 has many new features, among them:

- Doubles performance for Simple Queues
- New kernel and drivers
- Increases multicore system performance 25% or more
- Increases single core performance 10% or more
- High speed configuration for filters, scripting and other features

What's new in 6.0rc1 (2012-Sep-20 13:13):
*) i386 - increased number of supported cores to 64;
*) userman - fix unpaid profile activation while authenticating;
*) dhcp client - custom options;
*) dhcp options - allow mixing different data types;
*) console - "export compact" now is the default, use "export verbose" to get
previous behaviour;
*) ntp - make it work again;
*) tftpd - if real-file is a existing directory then prefix request with it;
*) RB333 ethernets are back;
*) dns - rotate servers only on failure;
Download it from here: http://www.mikrotik.com/download

To see how much the speed is increased in RouterOS v6, check our our new RB1100AHx2 tests, done on professional testing equiment: http://routerboard.com/RB1100AHx2 (page bottom)

I'm sorry to say that final version of RouterOS v6 will not include this feature, as the drivers we tried to use, did not meet our quality standards, and it is a bit too late to write our own implementation from scratch.

Will this help older boards (133c3). We did not get them all replaced as
customers are lazy climing up.
Or will we get a problem with memory usage?

Updated my test/office AP from 5.20 to 6rc1, just a simple bridged AP, RB411AR + R52n. It lost my IP address and default route.

Took about 3 seconds to log in and put it back, but this could be a major issue if it happens somewhere else.

Bugger, because this is a feature I'm waiting to be working.

This would make the 751 a real consumer option for me.

I tested it on a 750 and a 532, seems to be a lot less cpu intensive. Haven't tried the backup yet to see the issue listed above. Hope we can use this on the box full of 133's we have! thank Normis, tell the guys to keep up the good work!! See you in Louisiana if I can get away.

Is mikrotik going to update all the documentation for their devices with ROS 6 throughput data when its final?

Also could we get the new products in your comparison matrix ?
http://routerboard.com/pdf/RouterBOARD_ ... arison.pdf

edit: i see they have updated the throughput results already for RB1100AHx2

When the sniffer is Running on that interface - in my case RB450G eth5 - the rx drops are not counted - probably the interface is not in promiscuous mode by default and the counter counts every frame not for itself.

To upgrade my RB450G I just dragged over the NPK on top of 5.20. Rebooted and all was well. No need to power cycle for me. Everybody remember to upgrade your firmware too.

So far on my SOHO config no issues. NTP is working.

yes I can imagine downgrading is not perfect at all and when I was trying different non-final versions in the past I have learned that best is to NetInstall clean after format and expect stability then :)

If the version is official release - I had success with upgrading and downgrading by just uploading npks remotely. 8)

maybe i'm wrong but i think if we want a powerful multicore system with ROS6 we will have to wait for Cloud Core Router...

we have to forget about x86 systems

i tried ros5 with several multicore systems (amd and intel) and i have problems with all of them. ros6 i could never make it work with x86.

I have problems with RB450G-I use this script ran correctly before ROS5.18 case, but it is not ROS6.0 sending wol commands.

Another problem is that dude 3.6 ran flawlessly before the board, but not now. System/packages in, but dude client does not open it.

kapode3 and kolorasta, please check the clock of your router.
queue is invalid during the time that is not in configured range, as soon as queue is back to the range state is changed to black.

roadracer96, please provide us with more detailed description about IPv6 problems at v6.x

balintos You should post your script here and then we can see where is the problem.

TKITFrank We are working on the problem with firewall IPv6 rules and statistic.

slech Please send us /export compact from your router, we will try to see what is the reason for such backups.
I have tried on RB4xx/RB11xx and x86, backup files were in normal range.

panteraboy Please contact support with attached support output file, that is generated after the kernel panic.

ffernandes Please make sure there is no problems on layer2 network at your setup (broken card, wire, etc.).

There is no problem on mine as well. As I said - when I turn on the sniffer - rx drops are not counted.

Normis,

All Simple Queues IP addresses STILL does not apply to RC1!! All queues IP 0.0.0.0/0

Is it that hard of a bug to fix????? I really want to try this out, due to the increased queue performance, but I have 300-400 queues with lost IP addresses now!

I have tried 6.0rc1 on 750G.
DHCP client failed to get IP address from Incognito DHCP server (DOCSIS line).

Downgrade back to 5.20 solves the issue.
(100% CPU issue was resolved by restoring from backup)

Hi Normis,

* The User Manager shows some wrong values on GUI. This problem exists since v4.6, until now is not resolved.
Some information is missing on "sessions" table. (see files)
* The informations on GUI are not updated, when i click "F5", only after log off or after restart ros.

Can anyone confirm if hairpin NAT is functional in 6.0rc1? My implementation (per the Wiki) was fully functional in 5.19, however it no longer works in 6.0rc1.

100% CPU usage with nothing going on. Downgraded to 5.20, same problem, wasn't doing it before the update to RC1.

Downgrade to 5.17 and it works fine.

Shouldn't this release be called beta4? I cant understand the point of releasing a RC1 with so many bugs. When I release SW a RC release is meant to go to production and there should be really no issues found. Only in rare cases will a showstopper be found and a RC2 release be done. I dont work with router software but here I thought it was even more important that the SW for a RC would be of a high quality level.

All Simple Queues IP addresses STILL does not apply to RC1!! All queues IP 0.0.0.0/0

Is it that hard of a bug to fix????? I really want to try this out, due to the increased queue performance, but I have 300-400 queues with lost IP addresses now!
why not just export queues config, do upgrade, delete queues and import config back?..

Did someone test RC1 with 1000 pppoe clients, queue tree and 1000 simple pppoe queues? Last time I have tried to decrease my router CPU usage installing new 6.0beta1 with this live router, but not success. Router restarted few time when pppoe clients reached 400.
If someone did this kind of test please let me know. Thank you.

Last night I lost 2 hours before I realised that NetInstall does not work on Windows 8 (rather XP).

This is exactly the sort of thing that can get frustrated users running around and complaining. It is very easy to get the users in this mode especially when they are used to things just working like what the rest of the IT industry tries to sell them.

But I am hardcore and I drank a glass of cold water and I am back online with a fresh install of 6 "RC1" to discover wonderful new bugs.

works fine for us, on all windows versions. please clarify step by step how you tried to use it, and at which point it failed.

Re: RouterOS v6 release candidate 1

RB450G 2009-ish hw rev., bootloader 2.41/latest with its config - reset and over-clocked to 800 (active cooling) RB is powered by 12 volt ATX PSU

I ran NetInstall.exe as Administrator , turned On the NetBoot option, I put in an IP address that is within the subnet that I have on the NIC TCP/IPv4 conifg.

The RouterBOARD finds the NetBoot and waits for the RouterOS to come in. On the serial console I see a message about pressing Ctr-Alt-Del which does not make sense - please fix it? :)

On Windows 8 NetInstall I select the RB and click Install it starts sending packets and stops after 5-6 small udp packets.

I did the same on the other machine with the XP and it worked straight away, NetInstall found the RB waiting and I just had to select and hit Install.

Firewall: off
protocols and services on NIC: all off besides TCP/IP v4
cFosSpeed: off and services stopped (driver stopped and service stopped)
Tried two different NICs one Bcm 1000, one Rtl 100
MTU Settings: 1500
All available "offload" settings in Drivers Advanced page: ON
OS "offload" settings: turned On but not active according to netstat.

Wireshark showed packets going from around 76 bytes to 91 bytes and then the NetInstall fails without the packet size going up.

p.s. wait a second, you don't think the npf/winpcap could have caused this ..?

p.s. it could be because I tried to turn on chimney offload, I can test at some point when I want to donate the time ..

Now that the 6rc1 is clean installed the whole router seems more stable - only my ISP1 juniper does not appear easily in the arp table so I had to add it manually... (DHCP ...)

Re: RouterOS v6 release candidate 1 - SIMPLE QUEUES

Thu Oct 04, 2012 2:12 am

Hi All,

Reading scrollback I see others also have issues with simple queues and time ranges. I can confirm that I HAVE checked my clock settings and there really IS an issue with simple queues and time ;-)

There's 2 issues that occur (one Mikrotik needs to fix ;-):

Issue that needs fixing 1st:
I have Clock configured for Time Zone Name: Africa/Johannesburg. This means +02:00. Lets say I want a queue to start at 01:08:00 in the morning. To get it to activate at the right time I must set the time on the queue to 23:08:00. This seems to indicate Mikrotik are comparing UTC with Queue time and forgetting the Offset.

2nd issue - I can live with:
What appears to happen is that the queue stays invalid for around 20 - 30 seconds "after" the time indicated on the queue start time ... so when we're testing it appears broken... I thought so too and was busy typing up my post to add to the chorus of complaints when I noticed it DOES become valid ... it just takes its sweet time...

Other queue related issues:
*) Cannot rename a queue. Create queue called "queue1" try to edit name and always end up with error "already have such name"

I see - demo is 6.0RC2.
MT team, can you give us some pre-release changelog?
I would like to help with testing but we need to know what has changed?

Do you think it's possible?

I would like to help with testing but we need to know what has changed?

Do you think it's possible?
Do you have access to pre-release testing page? if not, email support with your account name. Changelog is also there.

I have about 50 Mikrotik's with over 100 queues, that I would upgrade. Can't Mikrotik just fix the simple queue issue? Simple queue management is taking up 70% CPU on some of my Mikrotiks now, REALLY would be nice to test out 6.0!!

http://www.mikrotik.com/download/share/ ... 6.0rc2.npk do not use this version as if something breaks there would be the person who installed it to blame. Its not released at all.

unpredicted behaviour report: with arp disabled and a static arp entry in place, dhcp client does not work properly because the static arp entry is red, invalid ?

cool new thing I like: traffic generator

cool new thing 2: Starting from v6.0rc2 default connection-tracking value is auto. Which means that connection tracking is disabled until at least one firewall rule is added.

problem: my mouse is set to high speed and when I doubleclick on the simple queue - log says it was moved and the queue stops working every time it gets moved. even though it is moved to the same place it was - only queue in there.

Can we please make WinBox not Move stuff when doubleclicked and the queue not stop working when "moved" to the same place?

Thanks.

NetInstall works fine on Windows 8! You just need to do the same troubleshooting that you would do for Windows 7.

It works fine for me. See screenshot. No compatibility mode, nothing special. Just double-click on it. The first time it runs, the firewall option pops up. Just tell it to allow communication on the private AND public network.

That's it. If it doesn't work, then either you have a Virtual Box adapter installed... or your firewall isn't set properly... or your computer IP address is wrong... or the net booting in NetInstall isn't enabled or set to the right IP address.

SCREENSHOT BELOW.

Sorry, wrong picture was attached. See the following picture to see the successful NetInstall AFTER it installed to the device:

just to check - have you set "net booting" ip address that netinstalled system will get to install over network?

Yes I did do that. That part worked. It was the later step that failed when I click Install.

I have a VMware thing installed.
I do't use VMWare, but when I have a Virtual Box network adapter... it won't even detect routers with the Winbox Login Dropdown. Delete the Virtual Box adapter, and all works fine.

You might try deleting the VMWare network adapter and make sure it isn't selected within the physical adapter's properties as well.

if router is already found by netinstall and only fail when install is pressed - bight be problem with windows firewall not passing tftp data through when packets are transferred to router.

please redownload the RouterOs v6.0rc2 - we made a new build. If in that version the wireless still uses 100% please make a support output file and send that to support@mikrotik.com

Now looks good :D

if AP ROS6.02rc2 - CPE ROS 6.0rc1 and wireles protocol NV2, PtMP - constantly disconnects
if AP ROS6.02rc2 - CPE ROS 6.0cr2 and wireles protocol NV2, PtMP - works better but still :

I need of CoA on PPPoE! This is the right solution to manage PPPoE users than SSH.

maybe i'm wrong but i think if we want a powerful multicore system with ROS6 we will have to wait for Cloud Core Router...

we have to forget about x86 systems

i tried ros5 with several multicore systems (amd and intel) and i have problems with all of them. ros6 i could never make it work with x86.
I run ros v5.20 on intel dn2800mt, it works like a charm....with intel pci-express network card....

there was no problem with v5.20 .....
this rx drops only appeard in the 6.0rc1.......
Same problem with me. I Already sended a supout.rif file to support.mikrotik.com. That's is the answer.
Hello,

I did not find any specific problem but we are working to fix some x86 ethernet
controller issues in version 6. Currently, you should downgrade back to v5.xx

Is usb sharing working?
I'm sorry to say that final version of RouterOS v6 will not include this feature, as the drivers we tried to use, did not meet our quality standards, and it is a bit too late to write our own implementation from scratch.
Hi!

Any chance this feature will be available?
