Hardware recomendation for head end

Tue Mar 21, 2006 2:27 pm

Hi,
I need a hardware recomendation for our head end. We will be processing traffic from 32 Class C subnets, although not all of them will be in use. Some Class C's are used just for a 2 radio backhaul, but some are used to service 60 customers or slightly more.

Each Class C will have a simple queue to enforce the max limit of our 802.11b access points, a p2p-all rule that will severely limit file swappers, and one of the fairness queueing techniques (haven't figured out which one yet) to enforce fair sharing of the bandwidth available.

It also bears mentioning that I will not be using any routing of any kind and no firewalling, as that is handled by an upstream Cisco PIX 525. The Mikrotik will only be a transparent bridge.

Thanks,
Eric

Put whatever you can find, If CPU etc is too high or speed is too low, upgrade/change it. A 1GHz + CPU is a good start. Intel NICs too. (As some have recommended these here on the forum, not tried myself...)

Can't Upgrade

Tue Mar 21, 2006 5:20 pm

My boss requires us to have the correct level of hardware to start out with, even if we have to spend more to get it, rather than upgrade right away.

Can someone else give me a difinitive answer please?

Eric

Hi,

For my latest test with IPSec traffic, I have used a machine with Intel Celeron 2.53 CPU, 256 MB of RAM, and 128 MB flash disk (not HDD), and I was able to have 20 Mbit download and 20 Mbit upload of 3DES encrypted traffic, so I think that this configuration will suit well for any kind of traffic, also to you.

Regards.

Faton
