Sierra Wireless AirCard 320U - LTE mode

Tue Oct 29, 2013 6:10 am

Hi,

I have RB951Ui-2HnD with RouterOS 6.0rc14.

It says on the hardware page that this card is supported for LTE as per below:

"Sierra Wireless AirCard 320U [95] v6.0
Vendor/product id pair should be 0x0f3d/0x68AA and DirectIP firmware loaded on the modem"

I can't get mine to work in LTE mode, so I assume it has something to do with "DirectIP firmware loaded on the modem", but I can't for the life of me work out what this means in the context of this card and a routerboard. I've been to the Sierra site that talks about directIP and from what I can gather directIP is a driver that is loaded on to linux. There is no mention anyway (that I have found) in regards to an firmware update or directIP firmware version specifically to load on to the aircard itself.

So my question is, what exactly is meant by "and DirectIP firmware loaded on the modem", how do I check and how do I load it if it needs to be? I assume someone has had this card working on a routerboard otherwise it wouldn't be listed.

I have the modem working in PPP mode, but I would much prefer to use LTE. It would make bonding easier and just life in general.

Many thanks in advance
Paul

here are some firmware downloads for the Direct IP mode, but we can't guarrany that they will work:
http://downloadcenter.netgear.com/en/pr ... Telstra$29

Try to use that AC320U_Telstra-X03.05.23.09 firmware and maybe it will work fine.

So my question is, what exactly is meant by "and DirectIP firmware loaded on the modem",
I have wondered the same thing too. I don't know who updated the hardware support list, but I would like to know how they got the DirectIP method to work.
Netgear don't have release notes for the firmware upgrade.

It does work on Windows PCs with DirectIP so unless Windows has the DirectIP drivers it needs.

thanks uldis,

haven't had a chance to try it yet, but will report back as soon as I do. I didn't even realise it was netgear, I searched high and low. Obviously not high and low enough hahaha

Thanks again

OK so it's a bit further along. The device is now detected as an lte device and lte interface is present. But it's not working.

It's getting stuck on:

lte0: sent AT+CPIN?
lte0: rcvd ERROR

Which would indicate some sort of sim issue. Interestingly when I plugged it in to my laptop and used the telstra application to connect it came back with "account needs to be activated". Tried to activate it and didn't work. Rang telstra they said, you need to go in to diag mode in the app and set the device type to TMB (see screenshot). It is set to pre-paid by default and this is a business account. So I'm just wondering if this has something to do with stopping it at the command above.

I've got full logs from the telstra app below in case its useful for anyone who knows anything about AT commands and can see what might be causing the problem.

first up is the log from connecting with pre-paid mode (ie getting the need to activate issue). Below that is the connection in TMB mode.

any assistance is greatly appreciated

in your windows logs the modem answers to the CPIN so not sure why it doesn't respond in the RouterOS.

Try sending a support file to MK and they'll probably want remote access to the router to have a look.

Sorry I haven't bothered to follow it up. Was too hard at the time and had a lot of other things on list with higher priority.

Re: Sierra Wireless AirCard 320U - LTE mode

Hi All,

I realise that this thread is a bit old but its right on topic. I'm not sure how to action this, but I believe that this person has identified a potential cause for the LTE mode being inoperable for the Sierra 320U:

http://whrl.pl/RdrGwn

It seems that the 320U does not support the "AT+CPIN?" command arriving on its data port when operating in Direct IP mode. This is the command that appears in the RouterOS logs when the device is in LTE mode, so perhaps RouterOS is simply not switching channels when the device is in LTE mode?

Happy to provide a test case.

Thanks,
Dave

I came to the same conclusion (LTE Not Supported) and just settled for PPP mode instead.

Happy to hear specifics if anyone has got it going in LTE mode

John on Whirlpool is somewhat of a modem expert! I can't see it taking MikroTik long to test this...

@MikroTik: don't suppose you would like to test this out?

Thanks MikroTik, with 6.28 DirectIP now works with the Sierra Wireless 320U.

Slight issue though: you get 50% less speed than PPP.

Hey There,

I'm struggling incredibly hard to actually get this to work.
How did you manage to get direct IP functionality working with the 320u?
I'm using firmware 6.29rc9

Cheers!

We spent quite a bit of time working with Mikrotik to get this fixed for 6.28

We don't see the 50% reduction in pperformance in lte mode though....

it is important to have up to date firmware on the 320U
this can be updated with the windows utility.

I just downloaded 6.28 and then made sure the router firmware was up to date. That was it. Once it connected, I added a DHCP client to the LTE interface and away I went.

I'll test again on the weekend. The firmware in the modem is up to date. There is another thing too, the LTE interface writes to the log every 2 seconds.

Did another test and it's all working fine now. Not sure what the problem was.

Hello, everyone!

We are planning to buy a Sierra Wireless AirCard 320U LTE modem in order to be able to get Public IP on the Mikrotik.
Also it may be usefully to use it in LTE Passthrough mode.

As we read on this thread, this may be done but some questions remain:
1. May we buy it on Ebay without any issue?
2. Where may we get latest version of firmware in order to get it working with Mikrotik in Direct IP mode?
3. This modem is not listed in the wiki page: https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Supporte ... and_modems
4. This modem is not listed in the wiki page: https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Peripherals
5. May we get it working in LTE Passtrough mode?

Thank you!

Reply from Mikrotik support:
3. This modem is not listed in the wiki page: https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Supporte ... and_modems
4. This modem is not listed in the wiki page: https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Peripherals
the modem might work in the RouterOS
5. May we get it working in LTE Passtrough mode?
Sierra drivers doesn't support passthrough option.
