rb2011uas-2hnd-in crashed with ROS 6.6 and FW 3.10

Sun Nov 17, 2013 1:23 pm

Hi,

yesterday I upgraded my rb2011uas-2hnd-in to ROS 6.6 and firmware 3.10. This seems as it was a pretty bad idea.

Unfortunately, a few hours later it went into an endless loop of rebooting every minute or so. I don't see any error messages, it just tries to start services and then it reboots all over again. I can even log in for a few seconds, when I am fast enough.

Moreover, I can not NetInstall the device back to an older version. My Windows 7 gets to bootp the device but when I then click on "Install" nothing happens - it just returns to "Ready" a few seconds later.

Is there a way to rescue the device or do I have to send it back to the retailer? It's still under warranty so I expect a quick response there.

Any ideas?

As I wrote, I can't get NetInstall to work - the "Install" button does not do anything. :?
RouterBOOT booter 3.10

RouterBoard 2011UAS-2HnD

CPU frequency: 600 MHz
 Memory speed: 225 MHz
  Memory size: 128 MiB
    NAND size: 128 MiB

Press any key within 2 seconds to enter setup..
trying bootp protocol... OK
Got IP address: 192.168.xx.xx
resolved mac address 8C:89:xx:xx:xx:xx
transfer started ........................... transfer ok, time=3.27s
setting up elf image... OK
jumping to kernel code
Welcome to MikroTik Router Software remote installation
Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to abort

mac-address: D4:xx:xx:xx:xx:D0
... 8times ...

software-id: Z68S-HLNA key:
<long key>

Waiting for installation server...
And from there on I can't get any further. Whatever I do, nothing happens.

Forgot to mention: I see broadcasts from my PC going out (in wireshark) but the router seems not to be interested.

Only got the install to work once myself. But that's the only way to fix the boot loop problem. Maybe someone else can offer something more

I run a few more experiments and if I put a switch between RB and the NetInstall server and another client as well, the other client sees broadcast messages on the wire, shouting for the router to update:

src 0.0.0.0 port 5000 to dst 255.255.255.255 port 5000 (udp).

Obviously, the router does not consider itself as the target of those broadcasts.

Your booting the device into netboot mode right?

Yes, of course. Boot mode is bootp and the loader works as expected as you can see in the dump above.

Have you tried to add a static mac adress of the router on the bootp server.
To help the arp ??
That helped me a lot then a tried to upgrade another router.

On windows:
For example, to add a static ARP entry for a local TCP/IP node with an IP address of 10.0.0.200 that resolves to a media access control address of 00-10-54-CA-E1-40, type the following at a command prompt:

arp -s 10.0.0.200 00-10-54-CA-E1-40

Thanks patrikg, I tried this already but I think this only helps for bootp problems and that part works fine for me. The netboot reliably works, just the later on happening broadcasts seem to be ignored by the booted kernel.

What netinstall version you tried when installing?
Maybe you could try to use an older netinstall from v6.5 maybe?
Does your netinstall work with other routerboard or you don't have any other board to test with?

I tried NetInstall 6.4 and 6.6 and both didn't work. I do have a RB951G-2HND but I didn't dare to touch it so far. I will give it a try and see what it does.

I just tried the RB951G without any difference. It shows up in NetInstall with status "Ready". When I klick "Install", the status changes to "Installing" and the status line shows "Sending offer...".
After a few seconds all turns back to "Ready" and I can click the install button again.

same problem here..... And there are more users with reboot - loop problem.

Let it be for 4-5 hours and then you will able acces the board, then make downgrade to 5.25

I experienced reboots every few minutes after upgrading my RB2011UAS-2HnD to RouterOS v6.5 and firmware v3.10. Since I mainly use the device for testing I didn't bother to look into it anymore and just left it off for a few weeks.

Once RouterOS v6.6 was released I powered up the RB2011UAS-2HnD again and managed to upload RouterOS v6.6 and re-upgrade the firmware before it rebooted again. I'm not sure if it was v6.6 or the extra firmware upgrade that did the trick, but it's been stable since that. No more reboots. So going to v6.6 and upgrading the firmware after that might help, even if you've got the v3.10 firmware from RouterOS v6.5. Worth a shot if your RB stays on long enough to upload the file.

I did not have 6.5 installed on it before. I went from 6.4/3.08 to 6.6/3.10.

Right now I let it loop for a few hours and see if it changes or delays the loop after a while and I get access again.

I did not get any further with NetInstall since the router does not respond to the broadcast messages when I try to install the packages.

This is the worst router experience I ever had with any device since the emergency procedures do not work at all and the device is just unusable for many days.

I tried that 5.23-fixed version but it behaves almost identically, except that the status does not return to "ready" automatically and I have to click to on the router name again for the next try.

The installation does not continue though - it is stuck at "Waiting for installation server..." and I can not restore the router.

I also tried to install it from a Windows XP VM (using virtual box) but I can not get that to work correctly. The router boots from NetInstall, but the software does not see the router in the selection window and I can not continue there. :(

So there is no way to get this piece of crap to netinstall in any way. I tried it from Win7, WinXP, with 5 different versions of netinstall and nothing works. I only get it to "Waiting for installation server" and that's it.
I spent arount a whole day to recover the device without any success - I think I'll send the "§$§!?@"§ back and look for another hardware vendor.

Which ip address do you configure in your laptop and in netinstall configuration?

I tried several netmasks and used addresses from the 192.168.0.0/16 and 10.0.0.0/8 ranges.

I run most tries with 192.168.179.158 (PC) and 192.168.179.55 (RB).

I don't think that it has something to do with the addresses since the first step to boot the kernel works fine. Just the data transfer later on keeps failing (not starting at all).

I tried your version with direct link and via a switch. The result was the same in both cases.

Ok, I finally got over the NetInstall problem. I used one of my very old Laptops with a very outdated Windows 7 on it and there NetInstall 6.4 did run as expected and I finally was able to restore the router.

It seems that it is pure luck if one is able to restore the router...
