How to guarantee remote Winbox access?

Mon Mar 03, 2014 3:14 pm

This is the situation:

I have several Vsat connections in rural locations with MikroTik boxes setting after the Vsat modem. I do not know if it is a problem from the Vsat provider or if it is an over utilization issue, but i have found remote management of the MikroTik box via Winbox to be very difficult and unstable.

Is it possible to create a queue which will allow allow users to utilize all available bandwidth, and when Winbox remotely makes a connection, the queue opens a slice of dedicated space for the Winbox connection, thus guaranteeing remote winbox access?

Thanks in advance,

Blake

In my experience, the latency is the problem.

I have remote control over "Tooway" to 2 different site.
Manageable, but really slowly...
Is not a bandwidth problem, in my case.

Yes, i have experienced the joys of winbox and latency! Unfortunately, it seems, in this case, that the problem is there are simply too many people utilizing the Vsat connection.

Has anyone had success using a queue to guarantee remote Winbox access? Any other ideas how to do it?

Thanks in advance

I also have several network locations that I use cable, DSL and VSAT, over the last couple of years I have found that in order to connect from OUTSIDE the network, I have had to due the following.

Access is only dependent on how YOU set up the system.

1) Contact your service provider, and have them give you a static IP.
2) On the provider modum, make the following changes:
A) Set it to bridge mode.
B) Go to port forwarding and forward the following ports,
443, 80, 1723, 8281.

On YOUR computer, set up a VPN connection to the IP from your provider.

Once all that is done, when you wish to connect to your system, connect thru the VPN and then open Winbox.

You should now be able to do what you wish.

This will allow YOU and only those people you allow to get into the router or other devices.

You do not need to setup any queues in the router.

This also does not have any thing to due with how many users are on the system.
