RB912UAG-2HPnD and Sierra Wireless MC8780

Tue Mar 11, 2014 3:53 pm

Hi,

Got a problem with the RB912UAG-2HPnD boards, Sierra Wireless MC8780 cards and ROS 6.x.

Under ROS 6.10, every now and again, I can bring up a ppp-client interface on the MC8780, but most of the time all I get is:
ppp-out1: resetting link... - could not acquire serial port
The port itself is showing as invalid:
[admin@MikroTik] > /port print
Flags: I - inactive
 # DEVICE NAME CHANNELS USED-BY BAUD-RATE
 0 I 1:2 usb1 3 9600
and there doesn't seem to be any way of resolving this - doing a
/system reset-configuration
sometimes cures it, but other times the port just shows as invalid after a reboot.

I have twelve RB912s and 12 MC8780 cards and they are all giving this error. The boards all work perfectly with Huawei EM770W cards.

Everything works perfectly under ROS 5.26 (but of course, I don't have access to the functionality I require)

If somebody can help get these working under 6.10, I would be very grateful.

I have one board it runs fine on, but another doesn't. Disabling wireless does seem to cure the problem though. Is this a known error? Can I not run the MC8780 and WiFi at the same time?

Right. Having done some testing....

MC8780 with ROS 6.10 - Doesn't work at all. Attempting to create a supout file while the port is marked as invalid fails and the board reboots.
MC8780 with ROS 5.26 - Occasionally works with WiFi enabled, but when it stops working, it never starts again, even after a reboot.
MC8780 with ROS 5.26 - Works flawlessly with WiFi disabled.

So, there appears to be a problem with MC8780 cards on RB912 boards. Please could somebody update the compatibility wiki (http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Supported ... e#3G_cards) with this information.

I shipped 12 units out to my customer yesterday running 5.26 and with wireless disabled. This will do for the moment - I can stall the customer on the promise of a firmware update, but I do need to get this fixed - the end user requires 50 units a month for the next two years (if everything goes to plan) and these ones must have wireless.

OK. I have definitely confirmed that despite the compatibility page on the wiki (http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Supported_Hardware) stating that the card works, the MC8780 DOES NOT WORK on RB912 boards as follows:
  • ROS 5.x - Works if wireless is disabled.
    ROS 6.x - Won't work at all.
I requested that Mikrotik update the wiki some time ago, but this has not been done.
