RouterOS v6.x with Ubiquiti AirFiber 24 v2.0 - RX Error FCS

Tue Apr 29, 2014 7:01 am

Have an AF 24 link running v2.0 firmware. Root end terminated at a CCR1016-12G on RouterOS v6.12. Remote end terminated at a RB1200 on RouterOS v6.7. Using stock PoE injectors. UBNT ToughCable all within distance spec. Grounded.

Since going to AF 24 v2.0 I'm seeing ridiculously high Rx FCS ERRORs and Rx CODE ERRORs on the interfaces of each router.

OSPF randomly drops out on the link and lately some customers have been complaining about intermittent connectivity. Not sure if this is related or not.

Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks,
Scott

If this was a result after only updating the Ubiquiti equipment, I would be contacting Ubiquiti support as it is possible they have introduced a problem.

OK, slightly updated information to share.

First of all, the CCR on v6.12 is logging hundreds of "fcs error on link" events. About one per minute.

The problem started on 4/24/14 when I upgraded the CCR from v6.7 to v6.12. To be exact, it started at 11:22 exactly one minute after I upgraded the router OS and router firmware.

We did the AirFiber 24 v2.0 upgrade on 4/15/14 and ran without any of these errors on RouterOS v6.7

I am only seeing these errors logged on the interface which the AirFiber is on.

We are seeing the exact same thing, with the AF24/CCR
but also with some older Trango licensed gear, and the CCR.

It's not exclusive to the AF24, is what I'm trying to say.. The CCR is the common denominator.

Just out of curiosity what does speed and duplex look like on each side? High FCS errors most often are caused by duplex mismatch. If it was due to a code upgrade, maybe the autoneg algorithm broke?

@IPANetEngineer

The speed and duplex is matched at both ends using autonegotiation. I double checked to make sure the radios and the router interfaces are all 1000/FULL - and they are. There are no speed/duplex issues.

I downgraded both AirFibers to 1.5.

I continue to see one "FCS ERROR" per minute in the log of both routers.

@joregoldman

No, this was not a result of updating the UBNT gear. I should have made it clearer in my first post that the upgrade to v2.0 of each AirFiber occurred a few weeks before the router at the root end (the CCR) was updated from v6.7 to v6.12.

When the CCR was on v6.7 and the AirFibrs on v2.0, this issue was non-existent. It started with an upgrade to RouterOS v6.12

Thanks,
Scott

Hello,

Starting from ROS 6.11 there are changes related ethernet:

*) ethernet - added option to enable rx/tx flow control
(will be disabled by default);
*) ethernet - added ability to specify advertised modes for copper ports;

Maybe the CCR-s have some eth buffering problems? What about enabling flow control ?

Also check that you are using the latest bios on your CCR!!!

@sasskass

I am aware of the changes to ethernet.

I am running firmware v3.13 as of the day I upgraded the CCR to v6.12

I have enabled flow control on both the AirFibers and on the CCR. Doesn't seem to help.

Thanks,
Scott

We are seeing the exact same thing. v6.12 and AF v2.0. Happening on both an internal ethernet port and
on an sfp port with a Planet ethernet SFP. Tried it with flow control disabled and enabled on both devices
with the same result.

The same here and this is certainly an ccr issue because we have one 1100ahx2 on the other end and no fcr errors.

Same issue with here but with a Titanium Rocket M5 plugged direct into ethernet port on CCR.
Getting FCS errors every so often - seems pretty random.

Not service affecting at the moment as far as we can tell but it is a little annoying.
No ethernet negotiation issues - 1Gbps-Full at both ends.

I might try upgrade to 6.13 but will have to be during the night.

@colinhowlin

Let me know what RouterOS v6.13 does for you. Also, if it has a new firmware upgrade in it too.

We get the FCS errors logged one a minute, both ends of the link.

CCR at root. RB1200 at remote.

Never saw these ever before until I upgraded the CCR to v6.12

I put a ubnt tough switch inbetween my tik and air fibre.
No more fcs errors on tik, but the tough switch reports rx errors on the port connected to the air fibre.

This is clearly an air fibre problem.
Have seen this on approx. 80% of all air fibre deployed.

My place: 3xAF24 v1.5 connected to CCR1016-12G running ROS 6.4. no FCS errors on every interface.
CCR is doing pppoe, bgp, queues pushing up to 400-450 mbps through these af24 links.

@tgrand

Interesting, but as @marcin21 points out, he has no problems with CCR on RouterOS v6.5.

My scenario is very similar to his, I was also pushing 400-450mbps and no FCS Errors while on RouterOS v6.7

My problem started after the upgrade to v6.12

I will be downgrading next Monday and will post results.

Sow how does it look after downgrade? Is it firmware related problem ?
Because I'm hesitating to upgrade AF to 2.x as it gives significant improvments.

RouterOS downgrade did not fix it.

I put a managed switch in between the AF 24 and the CCR. As stated by someone above, the switch begins to log errors on the port connected to the AF 24 and the issue is eliminated from the router.

I went back to UBNT support on this and am awaiting a reply.

This is basically not a Mikrotik issue or RouterOS issue as far as I'm concerned. I'm baffled as to why the upgrade to the CCR started the problem in the first place, but the truth is in the pudding once I installed that switch.

I'll update this thread when I have more info.

Hi everybody, I'm currently having same issue here, FCS errors on RB750GL (on 6.15) port
with UBNT NS5 Loco (latest firmware and RF Armor shields) connected.
NS5 Loco is powered by PoE injector.

What I did so far without success:
- replaced cable (tough cable) connectors
- replaced cable by certified Cat.6
- replaced RB750GL (also on 6.15)

I'm about to replace NS5Loco now and see...

By reading "other RF equipment", would you count LNB from satellite dish as well?
I've mounted NS5Loco right on the same pole above the dish.
Could this be a possible source of the FCS errors caused by RF interference of LNB?

Interesting thing is: I have another shielded NS5Loco on same RB750GL other port, wired and powered same way.
No FCS errors at all. NS5Loco is "looking" in other direction behind dish.
Additionally a SXT is connected and powered same way, looking other direction - also no errors at all.

What do you think? Could LNB cause FCS errors?

Maybe yes? As what I've found by myself: http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=68676
It feels like that because FCS errors aren't occuring all the time; it depends on what the current LNB oscillator's frequency is/what program the subscriber is watching?

Ok, finally it's a faulty UBNT device.
Replicating the symptoms in lab environment: as long as the device is powered up for some minutes and cool yet - no issues @ 100Mbps FDX. But when stressed and getting warm: FCS errors, align errors, fragments, lost link.
Then negotiating down to 10Mbps FDX and still errors, lost link.
So it's neither RB750GL nor firmware 6.15

As I stated earlier in the post - the issue is not related to Mikrotik. The original symptoms had me dead set that it was a CCR issue but after working through days of troubleshooting with UBNT and on my own, I have narrowed it down to the UBNT device - an AF24 in my case.

UBNT has been working on this problem with me since the date of the first post on this thread. No resolutions.

If/when I ever get a solution, I will update this thread just for the sole purpose of closure.

FINAL POST

The response that I got after weeks of troubleshooting, swapping radios, re-cabling, etc...
I suggest to fill up an RMA for the device. You can check with your local reseller/distributor if they can help you with the RMA of the device.
This response comes after they clearly knew I had swapped the device out twice. Both times with brand new equipment. And, new cabling.

So, to everyone out there continuing to have this issue, I don't know what to say. The problem is NOT with Mikrotik's gear. You need to turn your attention to support@ubnt.com and start hammering them with this issue.

With new Air Fiber install, do you still have FCS error or any other ethernet problem ?

Any news regarding this? Is this due to faulty AF24? I have a PTP with one end hooked to a CCR1016 (6.19), no problems. Whereas the other end, hooked to a CCR1036 (6.19 also) is spitting out FCS errors continuously.

No, no news. No fix.

The issue is prevalent on CCR1016 and CCR1036 at my end. In an OSPF ring consisting of 2x 1016's and 1x 1036, they all log FCS errors on the ports in which the AF24's are attached.

Furthermore, one of those aforementioned 1016's has an AF5 link to a RB1100. While the 1016 logs FCS errors on the AF24 port, it does not on the AF5 port. The RB1100 has no FCS errors.

Quite some time ago I put a switch between the CCR's and AF24's and successfully logged FCS errors at the switches instead.

Thanks for your reply Scott.

I am puzzled, how come one CCR has FCS errors whereas the other doesn't?

Those aren't the first AirFibers I'm working with, on other setups I remember having one hooked to a CCR1016 with 6.17, no FCS Rx errors...

So you are working with those AF24 even with the FCS errors?

Re: RouterOS v6.x with Ubiquiti AirFiber 24 v2.0 - RX Error FCS

Yeah, they are in production. I don't have a choice really, as they are two main "arteries" back to my core router in locations where we need large available bandwidth. We are talking about doing some licensed links which would push one of these AF24 links into a higher path cost and become a backup only.

I do not know what sort of affect these FCS errors are having on performance. I mean at the end of the day these links do what they are supposed to do: They move 100's of mbps without a hitch and rarely fail unless it's raining severely.

But, those FCS errors are there and I see them every day when I login to my routers... it drives me nuts.

@pukkita, are you not deploying AF24 because of the FCS errors? Have you found proof of negative impact?

No, I have them already deployed, and in production, I "caught" the FCS errors tracking some OSPF "oddities".

As you these are one of the main downlink backbone, seeing that amount of Rx FCS errors send chills down my spine.

Do a dmesg on the units show anything?

On the "faulty" unit I'm seeing:
[280230.560000] FATAL ERROR lastlength = 78
[280230.560000] FATAL ERROR lasthead = 0x95f, lasttail = 0x95e

ifconfig doesn't show any errors but no counters also because we're using VLANs, are you?

Not seeing any errors in the dmesg on any of the AF24 radios. 'ifconfig' is clean too.

I use VLANs at the site routers, but on other interfaces where customer networks are configured. I do not have any tagged VLAN traffic leaving any of my routers. No VLANs on the interfaces where the AF24's are patched.

UPDATE

Yesterday we installed a brand new AF5 link. Included new cabling (UBNT ToughCable) and UBNT end connectors.

The end at a CCR1036 is logging FCS Errors.

The end at a RB1100 AHX2 is not logging FCS Errors.

So the common denominator here is CCR. But, if you put a switch between the radio and the router, the FCS Errors start logging at the switch instead. So... I'm still at a loss.

In our case it was either the POE brick or the Data cable, once both were swapped last night not a single FCS Rx error (crossing fingers)

I'd test a RB1100 at the Rx FCS errors end... and a CCR at the not having issues end for a comprehensive ruling out...

Same situation here,

I had enabled Tx and RX Flow control at the CCR, no RX FCS errors so far, few hours ... will see how it goes AF24 using version 2.0, CCR using version 6.24

Some months ago I had same issue in routerOS6 whith Airfiber 5U.

Solved by adjusting TX power on the wireless tab to something under the max tx power, in my case I set it to 43 db from 47db.

I know.... what has wireless power to do with ethernet FCS errors? I don´t know, it just solved the problemm.

Only two or three FCS error logs a week...

Hope it helps

As Diego said, i feel like the issue might be related to the radio part...
I have some AF24 deployed and only one is having a lot of issues with FCS errors.
This link is the only link which doesn't have a free fresnel path along the way.. Nothing to worry about but the signal received is sightly lower than the one we might expect for a 1km link. A building on the fresnel path.
Ubiquiti says it's impossible... i dont know what to do... i changed everything, PSU, cabling, even routers and added a dumb switch in between without success.

@diegodriguez

Thanks for the suggestion. I thought you were on to something because I made these changes on one AF5 and one AF24 link and my FCS errors stopped. But only for seven minutes and then went back to the 1 minute intervals!!

So, back to square one.

Do you have "late collisions" too ?

I have many FCS errors on a 10G SPF+ port on 1009 CCR... no wireless involved - just straight fiber to Cox. Going to try placing the switch in the middle to see if they move to the switch port.

If there are no (late) collisions we can probably exclude duplex mismatch and related stuff (maybe worth a double check anyway), so the most likely causes can be (copy/paste):
FCS or File Check Sequence Errors, are one of the more common errors found in a network. When packets are transmitted and received, each contains a File Check Sequence that allows the receiving device to determine if the packet is complete without having to examine each bit. This is a type of CRC, or Cyclical Redundancy Check. Barring a station powering up or down during a transmission, the most common cause of these errors is noise. Network noise can be caused by cabling being located too close to noise sources such as lights, heavy machinery, etc. If a cabling installation is particularly faulty -- such as pairs being untwisted, improper terminations, field terminated patch cables, etc. -- these errors will occur on your network. Poorly manufactured components or minimally compliant components that are improperly installed can compound this issue. Cabling segments that are too long can also cause these errors.
I recently experienced fcs errors on MT_912/UBNT_AirGridM5 connection but it was a duplex mismatch; in that case it had been impossible to fix without manually setting half duplex on each side. There where no chance to leave them auto negotiate ( mt fullduplex and ubnt half).

How many hours you have running with success?
RouterOS version?
Firmware version?
Hardware type?

Thanks for sharing

I had the same problem yestarday after upgrading my router from a 1100AH to a CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+. The 1100 never had this issue, but the CCR did immediately. Both routers were running 6.30.2. Changing flow control to auto on the MT fixed the issue for me.

I'm curious, is it plugged into a switched port or cpu port?

what happens if you plug into port 5~9? 1 through 4 are on a switch chip, while 5 though 9 are directly attached to the CPU.

Setting flow control to "auto" on the CCR is not helping.

To those of you who were successful with this, are you also enabling flow control in the AF?

Hi all,

one thing that saved my life and is running for months now without any FCS errors is the following (RB750 had this issue with NanoStationsM5):

Before:
ports (except customer port) bridged and linked to another bridge (with customer port) via vlan --> port where UBNT gear was operated: lots of FCS errors

After:
ports (except customer port) switched and the second bridge (with customer port) linked to master port via vlan --> same desired network-design, but no more FCS errors!

Best thing is: it was reproducible and solvable on all network nodes having this issue = happy customers!

all other settings like Flow Control, Auto Neg. etc. were absolutely useless...

Hope this helped

We had experiment those kind of issue with CCR and RB1100AHx2 few month ago, and then decide to put it on test in lab.

Setup two airfiber with radio at very low power cause distance is about 20 meters in our warehouse.
No FCS error at all for about two hours transmitting at 500/500 Mbps using BTest UDP.

Then it started: a lot of FCS error with some variation in the latency.
We found that a coworker as gone between the RF link of airfiber, few second ago.
We then started to manage test paying attention of the line of sight between airfiber.
We found that FCS error occured on ethernet port when a lot of RF retransmission occured.
I don't know if UBNT could confirm that's the way airfiber works...
Or is it normal behavior for layer3 wireless bridge to clone FCS error from wireless interface to ethernet port.

Hope it shine some light for those who still got the problem,

At this moment, didn't get an answer as we don't have much trouble with our airfiber link deployed, I had send them the question just few days ago.

I can confirm that I only see fcs errors on links with AF connected where the radio link is less that perfect.   What I want to know is what rate of FCS errors is acceptable before performance is degraded

I'm experiencing this also, CCR to air-fiber 24s. I came across the errors by 13 link downs in less than 3 days, led me here and ubnt threads... It is definitely load orientated. Got one AF24 and this shows FCS RX errors, the other one shows FCS RX errors but lots of link drops, yet no packet losses or FCS errors on TX side. One AF shows jabber and rx too short plus link downs. But its very random and spasmodic.

When it happens I'm seeing even pings fail about 25% sometimes 10% as high as 50% but their random losses.

Downstream netwatch some show downs others not, so I'm convinced this is random losses on higher loads over 200mb.

Put a switch inline between AF and CCR and this extinguished the errors almost completely. It would get 50000 in a day or so now not a single one in 10 hours.

Hope this helps others.

Cheers,

David

I have noticed AF24 wireless "backfire" into the ether ports under certain circumstances, inducing noise and causing the FCS errors. Check for nearby ferromagnetic obstacles...

I had problems with a RocketM5 connected to a port on a CCR-1036-12G-4S with RouterOs version 6.37.3. Change cable, POE, even install new RocketM5 without solving the problem. Reading the comments of this forum, I put certain things to the test and what worked for me was to set the Tx / Rx Flow Control options to Auto. I am using Google Translator in case it is not well understood.

I had the same problem of fcs error with both af24 and af5x, in the first case I fixed the LAN cable because it was a mistake between the lan interfaces, for af5x I solved by fixing the radio link because the pseudobridge created by ubiquity shows routeros both lan that wlan as the only interface and I could not understand after replacing cable, injector, router port because errors continued to exist

Hi!

Did you find a solution for that problem?
Today, I installed an AirFiber 24HD-link. The MT-device behind the link is a CCR1016 with software version 6.40.3 that shows: fcs error on link

I tried to use FlowControl without success. The warning-message occures once a minute (in average).

Edit: I just updated the CCR to 4.42.7 --> No Change

Thank you for your help!

I believe we resolved this problem by using dielectric grease on the Ethernet connection on the AF24HD radio side. I believe it is a similar problem to the one listed here:

@Stril - No, I did not. We still have several AF links in the network which clock FCS errors at the Mikrotik devices.

@mducharme - That article appears to be unrelated to what this topic is in regards to. The issue here is that we are logging 'fcs error on link' entries, not actual drops in ethernet connectivity. Can you confirm that you were experiencing the 'fcs' issue and the dielectric grease application fixed it?

We were experiencing the FCS issue with the AF24, yes. We were seeing approximately 100 FCS errors per second and throughput dropped to 20Mbps until we dropped the auto negotiate down to 100Mbps and then the FCS errors went away and throughput increased to 100Mbps (they only appeared when the MikroTik->AF24 link was at Gigabit). The cable length showed incorrectly on the problem side, <20 m when it was certainly more than that. Unfortunately it seems that the person who was supposed to document the ticket did not, so there is only my recollection of what was done. I believe we replaced the cable (we had used Ubiquiti ToughCable Carrier before but I think we switched to different cable for that, some kind of outdoor cat6) and used dielectric grease just in case, assuming the AF24 may have a similar problem to the AF5x. If my recollection is correct, this solved it and we were able to go up to 1Gbps.

I have been seen this same problem with a Ubnt PowerBeamM5-400 (essentially the same as the Rocket M5 as some other have reported above). It happens while connected to a hEX PoE as well as U's own Toughswitch and a few specfic chipsets of directly connected laptops during testing. The only solution was to turn off autonegotation on the hEX PoE and set both sides to 100/Full. Not likely a MT problem, but Ubnt's. Not what u want to hear on a gigabit device unfortunately.

Have seen this with AF11, AF24. Have replaced cables, units, to no avail. Just keep seeing the log file with FCS errors on every airfiber link from every side. Doesn't disconnect the link, but just a notice.
