usb drive performance

Wed Jul 16, 2014 7:07 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to setup simple file sharing (smb, ftp) solution using my RB951G-2HnD and 64GB usb 3.0 flash drive. The drive itself is fast - I've tested it with over 50MB/s write and 70MB/s read. Hovever, the speeds I observe with mikrotik are not very spectacular.

With smb and windows client I cannot get past 3.7MB/s when writing and 1.7MB/s when reading. When using built-in mikrotik ftp it's even worse - write speeds are heavily jumping, never exceeding 1MB/s. The read speed is again fixed at around 1.7MB/s.

I have also setup a small openwrt metarouter image with proftpd server (I need to lock users into some directory and haven't found any way to do this with built-in ftp). This metarouter is using smb to access usb drive and again, write speed is 1MB/s (without jumping) and 1.8MB when reading.

CPU usage is mostly at 100%.

My question is: am I doing something wrong or is it just the way the things are and the router just isn't capable of higher usb speeds ? :) There are other problems with smb under windows, but this is probably well known already.

Thanks :)

Well those numbers look pretty low, but this is a router, not an File sharing device so performance is always low... ;)

Router CPU`s arent optimized for such tasks, also probably RouerOS isnt either.
SMB & FTP are secondary functions on those devices mainly just for Logging and backup purposes and for easy access to fetch and replicate them.

I'm aware it's not dedicated file sharing device, that's why i'm using flash drive of relatively limited size. The data will be mostly static and writes few and far in between. Anyway, the read speeds are on the edge of unusable.

How do 3g usb modems perform if usb speeds are so limited?

They dont use SMB but different protocols and for those CPU isnt a bottleneck... ;)

Too bad that smb/ftp performance of mikrotik router make unusable file sharing because of slow and inconsistent throughput.Took almost 10 minutes to write a 300MB file to a RB450G router with a class4 8gb kingston micro-sd via samba. The transfer reaches 2.6MB peaks but with numerous gaps...Same behaviour on another RB951G-2HnD with usb stick. The situation is worse than other less performant router with usb support, which you don't have any expectations ,I presume some kind of bug on RouterOS...that maybe can be resolved in future releases.Fast file transfer should'nt be a problem for such powerful equipment like mikrotik, of course we don't expect NAS performance but decent speed ...let the usb/micro-sd be the bottleneck...

I have the same problem. Checked on version 6.28 rc17. Router RB951Ui-2HnD. Has anyone solved this problem?

I have the same issue.
Board Name RB951G-2HnD
Version 6.28
Upload speed ~ 3.5 - 5 MB/s (cpu load 100%, irq 45%)
Download speed of ~ 0.7 - 1.5 MB/s (cpu load 30-59%, irq 11%)
File system on disk 1.5TB ext3 (formatted with router)

usb drive on computer ~ 33 MB/s

Extremely old thread, but nevertheless my info.

Routerboard : RB3011UiAS-RM
Installed a Sandisk 64GB card in the unit (mainly for logging purposes etc, not really planning to make my Mikrotik a fileserver
Version 6.35.4 (stable)

SCP performance, when copy (either read/write) is consistantly about 9.5 / 10.5 Mbytes/sec (and no, not connected on 100Mbps port or something)

Then the CPU seems to be rather high (35% or so)

very bad sdcard permance :(
routerboard: RB750GR3
version:6.38 rc31

samsung evo+ tf card 32g, Fat32 file system
upload 300KB/s~1000KB/s
download 10MB/s
cpu load 0%~1%
IRQ 0%~1&%???

hope this problem be solved soon...

What nonsense.
why do they put USB in it at all. little chance and pointless to put something in it that only works for half or almost not at all and How many routers are there not that work with?

Guess, 3G/LTE dongles, serial communication, etc. Mikrotik produces routers, not NAS devices, after all, so SMB/FTP/etc functions are purely supplementary (firmware update, backup download/upload, hotspot customization, etc.).
