After reading routerOS manual, two questions about licensing of our RouterBOARD METAL devices:

1. Is there any limitation on using different PCs to run Winbox when upgrading routerOS? Is license bound to the hard drive of the PC running Winbox when routerOS is running on a RouterBOARD? (For example, if I upgrade the METAL to 6.x using Alan's PC, can I later upgrade it to 7.x using Bob's PC?

2. Our METALs are upgradable to v7.x. What happens when there is a newer OS - can we expect to be able to purchase a license for upgrading further in the future?

I do not know one single product that have licence stored on ANOTHER device than itself...

OBVIOUSLY licence is inside the RouterBoard, not on another place.

If the licence permit 7.x, when 8.x come out, usually your hardware probably are outdated, because version above require more power than before.

Level 3 and 4 permit one more upgrade from 6.x to 7.x (update and downgrade [if hardware supported on previous release] are always permitted) and 5 and 6 permit two version upgrade, from 6.x to 8.x

anyway its possible make an license upgrade?

for example to change level 3 (no ap support) to level 4?

usually it is more useful to purchase RouterBOARD product with the better license in the first place than to buy the product with lower license and then upgrade the license. So avoid as much as you can license upgrades for RouterBOARD devices.


next regarding upgradability, read this quote from wiki:

include 15-30 day free support over e-mail

are for one installation each
offer unlimited software upgrades

in my case its to circumvent supply problem of certain references on my country

anybody can confirm if its possible to upgrade sxt 2 lite from level 3 to level 4 buying license?

You can, but it is cheaper if you buy the version with level 4. Can't you order from a different country ?

im a freelancer offering implementation and consulting services in networking for small bussiness

i dont sell hardware because dont have the financial infrastructure to do that

i am exploring the alternatives because my clients (small bussiness) are reluctant to buy hardware online they need to buy the hardware locally to get a local invoice in local currency for taxes management etc.

then the license can be bougth online the clients dont have problem with that.

I know, form certain perspectives sounds stupid but i have to find the way to make things like my clients prefer.

yes its cheaper buy sxt 2 than sxt lite 2 + level 4 license but the difference is not huge
