New forum look & feel

Thu Nov 13, 2014 4:54 pm

Hi guys! New forum theme is nice.
Though, I have several comments/questions.
  1. About the new look of the list of topics. Topic captions are of the same font and almost the same color as the following line containing author and topic creation date, which makes looking through the list of topics more difficult then it is used to be. Please make topic captions brighter/more standing out.
  2. Where is the ROS code syntax highlighting gone?
  3. What happened to karma?
Also (not related to the new forum theme) since you've created a separate forum for announcements, can you please stop sticking topics like "6.22 released!" to multiple forums at once, because this makes some forum functions like links to the first unread post in a topic misbehave badly.

A. Fonts make forum long...it means too many pages to scroll...especially with wide screens.
B. Too light colors = "where is the light gray link on dark white background ?"
C. Real admins use keayboard on real computers, not tablets :-) so please make smaller icons.

Agree about all the above - I really dont like this too light and too bright color scheme.

Also:
1) "View unread posts" functionality is gone.
2) All "View x posts" buttons now require one more click. Before they were right at the top.
This is not much, but its an extra click, wait for manu to appear, click again every single time... just wasting time.
3) With this color scheme, everything seriously blends together...
4) The link between a post and a user's signature is too thin - not visible enough.
5) ADD KARMA BACK!

The "View unread posts" is not gone - it's at the "Forum" menu on top, renamed to "View new posts" ("unread" is implied).

I don't mind the color scheme, but the "big"-ness of the fonts and boxes is a little off putting indeed. I like Windows 8.1's start menu, but even I don't spend most of my time on it, so...

It is gone.
"View unread posts" and "View new posts" are 2 totally different functions.
"unread" is NOT implied, as "View new posts" shows posts already red.

Oh no, the plague got here too. :( Well, it sure does look modern, congratulations. Too bad "modern" these days means big, space-wasting, contrast-less, eye-burning, ... did I forget something? All in all, nothing positive.

Any chance you could offer an optional alternative look without all these shortcomings? Something like previous one?

+1 for View unread posts. It is the biggest problem for me right now.
Also as other mentioned all can be made smaller. Maybe an option to change font size or other visibility settings.

Please, go back to old fashion look style for phpbb forum, or at least enable the users to set the style individually. This "new" style is wasting the screen space that was used much more effectively before.
And is awful.

Not nice. Not at all nice.

My main bugbear is that posts take up too much space and it's difficult to see where one post ends and the next reply starts.

The spacing's all wrong. The horizontal line shows the break between posts where everything's all crammed together and the arrowed area shows white space I didn't create which creates a false break between posts.

The whole thing's horribly clunky.

Did we also loose karma buttons and values?

I wonder why Mikrotik wastes time for making such unuseful things instead taking care of correcting the bugs in ROS.

Everything here is getting worse and worse... How to??

Can't they work on more than one thing at once?

I enjoyed new forum look. Only problems is lack of contrast, color sheme which doesn't look like MikroTik.com (where is red and green?) and already reported missing karma module.

Good news, we have a separate team of people that work on design and brochures, this will not slow down RouterOS development :)
  • spacing is corrected
  • readability of topic list improved
  • post body text visibility improved and signature/title made lighter
  • unread posts is back
  • contrast improved with new color scheme

You really think of us so little, that you believe designers are also fixing RouterOS bugs :) ?
No, normis, not at all. Even the people are not the same, the money paid for their output is the same. If you have money for such things why you do not have money to pay the good and experienced software development quality manager that will take care of your development process to ensure you are not breaking in subsequent release anything that was good in previous release? Why you spend money on the forum look and not on dude, for example?

Do you think that this change will bring new customers and rise your profit? Or how it should help you? I have not seen any reason for such change, so why you did so?

Re: New forum look & feel

I think the new design is decent, especially with the new tweaks...the new blue is much better, thank you.

The only thing that I find kind of annoying and...corny is the "rubber band" effect that you see within the body of the page when you scroll back up to the top. In most browsers, it just looks kind of weird, and sometimes in Firefox it prevents me from scrolling all the way up to the top on my first try (don't know why, and sometimes is not reproducible). But it looks especially bad when you are browsing on Safari in OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, or Yosemite, because Safari already has a rubber-banding effect that it applies, so you see it happen two times: once in the middle of the page (because of your code), and then at the same time with the whole page (because of Safari).

It wasn't a completely bad idea and it was worth a try, but it turns out in the end, after having tried it, that it doesn't look or work that well and doesn't really add much. My recommendation would be to get rid of it. Hopefully whoever spent the time that they did to make that effect work on this page won't be offended by my dislike of it. :)

Guys, this is a theme. MikroTik employees did not spend any time with it. It's just the best we found. We will tweak it as much as we can, but don't think that RouterOS bugs were not fixed because we spent money on this :)

P.S.: weird scroll effects disabled

  • spacing is corrected
  • readability of topic list improved
  • post body text visibility improved and signature/title made lighter
  • unread posts is back
  • contrast improved with new color scheme
Thank you, it is better now!

A few things however:
1) Additional clicks and waiting for a menu to appear are still present if clicking any of the "View x posts".
Before they were visible and clickable right away.
2) View your posts is located away from all other "View x posts" buttons.
Sometime I click the big FORUM button, wait for the list to appear and then realize I wanted to click "View your posts". (I guess that is just me not being used to the new layout.)
3) Karma is still gone :(
4) Sigs are now (in my oppinion) too washed out.
5) Divider lines between posts, between the sig, between the left-side user info space and the post, etc... are all too close in color to background color, those should be more prominent in my oppinion.

Other then these, the new color-scheme/layout is now much better.

The design is nice, but formerly it only took 1 click to "View unread posts" or "Mark forums read". Now it takes 1 click, 1 mouse movement and another click.
Seems not that big a deal, but slows done workflow much.

Jarda, what do you mean by unused screen? Make sure you are using a modern browser, and have tried to refresh the page. Sometimes cache can give strange results. here is mine:

Absolutely hate the new format. As others have noted, the contrast is way off so it can be difficult at first glance to find where one post begins and another ends.

Also suffering from the lack of screen real estate usage on Chrome. Lots of wasted space that could be used for the topic and replies text.

Some images are quite large. Can the images be set to resize to the width of the browser window? As a forum contributor I would try to resize an image before posting to increase the readability. But inline resizing would be good for the large images.

Switchable themes so those of us who view the forum on widescreens can at least see it properly. Full screen mode doesnt change content width.

Please, allow users to select prosilver theme in their profiles. Let us choose!

into your profile / signature: http://forum.mikrotik.com/ucp.php?i=pro ... =signature ?

Lets join in this together. If the forum will be full of the same request, maybe things could change. Especially if we all know how easy it is...

You won't believe what a crazy dream I had. I came to MikroTik forum and it had this strange flat style with washed out colors, so it was hard to tell where one thing ends and the other one begins. And everything was so huge, it felt like my monitor shrunk to old 14" CRT with 800x600 resolution. And the texts were kind of blurry and hard to read. What a nightmare! I'm so happy to be awake again. ;)

The color contrast on this theme is much better than the other one. I can live with this one.

Is it possible to have more definition on what is read and not read?

When click to read the unread part of a thread, I find it difficult to know if I have be redirected to the right spot. The heading is a little darker In the unread posts, but sometimes it is very hard to tell.

I did not realize how bad the new form design was until I found out I could change my form style to SE Square.

Thanks!!!

For the sake of consistency, wouldn't a "Mark forums read" button on the main page above the forum list on the right side be appropriate?
At the moment, one needs to go to the Forum drop-down list for that, which is, let's say, different compared to the topic pages...

I think SE Square style has what you are looking for.
