Great! Lots of news! Like it..

But always more to ask for;
Still no many port (5-12) Gigabit Poe out devices with extended monitoring functions.... :? Been asked for a long time.
I'll guess we really have to shop somewhere else for that....

Hope to see some first results of the new sectors soon. How do they compare towards ubnt, e-Cambium or RF-elements carrier grade sectors?

·Single stream TCP 802.11 performance"

How does this relate to the throughputs we can expect on backhaul links? I thought I was already pushing the throughputs to the limit the protocol limits us too? Now we can suddenly increase that?

Does it count for NV2? Or only 802.11 standard? nStreame?

Would be nice to get more info on what we'd really can expect on this.

Could I expect general speed/capacity improvement on AP-client networks where AP's cpu is the limiting factor?

Or does it more mean people browsing will make better use of the available capacity since a webpage opens many streams and now each stream to remote server gets better speed?

Definitely want more info on this....

With fast path trough wireless it should unload cpu and you should see general speed/capacity improvement.

GPON

Hey Normis, is there any way I could get some GPON modules for testing? And anything else related to GPON?

We are building some GPON networks right now. I've got five Adtran TA 5000 head-end units (the big guys). (FYI - I can handle 800 GPONs which comes out to a possible maximum 51K GPON customers - however I am normally running 8-way or 16-way splitters so that I can get long distance reaches to customers). I am sure I can afford some ports for testing some Mikrotik GPON modules.

I would like to test these new Mikrotik GPON modules and report my findings back to Mikrotik. Also, I would like to help in a Mikrotik GPON forum to help with configs to make the GPON work.

I emailed sales about this a few months ago and I was told it would be released at the end of September. It seems that it has been delayed for some reason. I would just like to get some kind of update on the status of it.

I desperately want a Mikrotik home AC router. There are other SOHO AC routers out there... but I like my mikrotiks too much to use anything else.

While the cost is much higher you could make your own Mikrotik router with AC wifi.
Just use a routerboard with a mini-pci, an antenna, and an enclosure.

http://routerboard.com/RB912UAG-2HPnD
http://routerboard.com/R11e-5HacD
http://routerboard.com/CA411-711
http://routerboard.com/ACSWIM

With the above you can have a router with dual band wifi (2.4GHz N & 5GHz AC) and Gigabit ethernet (so that you can connect a switch and route all traffic from one interface).
Of course it's nowhere near the price tag of an hAP but at least you can have a Mikrotik router with AC Wifi :P

Yeah I had considered this, but the price and lack of Ethernet ports makes assembling my own impractical.

Regarding lack of ethernet ports there's this solution depending on your performance needs.
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/SwOS/Router-On-A-Stick

Of course this solution only adds up to the final price so obviously it's not ideal :)

Haha I had actually considered a setup similar to this, but I'm afraid that as soon as I invest in getting something custom up and running, an official hAP AC announcement will happen the next day! :lol:

I know. But I'm a Network engineer who's looking to operate 50+ of these with minimal effort/cost, not an electronics hobbyist. I really need a one-in-all plug-n-play solution to keep maintenance overhead low.

I'd be interested in some basic configuration example. The local carrier is Bell Canada - I know for the L2TP tunnel there is a session key they assign to us. I really do not know where to start configuring L2TP / LNS in the Mikrotik.

hmm, so hardly any use for most WISP's? They need to use tdma or nstreme to get things going in nowadays saturated spectrum and high traffic demands. If I switch my nv2 off half of my network collapses....

?? Why? For the money of one MT soho router you can probably can buy two bulk routers that do the same or one high end that is doing better.
Don't mistake me, I'd love Mikrotik stuff but I hardly use anything out of their soho product line. Other brands can do the same for much less money.
But we are more waiting for Gb poE out routers and switches and better wifi capacities for use in WISP networks.
Any WISP that is now reforming his network into Gb and 'ac' is witheld to fastnet PoE routers or a weak 4 port limited switch. And 'ac' needs more development to. I can't even do a spectral scan with my 'ac' radios...... nor see the power output. pfffff.

Can an HAP-AC be used as a "station" link on 5Ghz and an Access Point on 2Ghz at the same time?
That would be cool, eh? 8)

Such an device has been discussed before. In principle is looks nice. But to start you need to have two radio's (5 and 2,4Ghz) and usually the operators' signal is insufficient for a good connection if the unit is placed indoors. And an outdoor unit make no sense for indoor coverage.

I understand. I just mentioned a solution. I don't know the needs of each and everyone of you.
Just to clarify though, routerboards are not some 'electronics hobby' :lol:

Before the integrated outdoor wifi devices from mikrotik and other vendors many WISPs used (and still do) Routerboards in special enclosures outdoors to do networking. And before that we even used standard x86 PCs to do the job.
It would be a really boring electronics hobby to simply install a routerboard on an enclosure don't you think? :P
It hardly qualifies as 'electronics' if you don't have to at least use a soldering iron IMHO :)

I don't think bridging so many users (on a single main router there can be more than 150 users) can be a good idea...

Re: Newsletter 68 - GPON

Tue Nov 10, 2015 3:12 am

O so many questions about the GPON module in a Mikrotik...

Can it support Sub H ?
Can the head-end perform remote software upgrades, reboots, resets any typically anything a head-end should be able to do with a client GPON device?
Who has it running now ?
What will be the price ?
When will it start shipping ?
How can it be connected to a UPS and notify the head-end when the power is out ?
What are the plans for SIP (VoIP) support ?
What kind of distances has it been tested to using 8 & 16 & 32 & 64 way splitters ?
If the GPON module is inserted into a Mikrotik SFP+ port, is the port still 1 gig or does the module internally jump to up 10 gig to allow downloads greater than 1 gig down (2+ gig) ?
Who and where can we ask questions specific about the Mikrotik GPON module ?
What information is reported back to the head-end (only the GPON module) ?
Does it support bandwidth shaping (rate limiting) ?
Is there any diagnostic information available to the Mikrotik when looking at the GPON module ?
Are there any new commands to support the GPON module ?
Can the Mikrotik GPON module also be switched to Active Ethernet then back to GPON ?
How many watts does it need ?

Confirmed OLT devices that work with this GPON ONT module.

* ZTE
* Huawei
* Alcatel-Lucent
* Calix
* Adtran

I should be able to provide more tested vendores later on.

Tested MikroTik Devices (later on will be added to SFP module compatibility table in wiki).

CCR series:
* CCR1072
* CCR1032
* CCR1016
* CCR1009 (Ok with SFP, SFP+ still checking on some compatiblity issues.)

CRS series:
* CRS109
* CRS112
* CRS210
* CRS212/CRS226

RB series:
* RB2011
* RB922/RB921
* RB953
* RB260GSP
* RB FTC

> Can it support Sub H ?

I am not familiar with this term can you link any reference, Then I could check it.

> Can the head-end perform remote software upgrades, reboots, resets any typically anything a head-end should be able to do with a client GPON device?

So far I think updates to GPON module firmware can be updated with dev tools. But I check on this to get more precise info.

> Who has it running now ?

The device is not yet released. So only people who are testing it.

> What will be the price ?
> When will it start shipping ?

Regarding these two questions you should contact our sales department.

> How can it be connected to a UPS and notify the head-end when the power is out ?

No, it can't. UPS must be monitored by host device if it supports that.

> What are the plans for SIP (VoIP) support ?

What additional support does it require? As far as I know It's already as part of the service options in GPON.

> What kind of distances has it been tested to using 8 & 16 & 32 & 64 way splitters ?

As it is compliant with ITU-T G984.2 Class B+, means it can transmit at least 20km.

> If the GPON module is inserted into a Mikrotik SFP+ port, is the port still 1 gig or does the module internally jump to up 10 gig to allow downloads greater than 1 gig down (2+ gig) ?

It is a 1.25G module, it won't go faster than that.

> Who and where can we ask questions specific about the Mikrotik GPON module ?

One option here. Or send your questions about GPON to support email.

> What information is reported back to the head-end (only the GPON module) ?

Only info that is related to GPON ONT module, yes.

> Does it support bandwidth shaping (rate limiting) ?

As per ITU-T G984 standard it does.

> Is there any diagnostic information available to the Mikrotik when looking at the GPON module ?

DDMI printous should be available both from host and OLT side if they support that.

> Are there any new commands to support the GPON module ?

From host device perspective it is just a simple SFP module, So no additional commands.

> Can the Mikrotik GPON module also be switched to Active Ethernet then back to GPON ?

No. It's pon only. OR more precisely PON on fiber side and Ethernet on host device side.

> How many watts does it need ?

~2W in worst case scenario.

Confirmed OLT devices that work with this GPON ONT module.
* ZTE
* Huawei
* Alcatel-Lucent
* Calix
* Adtran
Can you please test RAISECOM?
CRS series:
* CRS109
* CRS112
* CRS210
* CRS212/CRS226

RB series:
* RB260GSP
* RB FTC
Why not CRS125 and RB260GS? Thanks

@honzam

We don't have any OLTs from them. In the end we also cannot confirm compatibility with all of the vendors out there that manufacture OLTs. Anyhow as soon as we get some more info on OLTs that work with the module we make it known. For now you can wait when modules will become available and get some samples to test with various OLT from different manufacturers that are available to you.
Why not CRS125 and RB260GS? Thanks
At least hardware vise these models are almost identical module works in both of them:
RB260GSP = RB260GS
CRS125 = CRS109

Module is also now added in wiki compatibility page:
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/MikroTik_ ... lity_table

I think I will start adding compatible OLTs vendors there also.

When GPON modules are available, we will test raisecom and we'll keep you informed ...

Maybe you can say:
rb260GSx
CRS1xx
it would be clear ... (Also on wiki)

hmm. crs1xx also applies for crs112, which is not in the same league with its featherlight 400MHz cpu.
on the other hand the gpon sfp is supported there as well.

> Can it support Sub H ?

I am not familiar with this term can you link any reference, Then I could check it.
...

.
SubH is a out-of-band IP-based-management-network to an ONT.

Example: If I have an ONT (bridged or residential-gateway-NAT) with SubH configured, then I have access to connect to it and directly manage the ONT from my office computer network. The SubH network is NOT reachable from the customer LAN or the ONT WAN. Only the ONT itself can talk/listen on that network.

I would guess - that with some tinkering, a Mikrotik could do something similar. I would guess a VRF configuration (virtual router) inside a Mikrotik could do the same thing. Then there would not be a route conflict between WAN or LAN IP addresses to/from the SubH interface. The SubH interface uses a vlan tag inside the ONT WAN to the head-end.

The SubH interface permits out-of-band software upgrades and configuration management to the ONT. Also, if you have a purely bridging ONT (no local IP addresses on the ONT - just bridging between the WAN & LANs), the SubH interface is still pingable and accessible to get into the ONT (or Mikrotik).

> What are the plans for SIP (VoIP) support ?

What additional support does it require? As far as I know It's already as part of the service options in GPON.

...
.
I think (not sure) that there are some mini-PCI cards which support SIP - which would have 1 or 2 RJ-11 telephone POTS jacks to connect a normal house telephone. Most ONTs have the option or on-board SIP interfaces.

It would be really a nice feature for a Mikrotik to support a mini PCI SIP card. Then anybody doing phone services using Vo-IP could use a Mikrotik SIP card. The network and UPS battery backup would then only be needed local to the Mikrotik and not the rest of the customer network.

Without Mikrotik SIP hardware/software SIP support, then an external ATA (Ethernet IP to SIP) device would be needed - and now you end up with at least 3 devices needing UPS battery backup - the Mikrotik & the ATA & an external switch.

Here in the U.S. there are some telephone laws that require so many hours of battery operation (4 or 6 or 12 hours?) for phones when the power goes out.

With on-board SIP (mini-PCI card), a simple 12 volt battery should be able to carry the load for the necessary amount of time when the power is out. With external ATAs and switches, now you need a full-blown UPS that can run hours and hours when the power is out.

A Mikrotik mini-PCI SIP card could then be used in almost every Mikrotik.

If I had a wish-list for Mikrotik to consider, it would be this:
- Outdoor plastic case for the side of the house.
- Holds the Mikrotik (with a SIP card -or- holds an external ATA and switch)
- All customer connections and fiber connections go into this plastic outdoor case
- Ability to loop about 30 feet if fiber (fiber from the drop)
- Low voltage from the house to the outdoor case (12 or 24 or 48 volts)
- Power goes into a simple battery charger & battery - then into the Mikrotik. No 3rd party indoor or outdoor UPS needed.
- Some method to report power status (on battery - battery voltage).

Many ONTs support RF-Overlay (cable TV over fiber to the ONT). This is now longer needed because IP-TV has gotten much better for a cable-tv company.

With a total Mikrotik solution (active-fiber or GPON supporting SIP & battery & outdoor case) you would pretty much have a total hardware solution which could attract everybody - I would think. And by making these features work with existing Mikrotiks, then you could have a hardware solution for almost everybody including multi-dwellings.

Hello,

Very good idea with GPON.
But when will run full IGMP without that GPON does not operate to the fullest!
GPON without IGMP is unnecessary.
