Re: MikroTik News February 2018 (Issue #80)

Mon Feb 26, 2018 9:56 pm

Hello, I bought an RB3011 router.
I own two WAN connections with public IP and fixed optical fiber.
I would need a basic configuration for my RB3011 where I can route the outbound traffic of my LAN for one of the two WANs and the incoming traffic to local servers for the other WAN.
I thank whoever can indicate me or redirect me towards the solution.

Thank you so much!!

Why routeros devices like powerbox pro, hex poe, hap ac2 only have 16Mb flash?

With basic install, there is less then 1mb free space, trying to run a hotspot on it with just a little bit of html/img pages will run the device completely out of flash memory.

RB951xxx had 128Mb flash, flash is cheap these days, why not just a little bit more like 32Mb, 64Mb or even 128MB ram? Even CCR with 2 partitions (master/recovery) will run out 128Mb flash easily during upgrade for example

these are home routers, not really ideal for a complicated hotspot server and custom login pages.
for those devices that have a USB port or microSD slot, you can put the Hotspot directory there.

For now I am fine with 16MB flash storage. In case RouterOS v7 will ever be available I hope my universal toolbox (mAP that travels with me) will be able to run all the features with current releases.

I ordered one to replace a 962, our vender said they expect to have them around the end of march.
I am unhappy that Mikrotik has no support for any of the wave2 features however, and that i cant get a answer as to if you plan to add the features support or not

Love the POE switch. Is it really that much additional engineering expense to offer an additional version of these devices in a weatherproof case like the PowerBox? Do you believe there is no market? Outdoor equipment is the norm where we are.
I see UBNT announced an outdoor weatherproof gigabit NanoSwitch today. Looks like I may be introducing my first model of non-MT equipment into my network. Didn't really want to do this.

How is this different from PowerBOX Pro? https://mikrotik.com/product/RB960PGS-PB
Just that it's specifically a switch?

I realize I can use a PB Pro as an outdoor gig switch if I am forced. But the advantage of not using a $100 router in places where I need a $40 POE switch should speak for itself. (Yes, I realize the switch in this newsletter is $180, but it's eight ports, for I would have to buy two PB Pros.) I suspect MT could put out a four-port weatherproof POE switch at nearly the same price point as UBNT.

I agree. PB is not IP certificate.

PowerBox Pro is essentially the RB960PGS (hEX PoE) board in an outdoor/weatherproof case. And the former is $20 more expensive ($99) than the latter ($79). Now it appears that a switch similar to PowerBox Pro router would be the RB260GSP ($55.95) in a weatherproof case and with the expected price tag of $55.95+$20=$75.95. I.e. much closer to the PowerBox Pro than to the UBNT offering.
