Product comparison matrix

Fri Dec 14, 2018 10:21 am

We have made a table view comparison matrix for some products. Let me know what you think, what's missing and what's not working:

A tab with dual power supply possibility would be nice ...

And the same table with discontinued devices ...

There is column named "Number of DC inputs".
However some kind of filter would be nice - lets say that I have power PoE device that supplies 24 V, so I want to filter devices by PoE and input voltage.

You have a little bug in values ordering - they are ordered Alphanumericaly, not by value (try to order by column "10/100/1000 Ethernet ports").

There is column named "Number of DC inputs".
"Number of DC inputs" is not the same as dual power supply like the 2x 220v in some CCR types needed for redundant datacenter setups ...

Great table and it would be awesome if products of interest can be selected and viewed/compared in a dedicated table.

Nice one!

I am missing "hEX PoE", product code RB960PGS.

An additional column with products codes would also be nice. They appear in the mouse-over URL on the product names, but you cannot search or sort by product code.

Very nice!

Column sorting is a bit of a mess (nothing is sorted properly, except for columns with plain numbers), but we can live with it :P

That's not the point of a matrix :) Sorting is filtering. You can shift+click to sort by more columns. Yes, I know sort is alphabetical, but this is how the values are stored in the DB, for now.

You might want to add some consistency to the numbers then.. 1GHz is smaller than 800MHz in that matrix

The column sorting is done in the browser with Javascript, not in the database.

I am just saying that sorting, the way it works now, it's pretty much useless on fields that do not contain plain numbers.
If I want to sort by memory or cpu frequency the results are all over the place.

Also if that's not the purpose of the matrix, then why tell the users to click on column headers to do sorting?
This table outputs most common specifications of devices that run RouterOS. Click on the table headers to sort by column. Show fullscreen

Well, sorting is filtering, but filtering is a bit wider. Like price range - it's filtering, but not sorting (basically, I was looking for something cheap with 5 GHz - I didn't know what I should sort on...)

I would prefer to see CPU frequency always in MHz, even if higher than 1000MHz.

Two variants of RB4011 are specified 1400MHz resp. 1.4GHz.

Hi Normis,

I think you should add a product filter on the left of the table, and make the table more wider to the right to fill more of the screen.
The product filter can consist of categorized collapsable menu's, in those collapsable menu's there are checkboxes and range sliders to filter out what you want/don't want to see.
A bit of a webshop like feature, to find the device that suits your needs.

Examples (sorry, it's in Dutch, but you'll get the idea if you play with it a bit or use a page translator):
https://tweakers.net/categorie/560/mode ... producten/
https://tweakers.net/categorie/311/netw ... producten/

As you can see, you can select:
  • Wifi yes/no
  • 5 Ghz support yes/no
  • Wifi protocols (a/b/g/n/ac/wave2/etc)
  • Number of RJ45 / SFP ports (range sliders)
  • Type of RJ45 ethernet (10/100/1G/10G/etc)
  • Througput in pps (range slider)
  • Max. bandwidth in bps
  • Power usage in watt
  • PoE type (at/af, range slider how many ports support this type)
  • PoE budget in watt
  • Card interface type (miniPCI, USB) and number of those interfaces.
  • Dimensions/size
  • Releasedate (so, old and new devices can be in the same table)
  • Device type/intention (router/switch/wireless/ptp/etc)
  • And many more...
The table in these examples is meant for product comparison (just like the MikroTik hardware page), not so much as a matrix.
But it's a good lay-out nevertheless. Maybe after you apply the filter, you can hide columns that are not used by the filtered products so the table gets smaller (now horizontal scrolling is very annoying).

The horisontal scroll bar is not shown before you scroll down to the bottom of the page.
So if you like to see more columns, you need to scroll down, scroll to right, then scroll up again.
Horisontal scroll bar should be shown all the time.

This javascript library has many functions for filter, sorting and formatting that can be usefull for this matrix : https://mottie.github.io/tablesorter/docs/

Please add the filter and sort2hash modules. This will make very easy to create views of this table and pass the links to "show" only a subset of the data.

It would be useful if the matrix contains some information about the hardware-accelerated encryption support.
