RouterBOARD 112 memory!

Thu Aug 24, 2006 12:18 am

Hi all,

I wonder is Routerboard-112 16 MB Ram (http://www.routerboard.com/rb100.html) enough to run RouterOs?

Because Router OS document haven't any suggestion about Ram requirements for RB-112 at URL http://www.mikrotik.com/docs/ros/2.9/guide/specs

Is there anybody that use RB-112 with 16MB Ram?
And if its work how much waste when is bootup?

Thanks for reply

Mine are all in the field; I can't look at the usage at the moment. They do run RouterOS quite well. These have a place in the network - at the end. They'll run out of cpu before ram. Cool little boards.

Edit ---> Had a spare in the garage. It has 6.1 meg free setup as a CPE.

Not a problem. Just something you'll see. Just connecting with WinBox will spike the CPU.

As a simple CPE, they're fine.

Start trying to run OSPF or Hotspot on them, and you run out of RAM - fast.

Less than 1500k free RAM and you'll start seeing lockups/erratic performance.

The paging functions in the Linux kernel will do this if it runs out of pageable memory to page around. The cpu load would also be reduced if there was more available memory (or a swap file, hehe).
You could put a 1 ghz cpu in there with that amount of memory and it wouldn't exactly dazzle you with performance when so much cpu time is spent in the paging system.
