RB1100still relevant for purchase or go CCR?

Mon May 30, 2016 3:33 pm

Hi,

I'd like to ask if MIKROTIK RB1100AHx2 is still a device worth buy or it will be slowly phased out and replaced by CCR.
I am considering RB1100AHx2 or CCR1009 - the sfp is nice to have as I have an optical circuit from may ISP and my switch does have a sfp port as well but having none is something I can live with.....
Both devices are an overkill for me as its for my house (I just need few vpn server and client connections, hence the hw encryption is a must, scripting, PBR, some VLANs and lots of ports) but I like these devices and they will be a nice upgrade from my old RB4xx and a nice comeback from Ubiquity due to enough performance and lots of space for trying and learning new stuff and techniques....
Should I go for the CCR which seems to be the future (and there is a good chance that this device will be strong keep do its job for years) or stick with the RB1100 to save 150usd?

Thanks!

Have you looked at the rb850? Inexpensive, fast, hardware AES. It doesn't have the SFP but it sounds like that isn't a must.

Yes I have seen this one but for me there isn't enough ethernet ports and this time I'd rather go with some of the rack mounted and more powerful ones :)

RB3011
Yup - that one looks pretty nice but does have no hw encryption so the ipsec will be slow as hell. After some research I found that it does have no hw encryption "yet" and it "should" come in v7 but tbh its the first arm based device and hence I am not sure what to expect and how long it will take to make it stable. After years I count only on features that are there at the time of purchase.. :)
If its one year after today when I am choosing the router for next few years, 3011 would be the weapon of choice but currently I am really not sure about this one (the question is how reasonable my concerns are)...

Or maybe....Even without the hw encryption, do we have any benchmarks for ovpn using aes256 and for the ipsec?

Thanks
