RB3011 internal psu?

Thu Aug 18, 2016 2:59 pm

Hi.
I just got my 1st 3011.
What a nice piece of kit.
Interesting enough there seems to be a pre-stamped position
for an internal psu in the rack mount case next to RB pcb,
and a cut-out for a female power plug in the back.
Now, I do understand the reasoning behind the decision to use external power supplies,
but I would love to see mikrotik providing the option to buy a separate psu kit or at least
pointing to suitable psus available(?) in the market.
It would allow diyers to mod an internal psu inside if/when preferable.
Ofc as it is there is enough room in the case to mod any psu inside,
but an elegant solution with a bolt-on psu would be more elegant.
BTW, I can't seem to find a pcb diagram for 3011.
Are there any pins for dc-in available?

This same issue existed with the RB2011. There are some people who modified it themselves,
you can just remove the cutout, mount a IEC receptacle, and put the supply inside the case and
connect it to the receptacle. Of course it requires a safe connection between the receptacle and
the pins of the supply, depending on the type of supply you have. Use heat shrink sleeve.

When you are looking for an alternative: the CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+ is a comparable router with even
higher performance and with TWO builtin supplies (redundant). Of course a little more expensive but
really good in a professional setup. I use it as internet router for >250 clients that are on a building
WiFi net on a 50 Mbit fiber, and it never goes over 1% CPU usage.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Unfortunately ccr is way above my budget (for home/soho/lab use that is).
I was like hoping that Mtik could suggest a suitable psu board that fits the screw holes of the case.
Modding will be.

You have all the specs at routerboard.com: the 3011 supports 10-30V DC, drawing 10W max.

So in that regard you have plenty of possibilities.

The simplest and safest approach you can take is the same as already done on the 1100AHx2:

First locate PSUs whose dimensions and shape fits for that application; then check its specs; for typical PSUs, the typical 12V 1A is fine, as is a 24V / 500mA PSU; anything that outputs 10W or more between 10 and 30V DC.

Yes. Check the "RB3011 internal Power Supply" thread.
