RouterOS on USB PenDrive??

Sun Oct 01, 2006 10:33 pm

Hi all.

Has anyone ever attempted to put the RouterOS onto a USB PendDrive?
A lot of more modern PC's and Laptops will boot from a USB PenDrive and I as thinking that its a cheaper alternative to a Disk On Module solution which is connectd to an IDE 2 USB adapter.....well....only in my case as I seem to have some old PenDrives laying around.

Just courious if anyone has done it....and if so, how....

Thanks, Jeremy

I think i remember someone asking for support for that in v3.0, so I assume it doesn't work currently...

Yes it can boot / run on a flash drive..

The issue is the system bios and the device the flash device emulates.

RouterOS on one PC may give you one SoftID to activate, and on the next PC, when booted from the same USB flash drive, may give you another SoftID. So first choose your PC. And first try with a Demo license to see if all is fine.

I am running RouterOS off of a USB thumb drive.

I've tried it on two different computers and it worked on both of them without losing the license.
Granted, both of them had the same kind of processor (P4) so I don't know if it will work going from a P4 to, say, a Core 2 duo.

Yes, thank you for the addition. Appreciated.

I think it depends on how the BIOS interprets the USB thumbdrive. :)

Hey by the way, it turns out you can reuse an old SD card, to boot up your Router, WHEN USED WITH AN EXTERNAL USB CADDY (small reader). :)

if you have centered your x86 routers around one platform with same settings on all, there should not be problem with migrating usb drives with routeros installed. different platforms etc. can cause softid to change. so, handle with care.
