Ethernet Test Results

Fri Mar 17, 2017 2:58 pm

I'm trying to get my head around the published Ethernet Test Results on the routerboard.com website.

For example in relation to the RB962UiGS-5HacT2HnT the performance for in Routing / Fast Path is 1,966.1 Mbps (when using 1518 byte).

My understanding is that Mbps = megabits per second.

This unit has 5 x 1Gbps ports so I'm confused why the performance is c. 2Mbps.

Happy to have my maths/sums corrected.

You can push 2Gbits through a port because it is bidirectional...

That board have switch chip and there are only 2 x 1Gbps lines that go to CPU, as indicated in block diagram:
https://i.mt.lv/routerboard/files/RB962 ... 082257.png

so max on 2x 1Gbps lines is 2Gbps (Layer1-speed) if you count out 20 byte Inter Packet Gaps on Ethernet you will end up with 1,966.1 Mbps (with 1518 byte frames)

1,966.2 Mbps is Imperial number notation in fact it is 1966.2Mbps in Normal numbers :)

Thanks for the comments, now I've realised I can't read :-)

I was reading 1,966.1 Mbps as approx 2 Mbps not approx 2 Gbps, doh....
