RB1100AHx4 Dude Edition

Wed May 10, 2017 8:38 am

It's a very cool mt hw but where is hw block diagram? We need to know how many shared ports, can use 2x M2 + SATA together or must choose either M2 or SATA, etc.

Anyone have a release date for this? I'm ready to upgrade all of my sites and this unit would cover just about every use I can think of.

Can you get a full BGP table into 1GB? Is it upgradeable?

I was told by Mikrotik that the RAM is not upgradeable. It is soldering in without sockets.

Our first shipment is arriving around the first of June which falls right after MUM USA in Denver (next week).

So this way noone tested neither the Dude on it, nor the performance? :(

Practical question then: While looking for VPN server to allow 150-200 connections (mix of pptp, l2tp and ovpn) what should be taken: RB1100AHx4 or one of CCR1009 family?

I can see nice words of "The device supports IPsec hardware acceleration and is faster at it than any previous RouterBOARD device (up to 2.2Gbps with AES128)" but if this apply at all to VPNs?

I've pre-ordered one from Baltic Networks. It looks like a nice box and my be just what I'm looking for. The downside is that it should arrive the day before I leave for a 4 week vacation at the beach. Looks like I may be testing how it holds up to sun, sand, and humidity.

Running the RB1100AHx4 with Dude, L2TP IPSEC, Capsman, natting and firewall rules.
Huge improvement over my old RB2011.

One thing I miss is a POE out port for connecting my hap lite accespoint. Just saves a socket outlet.

Since for me this is an ethernet router I don't miss usb for lte stuff (and there are plenty of other storage interfaces), but I strongly agree SFP is the biggest missing feature (2x SFP+ in my dreams).
I'm not an LCD big fan (I always disable it) because pegs cpu in small devices and it's almost useless on bigger ones when they are in racks.
Upgradable memory would be awesome also.

Oh ok, very nice. I wonder if there will be a cheaper non-dude edition. I don't have a huge need for the m.2 or sata which I assume could cut the cost quite a bit.

Oh, I guess it's just not on any list yet. Would love to know the price...

What do you mean by partitions? Secondary RouterOS install is only supported on the main disk. But you can use the M.2 SSD drive for storage, you don't need partitions menu for that.

Hi everyone,

We've just received our RB1100AHx4 Dude Edition and faced a critical bug as for us. We can't establish a connection between bonding interface. We are trying to connect RB1100AHx4 Dude Edition to different vendors Cisco, Mikrotik, HP, FreeBSD server but every time without success. We use a simple configuration from Mikrotik side like:
/inteface bonding add slaves=ether1,ether2 mode=802.3ad lacp-rate=30secs link-monitoring=mii-type1 transmit-hash-policy=layer-2-and-3
The same configuration on our RB2011 works fine.

Did anybody else face the same issue and find a solution? I will be grateful for the help.

Hi Normis,
formating with ext3 or fat32 ? which is better for routeros ?

Just a guess - ext3, as it's native for Linux and has better corruption protection.
fat32 if you need to move data between the router and a PC.

What's the logic behind this? The router has to read the file into RAM and send it, and the other way around on writing. And this has nothig to do with the undelying file system. So unless you want to move that SSD physically to a Windows PC there is no point in that.

You can't physical data by scraping it of the medium so it seems to be bound in some of magical way. ;-)

And then again, in our case one could unsolder the flash chips, scrape the top layes and do a destructive reading cell by cell :D

But seriously,, movig data between devices usually involves a read/write/delete operation, not moving the device itself. I know its just semantics but it dazzled me when I read that the file system could influence a "traditional" copy operation between devices.

Back on topic: FAT32 does not have provisions for restricting access rights to files and directories, so in an exposed system, EXT3 hase some major advantages from a security point of view.

Then you would be dazzled by a RaspberryPI that is a nice device however you can't do anything with it before you prepare a bootable medium on an other device. This medium is inserted into the RaspberryPI and then you can use it. Moving mediums is in the recover and repair business also common so one seeks for a format that is easy to use on different devices.

I find it much simpler and faster to open the router, remove the SSD, plug it into a PC and copy 60G, than to trust the built in SMB server, or FTP/Winbox/sftp.
And yes, I do I have a "Dude Edition" with more than 60G of data stored in it. It currently has two 256GB SSD collecting blacklist data.

Though, for my purposes, I use EXT3, as my macOS systems can read it.

Does x4 that good over 3011? Bypass etc sounds good but the cpu is a bit out of mainstream (ccrs are tile)...

But I do like dual psu!

It definetely looks like 3011 series is out of priority for MT team. Strange to see that while 2011 was quite intensively used and sold for years.

But surely x4 looks like very promising unit. Two PSU, powerful, crypto hw-accelerated, and less expensive than 1009 (the one that also has 2 psu).

P.S. Quite interesing how ethernet bypass works!

1100AHx4 would be the best fit, if it had the SFP port, the LCD and the USB. The lack of SFP is particularly strange.

Then noone will buy CCRs, so this is the market question I suppose.

Not sure about that. CCR has no switch chip and each interface is directly connected to the CPU. When routing between multiple interfaces, it will run circles around RB1100 all day long without a sweat. When using QoS and L7 firewall, CCR will shine even brighter.
So, for pure routing - CCR. For core router - CCR. For Service Providers - CCR.
But for a remote branch/office where you have 1-2 WANs and the rest of the ports will be used on LANs, the RB1100 has switch groups and fits the needs better.

To be honest, I bought my first 2011 just because the LCD and the SFP. And it was love from the first sight :)
Since then, I have deployed many more. At some point around Q4 this year I will start replacing them because of the increasing VPN traffic. Probably with 3011 (given there is still no 1100 with SFP, LCD and USB) for the remote locations.

1100ahx4 is the best as for money for value. 3011 is not under development (one model so far and no news on this side).

Nice to have 24 gig ports, 2 sfp and 2 sfp+ in one device, with switch chips. Best branch office device )

And, to be honest, small PBX software inside ))

If I remove the SSD drive do I end up with a regular RB11AHx4 or is this approach not advisable ?
