FTTH distribution switch with 24sfp and 2-4 SFP+ ports

Wed Jul 05, 2017 7:47 pm

Hi,

we run a small FTTH ISP. I work with Mikrotik at the edge and in the core.

Since we don't have enough customers that make a GPON structure feasable we run the access thru managed L3 Switches.

I am desperate for an affordable 24 SFP switch with 2-4 SFP+ Ports. Do you guys have anything like that on the roadmap? Something like the CSS326-24G-2S+RM but with 24S would be fantastic. Is there a big difference in design between a copper based switch and an fiber based one?

Thanks for your Help

They have a SFP+ switch coming out later this year. For us we have been using the edge-core 24 x SFP + 2 x SFP+ switches for around $1100. Another 2 x SFP+ can be added with a card.

I have been begging for more layer2/layer3 switches from Mikrotik, especially with SFP or SFP+ ports, and ethernet 48 port switches.

That looks very promising. Do you have any experience with them?

No experience with ignitenet we use the arista for high end sfp switch but I suggest to you to use GPON it's easy and cheap than a switched network

There's no switch like that yet.

CRS317-1G-16S+ is the closest one, it was announced at EU17 MUM

- 16 SFP+ ports
- Next generation switching chip
- Wire speed for all 10GbE ports
- Hardware-based Spanning Tree Protocol
- Dual boot SwOS or RouterOS

However, and specially in your scenario (switched fiber deployment) I would not forget the https://routerboard.com/CRS212-1G-10S-1SplusIN (10xSFP and 1xSFP+)

It may not have all the desired ports, but is a "balanced design" in the sense of SFP to SFP+ ratio, which can be strategically deployed nearer the customers side for shorter fiber runs to the 10 SFP ports, running the longer SFP+ uplinks towards your POP aggregation switch or router.

Three CRS212 will provide 30xSFP, 3x1G and 3xSFP+ for less of what a single ignitek runs, and will allow to place each them strategically closer to the customers.

On the POP, you can use either the upcoming CRS317, or use in combination with CCRs which offer the needed SFP/SFP+ ports for the task.

Thanks for that pukkita,

has anybody experience with the switches from fs.com: http://www.fs.com/products/66141.html

@server8: thanks for the advice. Back when i looked into GPON was way more expensive sind the network is quite small...

Thanks for all the advice!

I haven't used the fs switch that you have provided, but it seemed to be the reliable one. bought several really cheap modules and cables from them. Never let me down. Their sales recently told me that they can offer the http://www.fs.com/40g-100g-white-box-sw ... id-457.htm that you may feel interested.

Looks more like a 4C-24S-4S+?

Fiber one definitely greater than copper one, they are more fast and steady. But the cost is higher too. When u look for SFP+ transceivers, you can choose the third party vendors. Some of them are trustful. I bought SFP+, 40G QSFP+ from FS serveral times, you can have a try. SFP+ transceivers: http://www.fs.com/c/sfp-plus-transceivers-56
