RB1100AHx4 vs CCR1009 as PPPoE server

Tue Feb 27, 2018 11:49 am

Hello,

Currently i have several locations with CCR1009 running as PPPoE servers for 300-400 customers per location.
Some locations with redundancy (2xCCR) and some without.

I'm planning to buy some RB's to provide redundancy.
So i'm wondering whether RB1100AHx4 has enough power to handle 300-400 pppoe sessions with qos (30-200Mb simple queue per pppoe session) and 10-15 firewall rules.

RB1100AHx4 is almost 2x cheaper than CCR1009.... ;)

Thank you in advance for any tips :)

problem would be interface speed. a 1gig interface would max out fast.

Thanks.

Maximum outbound traffic (to customers) does not exceed 600Mbps per device.
So it's no problem for me....

The question was about cpu power.

I do not know. The RB1000AHx4 is new enough that I doubt many people have tried similar configurations with them yet.

You might want to get two of them for one of the places currently using a single CCR1009 and see what happens. If they work out, take the CCR1009 to one of the other places that need redundancy. Since they are almost half the cost, even if it takes both of them to do the work of one CCR1009, you're not out much extra money. You will then have a definitive answer one way or the other from the best authority for your particular situation, you.

Of course if they have bugs with regard to PPPoE, you may be out a bit more than the cost of one CCR. But I expect complete failure to be unlikely.

Let us know what you find out.

if you have 600mbps per customer, you will have a problem with 300 :)

but cpu will not be a problem, if the only thing you do is to let them have a ip from pppoe with their user / pass

if you do some more cpu intensive opperation like queues , you just have to try. I have not seen customer as a problem to cpu, only interface speed. A 1100AH2X would manage 500+ CPE's, but it depends on speed to each CPE

since 6 months im using one 1100AH4 as test and looks very nice,
pppoe interfaces count 200-300 with ~300mbps to customers and using switched last 3 ports as for next node with another 100-200mbps.
cpu usage max 14%
but no nat on this machine. just pppoe/dhcp/queues

Per device (per pppoe server) not per customer....

Great news, very promising :)

Your setup is very similar to mine, so... i'm going to buy one device for tests :D

Thanks for all to everyone who tried to help me :)
