RB260GSP with cAP ac - POE compatibility

Mon Mar 26, 2018 10:28 pm

Hello,
i already have a Mikrotik 260 GSP Switch (https://mikrotik.com/product/RB260GSP) and I currently think about buying a new access point.

Can this switch supply enough power via ethernet to the new Mikrotik cAP ac (https://mikrotik.com/product/cap_ac) or would I need to use the separate power supply?

I know this is a quick and easy question, however i never used POE so I just want to check this before i place an order.

Thanks in advance to everyone!

Some reading of supplied manuals reveal: RB260GSP can output max 1A of current per PoE port. When using supplied power supply (24V) that means approximately 24W. On the other hand cAP ac has rated power consumption of 13W and allowed input voltage is 17-57V which is on par with RB260GSP supplied power supply.

However: cAP ac data says that PoE in is strictly active 802.3af/at while RB260GSP only supports passive PoE out. And these two don't mix.

In short: you can not power cAP ac off RB260GSP.

The part about Passive PoE is just missing from the specs page.
You can power it with is Passive PoE for sure.
Read the Quick Guide: https://i.mt.lv/routerboard/files/15173 ... -ac-wg.pdf
Or just follow the logic: it has Passive PoE injector included with it :)

Bummer. Until recently I followed fine engineers' rule which says: "when everything else fails, read the fine manual" (I believe original phrasing has some other f-word in place). Then I started to believe in reading manuals beforehand and that principle obviously doesn't work out that well.

Guess I'm back to square one

Well, reading as much as possible about an equipment you are going to buy is always a good idea.
And of course starting with the manual. :)
