M33G M.2 Sata Support

Wed May 23, 2018 1:27 pm

Hi,

are there plans for the future to also support Sata M.2 drives in the M33G (provided the boards hardware is capable of that)? If I read brochure and quick-guide correctly, only m.2 drives using the pcie-protocol are currently supported. Unfortunately, 2242 size m.2 pcie drives seem to be pretty hard to get.

Thanks in advance,

buzzdee

the sheet for the SoC doesn't say it has SATA controller - and for msata (regardless whether mpcie or m.2 for factor) ssds this is a must.
pcie ssds can be supported if the mmips train has nvme support built in. or at least ahci.
in these days the form-factor doesn't define much, esp in case of mPCIe(-alike) slots.

you could use a regular usb3-sata bridge though. i know, it's bulky.

Hi Donewave,

thanks for figuring that out. I think I'll go with an industrial micro-sd and see how that holds up to a dude-database.

Have a nice day

I'm also considering setting up Dude server on this board, and I have been looking around for suitable m.2 drives, preferably 42mm long.
From what you say, is the M33G not capable of doing regular m.2 SSDs?
I don't have the full picture regarding what depends on what here...can you shed some more light on what would be the best SSD in terms of read/write speed? Which speeds can I expect?

Anyone tested out Dude on SSD on this board?
My experience from testing Dude on USB3 or Hi-speed MicroSD volumes (CCR1009 and RB3011) is that the writing of the Dude DB to the drive is the bottleneck.

RBM33G works with NVMe SSD, format ext3 or fat32. Picture is with SKhynix PCIe 256GB M.2 2280 NVMe from HP ProBook. Unfortunatelly the big black chip temperature is very high but maybe it is standard for these chips or add some heatsink will help. Same test with SanDisk M.2 2242 SSD SATA III not works = OS shows nothing to format

Finding an M2 which has both, the right size (M.2 2242) and the right Key (M Key) seems to be impossible.
M.2 with the 2242 form factor seem to allways use B+M key.
In theory B+M should support both, NVMe (which the routerboard uses) and SATA (which will be unused).

So i gave a B+M-Key SSD a try.
Lexar LNM520-128RB
It did not work. It's not shown in RouterOS.

Can anybody suggest an SSD to buy?
Using another form factor like M.2 2280 ist NOT an option in my use-case. I need to mount it properly since it will have to deal with vibration.

I see KIOXIA (2230) and Optane (2242).

I don't know if they work.

It seems Mikrotik has to think about 2230 screw holes, or one would have to source a bracket.

Thanks a lot, it just did not came to my mind to try a 2230 M.2, since MikroTik did not provide a mounting hole for that.
But then i had the idea to use a 3d-printed 2230-to-2242-M.2 extender [1], which is a better-than-nothing solution, tbh.

I did now order a 2230 M.2 (Kioxia KBG40ZNS256G).
Will report back here, if i can confirm that this particular M.2 works with the M33G, so other users have something they could relay on.

@MikroTik
Please consider adding an additional mounting hole for 2230 M.2 to your products, since there is almost no market for M-Key 2242 M.2.
Except for the extreme expensive Intel Optane there is no M-Key 2242 M.2.
2230 M.2 are more available, since there seems to be way more demand for the smallest possible form factor than for the 2nd smallest.

I don't know how many Mikrotik products have M.2 . Another filter missing on the website.

M.2 with the 2242 form factor seem to allways use B+M key.
those are M.2 Legacy SATA disks, incapable for PCIe operation. since the SoC on this routerboard doesn't have no SATA controller, those can't be used. even if the physical form factor exposes pins to a certain functionality (the B-key also provides possibility for PCIex2 connection) those leads are usually not connected on the SSD side. SATA lines are also exposed to M-key devices, but obviously they aren't used by NVMe disks.
the easiest way to tell whether a device is capable for NVMe operation is to check the max transfer rates: if they are below 700MBps, you can be sure it's a legacy SATA SSD and will not work with NVMe slots, regardless whether it fits physically.

this chart explains everything

This board based by Mediatek MT7621A and support old version PCIe 1.1 = NVMe 1.1.

Kioxia KBG40ZNS256G works as expected in my RBM33 (ext3 with Dude running using it for the data directory).
The only problem was it being short, which I solved by cutting a piece of plastic (a single sided PCB in my case) to hold it down in place with the original screw.

Will this SSDs work on M.2 RB33G ?
