CRS326 - safe temperatures?

Wed Jul 04, 2018 12:49 am

Hello, today my CRS326 and CRS317 arrived and I'm a bit concerned about operation temperatures. CRS317 has spinning fan and it deals with temperature quite fine sitting at 42-46 deg on idle but CRS326 seems to struggle with temperatures, idling at 76 deg. When I checked against my CCR1009-PC it doesn't look that bad, CCR is idling at 60 deg but still I'm a bit worried about this CRS326. Area is also a bit constrained. I'm not sure if I should be worried.

spec say
Tested ambient temperature -40°C .. +60°C

i think temperatures are rather high in comparison with other devices, in this moment i have 60°C with almost 10°C ambient temperature, switching 150mbps of traffic, extrapolating that to 60°C tested maximum temperature we can expect 110°C??? maybe that is the maximum temperature in the chipset specs

taking in count declared power consumption, of 24watt is pretty the same as CCR1009-7G-1C-PC who is passive but with a beefy heat-pipe heat-sink

lapsio what are your ambient temperatures?

In room probably around 26-ish or something. It's jsut normal room and it's summer so... Worse case is temperature inside this desk shelf which i'd say is something around 32-36? maybe. I'm not sure but it feels similar to temperature in workstation chassis where fan controllers probes say 36 deg so I think that would be accurate. There are those 2 switches, NUC with Celeron and Thomson ISP router on this shelf. Latter two are behind switches, you can spot NUC on photo in corner, left up from CRS326. HDMI and USB cables lead to it. Photo of shelf from before I put switches here:

There's cutout for cables and it's pretty much the only unsealed area of shelf. Other than that it's rather closed chamber with only front intake. Of course I took those CD cases out so now there's nothing except those 4 devices here.
