RB532 on 6.10 fail

Tue Jul 10, 2018 10:20 am

Hi all,

Just testing ,my oldie 532 used now on only as ap. Started successfully upgrading v3.30 to 4.1 then 5.x then 6.2. When upgrading to 6.10 the router stopped booting. Just one beep then... nothing...

Tried to hard reset, enter in console mode with null modem (get just black screen) no success. Any ideas ???

You really don't want to run 6.x on a 532. Very poor performance. There is a reason why MT's software download page now only lists 5.26 as the last officially-supported version on this hardware.

Not (necessarily) related to what happened in your particular case, but if you end up Netinstalling to resurrect the router from its current state, I would go with 5.26 and then just leave it there.

If it is beeping, then the board itself (hardware) is alive, as is RouterBOOT (bootloader). To use Netinstall on a 532, you really need to get the serial console working. If you tried a cable and got nothing, then you either have the wrong cable, or are using the wrong settings. Try a straight-through serial cable instead of null-modem. If that doesn't work then make 100% sure that you are matching the BPS rate of the Routerboard (RouterBOOT defaults to 115200) and that you configure for the standard Data/Parity/Stop of 8/None/1. If nothing works, then verify that your computer's serial port ACTUALLY works by hooking it up to something else.

Both serial cable adapters end in male. To use a computers serial port (tested both desktop & laptop) i use a converter (female to female). Cables tested so far are straight and null modem (using the same adaptor), still no success.

When connected with serial, shall i get a starting beep or not ?

Having a serial cable plugged into the 532 should have no effect on the boot process. You will still hear a beep. The only reason why you wouldn't hear a beep is if you interrupted the boot process by pressing a key. If you plug a serial cable in and suddenly it doesn't beep when you power it on, that means the bootloader saw something get transmitted across the serial cable, which it interpreted as a keystroke, so it halted the boot process and is now waiting for further input.

Can you try to hook your desktop or laptop serial cable up to a device OTHER than the 532 that has a serial port so that you know your computer set-up is actually working??

try netinstall with a switch between your PC and the routerboard

Please read the whole thread first. He can't even get the serial console to work so that he can reconfigure RouterBOOT to boot from network. It will be impossible for him to Netinstall until he figures out what is wrong on his end with his serial cable setup.

Holding down "reset" button on the 532 does not engage netboot mode like it does on newer RouterBOARDs.
