100Mb LAN - what's the point?

Wed Sep 12, 2018 1:32 pm

Hi. I am wondering what's the point in using 100Mb ports in devices today? Is it really that much cheaper? There are so many nice devices from Mikrotik but seeing 100Mb port on them makes them useless, like new devices from 60ad series.

Hi,

I have 1 Gbps internet connection for a few years, and I really do not need equipment that has a 100 Mbps connection than when I plug in IP camera, for example. But think that not everywhere in the world where Mikrotik sells routers the people is so lucky.
A few years ago I was in the UK to set up a network for a software company and initially could not connect to the internet except with an ADSL connection. It was only after 6 months that they were able to get a fiber optic connection. And the vast majority of users had ADSL connection in UK. I do not know what the situation is right now ...

So ...

In our country we have decent share of households with some kind of fibre connection. But most ISPs have subscription plans where price skyrockets when speed exceeds 50-100Mbps, so vast majority of residential connections are below 100Mbps.

I personally don't have 100M+ internet in any location I administer, but everywhere I currently have 1G switch/router ports. Why when IP camera needs only 30Mb/s max? Because it is much easier. I simply know that I have 16ports. All 1Gb. Having few 100M and few 1Gb would result in thinking "which user needs only 100Mb because he doesn't use the NAS on network...and be assured that he WILL need it sometime" etc..

I have been in this scenario few times- I was tidying some connections and now I had few 1Gb ports, few 100Mb ports and now what? I plugged all slower devices(VoIP, camera..) in 100Mb ports and the rest was computers. And now I had to be "jury, judge and executioner" of who gets only 100Mb and who 1Gb

Cost of 100mbit chips is also significantly cheaper. I wouldnt want gigabit on some of the real small cheap stuff, cos it would probably double the price. I think Mikrotik do a good job of determining whats worth the gigabit cost and whats not. Products that are capable of higher than 100mbit but only have 100mbit ports, if your actually pushing that much data through continuously then its probably worth the look into the bigger units anyway for better reliability.

There is equipment that only supports 10/100 Mbit/s, from an economic point of view it does not make sense to spend money on high-performance equipment capable of handling 1 Gbit/s. When the maximum bandwidth of network traffic will be limited to only 100 Mbit/s.

OP has a point. New 60Ghz "Lite" model can do 60Ghz connection so up to Gbit over the air in full duplex and is specced with a 10/100 port. Mental!

This is a CPE unit for connecting to an access point. If the AP has a gigabit connection and there are 8 CPEs connected, nobody can get more than 125Mbit anyway (if all are active). So for this situation, a low cost CPE was introduced.

The 100Mbit chip does get the price down a lot.

And USB also get the price up a lot, right, normis?

However if there were only 4 CPE's connected and the other 3 were dormant at that point you are dramatically under what we know is possible to achieve. At least it is a "Lite" model meaning that in time if the need arises you can lose that and increase the performance (and price).

HAHHAHAHAH, joke of the day.

Thanx for your explanation. But next time please think that if the radio is more than 100M in this case customer want this speed also on ethernet...

The 100Mb port in Lite60 devices might make sense if the AP allowed much more than 8 stations to connect. It's a very rare situation where everyone uses their full bandwidth at the same time. Not even fiber networks are made like this, GPON is 2.5Gbps split between 128 customers which gives average ~20Mbps but much higher "up to" service speeds are commonly sold, and even cheap CPEs have gigabit ports.
Any chance the 8 station limit would be lifted soon? I imagine this needs some polling/TDMA protocol, as the AP sector antenna beamforming needs to be set up properly for each station during its assigned time slot. If all stations from many directions can transmit at any random time like in plain old 802.11, the AP would need a wide sector beam (low gain, short range) to receive them all.
