CRS309-1g-8S+IN mixed reaction

Thu Jan 31, 2019 5:09 pm

Hardware looks great! I've been waiting for this hardware, very exciting.

but.... I really need to see MPLS LSR in hardware. The chipset supports this, but the CPU just can't handle this in software at any usable speed.

I would be using this with OSPF for transit and loopbacks, and the CPU is just fine for that, then MPLS/VPLS on top of that with these units in an LSR mode. Even better would be hardware LER so I could deliver 1-10G to customers right off the SFP+ ports...

The 317 works great as a swap-only P/LSR. Aside from a couple of 'minor' issues (can't seem to get away from implicit nulls on auto-bandwidth TE tunnels, which is bad if the penultimate router is swap-only in hardware with an insufficient CPU; and TTL-expired messages don't seem to be sent for packets expired in hardware, resulting in traceroute gaps), they have been awesome.

I was told the 309 would be the same. Are you suggesting that isn't the case?

How about the coming 326-24S+-2Q+?

PE/LER push/pop in hardware... I wish.

PE/LER in hardware would be *fantastic*

I've heard from a reliable source that the 309 doesn't have LSR mode enabled in the software (yet?)

Indeed it would, I'd be tempted to forklift my whole transport network for hardware push/pop.

We've already been swapping out 1072s for 317s as P routers at larger sites, but holding out for the 309 before doing smaller sites. I guess we will keep holding out for now.

Thanks,

I really hope we get some info on these and whatever is coming to replace the CCR. I'm not buying anymore TILE systems. The 450Gx4 and RB4011 are really awesome, but we still need something that will handle 10G and there's no non-TILE system that can right now.

CSR with hardware MPLS would completely alleviate by need for a CCR replacement on infrastructure.
