Hello,

to be honest i was expected from a device with "MQS (mobile quick setup)" size to be equipped with 4G LTE interface as well.
If not for this time at least for next time ?

Best Regards,

Daniel

Real Mikrotik,

Ethernet over 1,5km?
The big cost of fiber optic access is not the fiber and fiber hardware. Civil engineering is the most expensive, so why copper laying on the ground?

They found that customers do not buy new hardware devices without the needed working software ...

Silence around 802.11ax is deafening... and disappointing.
I guess in the end we will be happy if 160MHz channels are actually fixed and working on RB4011 year after it launched... wave2 is already lost cause... 802.11ax not even planned :(

1- Are 1-MikroTik 802.11ax Plans in 2019?
2- When will software support be provided to take full advantage of the features of existing 802.11ac wave2 products?
3- Is there a prospective study of MikroTik for the current Flagship Routers? When's Varise?
4- Why doesn't the Indoor Point cover the need for an Access Point with external high gain antennas? (cAP ac needs External antenna model.)

- mUPS pro: 24V/48V battery support, 24V/48V PoE out support,

Would be nice if it could send notifications, since after they removed the voltage sensor on the crs326 switches, we don't get notifications from the original mUps.

i have around 300 x CRS326/CRS226 switches in my network, and while the CRS226 can show voltage input (and therefore can alert me of running on mUPS with a script), the CRS326 can't, so I have no way of knowing if the device is running on mUPS, so it would be great if the mUPS pro could send out notifications

Sincerely

Carsten

- CRS326-24S+2Q+: 24x SFP+, 2x QSFP+, Q3/2019

So this switch uses the biggest chipset from Marvell's
Prestera DX series, i.e.: 98DX83XX Ethernet Switch Family

What I would like to have from MikroTik is a current switch with more ports: 48x 10GbE, 6x 100GbE, dual Power supplies
Therefore the Maxwell Prestera EX chipset (98EX54xx) could be used.

About "GPEN": do Mikrotik has plans for OAM like 802.1ag or ITU-T Y.1731?

OAM would also be useful if you once build a PWR-Line with Ethernet (instead of USB) connectivity to manage powerline modem.
OAM-Winbox would also be great ;-)

I wished Mikrotik had jumped the G.hn bandwagon for power-line as well as long-reach ethernet. So already installed wires (power-grid, POTS, coax, Cat5, fiber) could be (re-)used with the same protocol.

This GPEN thing has been born and dead already, so MT is at least few years late. We’ve been making such stuff out of MT switches since 2010 but now all devices are collected and clients converted to GPON access. It’s way cheaper, more reliable and faster. So you should probably have focused more to GPON solutions: 19” rackmounted 4-16 port OLT, 2-4 port industrial outdoor OLT, various integrated ONT options. I don’t think MT is incapable of making this stuff.

It seems like Mikrotik is expanding into new technologies lately (LTE,Powerline,GPEN,...). Which would be great, but it feels like it's at the expense of "traditional products" like WISP wireless.
Yes, we got 60GHz stuff that's really great, but just look at the state of the WIFI on RB4011... or even simple thing like OpenVPN UDP support - the thread about it is 11 years old!
One good thing is that NV2 on ARM seems to be (hopefully) fixed, but how long that took... in many cases new products are sold and can't even work according to the specification for years until they are fixed.
I really hope they did some study and saw GPEN and Powerline will sell well and there is high demand for these technologies somewhere...

The GPEN injectors seem like it would work well with the reverse PoE switch that was announced. They're a tidy-looking demarc that hides the power jack and PoE out jack, with a nice flat front that you can brand / label.

There's a few spots where we have customers in small apartment buildings where the landlord doesn't want 10 antennas installed for the ten units, but doesn't have a power source for the building that isn't tied to a unit. So with these products, we can install a single radio on the roof, install the reverse PoE switch on the wall or in a secure location and then install a GPEN Injector in each apartment to all power the radio. If there's another building on the property, we can do the same setup, but instead of a radio on the roof, we can run fiber to the first building.

Though while a lot of these products are useful and exciting, I was really hoping to see another flagship router to replace the BGP-challenged CCR1072. At this point I'd take a 1U server with an Intel Xeon with a bunch of SFP+ cards jammed in the front and a Mikrotik logo stuck on.

They'd have to be running something like Proxmox on the hardware with CHR running on top to make it work. That would actually be kind of neat if it's integrated cleanly, you could have multiple instances of RouterOS on the same hardware with some rudimentary backup / failover. Mikrotik would sell you one box and be able to make more money selling you additional CHR licenses.

I still prefer a structured copper inhouse installation over fiber in many places.
1. We struggle a lot with sfp problems. Some get hot, autonegotiation is often not successful, ...
2. Some watts extra
3. No poe possible
4. Copper is much easier to handle esp. if a cable is broken

Thanks!
Congratulations! You have unlocked additional secret Fast Ethernet port on your device!
This port looks like mikroUSB, but only works over electrical power lines.
To utilize it you need this new "PWR Line" product, that not only acts like power adapter to the device, but forwards data to Electrical network.
You need at least one another PWR device on opposite side, same as above or use https://mikrotik.com/product/pwr_line_ap

Thanks for your answer! That part (i.e. how powerline adapters work) and the fact that we need a powerline device on the "other side" looks straightforward. What I don't really get is the following:
  • Does this update simply turn the mAP into a powerline-compatible device? (i.e. that piece of hardware has been hidden on the board all along :) )
  • If so, and it works over the microUSB port, for me it means that you plug your random USB charger into the mAP and the mAP will be capable of communicating with another powerline device on the same electrical cable right? Like voilá, you have a powerline adapter now. This seems a bit strange to me, as it would mean the mAP "couple the data" onto the power cord through any random USB power supply you have (or - more plausibly - over a specific, strictly defined, Mikrotik-made type of USB power supply).

Thanks!

The powerline adapter is basically entirely new powerline modem, with it's own CPU. There is no magic "microusb" that can forward powerline signal to the mAP, that's impossible. The external box would probably appear as a USB device when plugged into phone or PC (existence of drivers to actually use it is a different matter).

It's just a USB device just like an ethernet to a USB or wifi dongel. It has no CPU in normal words meaning.

But the sense of this device escapes me.

Thanks for the answers, although I'm not enirely certain if I'm not getting something right or the question is not well phrased enough so let's get more visual:

So compared to a standard powerline setup such as this one here:

[PC1](RJ45) ---<UTP>--- (RJ45)[POWERLINE DEVICE 1](230V socket) ===<mains wall cable>=== (230V socket)[POWERLINE DEVICE 2](RJ45) ---<UTP>--- (RJ45)[PC2]

Will you get this:

[PC1](RJ45) ---<UTP>--- (RJ45)[mAP](microUSB)---[SPECIAL POWER SUPPLY?](230V socket) ===<mains wall cable>=== (230V socket)[POWERLINE DEVICE 2](RJ45) ---<UTP>--- (RJ45)[PC2]

?

Re: MUM Europe 2019: new hardware

better scenario:

[Router](RJ45) ---<UTP>--- (RJ45)[POWERLINE DEVICE]---(230V socket) ===<mains wall cable>=== (230V socket)[new mikrotik POWERLINE DEVICE](microUSB) ---[mAP lite] ~~~ <WiFi> ~~~ [PC]

good to get an AP running in a place without ethernet cable connection.

@raystream

I guess the "new mikrotik powerline device" you mention means a simple USB charger, with the specialty that it is capable of letting through already-converted Powerline Communications (PLC) protocol data between its USB port and the 230V plug. This is the only way I could imagine this new feature which, by the way would only make sense if you already own a mAP and this additional "special" power supply (microUSB-230V) is cheaper than purchasing a standard PL7411-2nD (which already has WiFi and an Ethernet port on board).

Ultimately I believe both the mAP and the PL7411-2nD are essentially the same in terms of:
  • They share the same main board including the QCA9531/9533 SoC
  • They both have the AR7420 Powerline controller chip (which was not on the mAP's specs page) that does the actual Powerline protocol (PLC) conversion i.e. it converts and modulates 802.3 Ethernet data onto the 5V power pin
  • A 230V to 5V power supply that is compatible with the powerline protocol i.e. it lets data (already powerline protocol) through between its 5V and 230V side

- and the difference is that you can have these in one single box as a PL7411-2nD or separately as a mAP + this "special"/"supprted" USB power supply. This is my understanding based on the current info and datasheets available.

you are taking the sentence literally without taking in count context

is a common designation use the term tri band router referring to a 2 x 5ghz + 1 2.4 ghz router

Perfect thank you, just checking and exactly what we want, well once we see the price.

Anybody able to help me on the Dual band LHG XL if it is 60GHz and 5,8 as there we do not need a 2,4 and 5,8?

Just because it's common doesn't mean that it isn't idiocy. Shame that Mikrotik perpetuate this. It's like calling gigabit ethernet 2Gbps because it's 1Gbps in each direction.

The MUM presentation included a clear example. Highrise buildings, multi apartment buildings, with many floors and sections, where very long ethernet cables might be a problem.

Home user connects WiFI AP to GPEN11, which then outputs PoE power over ethernet, ethernet is extended with GPER units up to 1.5km long, then on the roof you have a outdoor switch, which takes power from all the apartments (from GPEN11), then there is some kind of link to the next building, 60GHz for example.

Re: MUM Europe 2019: new hardware

by marekm
Any estimate when the outdoor switches with many PoE inputs (CRS318-16Fi-2S) would become available from distributors?
Does the F stand for Fast ethernet (not gigabit)? Is the PoE-out port also not gigabit? (so gigabit uplink to LHG60 would need a copper SFP and use PoE-out port only for power)

As for highrise buildings, I would be worried about lightning strikes inducing dangerous voltages in very long vertical cables so fiber is still preferable. But here we have many single family houses "glued together in a row" with no common part to take power from, and it's not very reliable to depend on power from a single customer - it's a bit like highrise building but horizontal :)

I just stumbled across the GPEN11, interesting product. Does it out POE power on both ports? The cabling diagram seems to indicate yes but the documentation doesn't say so I was just looking for some clarification.

We had approx a hundred such setups with 2-18 clients per building. It works quite well and is easy to deploy on roofs. But they’re indeed subject to lightning. We had plenty with fried ports and whole switches together with client routers. Long open cable runs either vertical or horizontal on buildings effectively catch lightning. And installing surge arrestors and quality grounding brings you to the price of fiber, so it really depends on how much this new invention of MT will cost..

that'll be my question too. it would be so nice to have poe out on both ports, so you could just have the indoor CPE connected by a single ethernet and hide the wall wart.
also, it would bring more straightforward troubleshooting:
- if power is connected, both devices (outdoor and indoor) are powered

in some cases the source of issues is really just "user error"

grounding problem is a building problem not a network problem, that kind of scenario favors optical fiber, but you still will have issues with reset of routers, burned routers and or power supplies

@Mikrotik is there more info about the GPEN21? i.e is it a media converter with POE or what? Does it have ROS access? Or is it just "dumb".

Any news about CRS318 series? Need to decide - wait or roll my own reverse-PoE switches (I'd like to avoid unnecessary work if the product will be available soon).

Would a potential continuation of the CCR1036 likely use ARM64 as opposed to TILE64? I suppose if it did, it would not be a CCR1036 as it would not have a 36-core ARM64. Any thoughts on the attached (theoretical obviously)? I was trying to find a post put out not too long ago about Mikrotik asking its customer base for feedback about what they would like to see in new hardware releases.
